1.3. Just got killed about 8 turns in

I moved a tile or two, founded my kingdom, built a farm and a hut, then along comes a creature with a combat rating of 6.  I haven't even been able to train a single unit yet.  The creature walks all over me, game over.

Not to sound like a whining baby, but what the hell could I have done to prevent that?

Oh, and while I was asking for help in the built-in IRC client I got yet another DX crash.  Of course.

That's odd. I haven't played in a while, but didn't they change it so that your sov starts with a minor spell or 2 for this sort of thing?

Oh really?  I didn't realise that; not having researched any spells I didn't bother to check.  Still, the resurgent DX error (that has been reported by various forumites since at least as far back as February) means I'll probably wait for the next stable patch yet again before trying.

See you in a few months!

This happens to me often.  I try to explore with my Sov, and before I can train a city defender, a creature appears and destroyed my capital.

When you create your first city build peasants first.

what maniakos says, I personally think founding a village should be tough but thats me

Is it even possible to have peasants strong enough to defeat that stack trained by turn 8?

If it's not, then it's not "hard". It's flawed. Sending what amounts to an impossible to defeat stack at the player that early doesn't work.

I agree, the base level of the game has got so hard, it is flawed in a lot of games.

Best regards,
Steven.

Don't forget that it works both ways,

On a small map with many opponents you can grab their 2nd cities just by marching in.

Yeah, because that would be fun, wouldn't it?  I'm not going to cheese my way through the game taking advantage of stupid AI.  I already stopped playing at 1.1 when it became apparent that the AI would cheerfully hand you the game by walking his undefended sov into your territory.  1.2 came with the much-vaunted "AI patch" so I eagerly returned to the game, only to be thwarted by the DX crashes.  With 1.3 I thought I'd try again, but now not only do I get steamrolled in fewer than 10 turns, but I still get DX crashes.

I may very well be out of patience with Elemental.

Well bugger I.  Out of sheer boredom I loaded my save and, sure enough, I had Arcane Arrow which allowed me to one-shot the attacker.  I then played another 20-or-so turns without a crash!  I'm in the midst of starting to commence thinking about being cautiously optimistic now...

Please don't let me down, Stardock.

Actully this sounds promising. But then I like a tough game even if I get wiped in the first few turns.

Well so far it's all systems go!  I haven't had another DX crash yet after playing for a few turns and using the built-in IRC client.  The game seems to be running smoothly for now.

For all the talk of the game being fundamentally broken due to this or that issue, up until 1.1 I was sincerely enjoying it.  I love the art style and I don't mind that magic isn't as centre-stage as we were led to believe.  I really want 64-bit mode though, and I'll feel quite short-changed if it never comes to WoM.  Don't get me wrong, I think there's plenty wrong with the game, but nothing that makes it as unplayable as many seem to think.

ALL I hope for, now, is that the enemy sovs don't still hand you the game by being ridiculously stupid.  That's all that stopped me playing at 1.1.  I guess it won't take me long to find out.
