Bad News for Netflix Subscribers

Many of us got bad news from Netflix yesterday:

“The company's new $7.99-per-month plan, offered at a new page on the Netflix site, allows users to have one DVD out a time on an unlimited basis. According to a Netflix salesperson who spoke to CNET today, those who want to include Blu-ray discs in the new plan will need to pay $9.99 per month. Internet streaming of video content is not included. If customers want two DVDs out at a time, they will need to pay $11.99 per month.

Netflix also announced today that those who want both DVD rentals and unlimited streaming will need to start paying more. Instead of paying the current $9.99-per-month fee for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVD rentals, customers will need to pay $15.98 a month for a single DVD out a time, paying almost 60 percent more for the same service. The company said the fee includes $7.99 for unlimited streaming and $7.99 for its new bare-bones plan. Those who want two DVDs out a time will need to pay $19.98 per month.” - CNET

So….

“There are no more hybrid plans that offer access to DVDs and Internet streaming. There's a separate plan now for DVDs and separate plan for streaming. Each costs $7.99 per month (for 1 disc at a time). To access discs and Web video you have to pay for both plans and that means $15.98 a month.” – ibid

Unfortunately folks,  if you rent a flick on Amazon or YouTube or Redtop, it’ll cost $2.99 – 3.99 per.  So… using my trusty slide rule I figure at 5 – 6 movies per month, I’ll be paying more than at Netflix.

So… I figure to be at Netflix for a bit longer. Maybe they’ll even increase the quality and number of Action movies. Who knows?

I have the streaming-only plan.  I do expect a price increase on that soon.

No, time to junk them.  I hate bait and switch, and that is what it looks like Netflix is doing.

And I thought about subscribing at one time. No thanks. There's still the library at $1.50 for three days on certain DVD's and others you get a whole week for the same price. Or I could just buy them when they hit the stores. That's a one time fee for a lifetime. lol

I think they're trying to get more than one account per dwelling. They're 'lumping' rather than 'splitting' and making $ doing so.

Until DVD formats and readers change... Don't forget planned obsolescence, Uvah. The idea is to make you buy the same thing several times.

I had the 3 out + streaming for I think it was $19.99 but decided to drop them even though its cheaper that watching a movie from the cable company.

Oh I haven't forgotten that Doc because without it a lot of big wigs would lose a lot of money.

I can't believe it's taken then this long. Hell, even though the prices went up, it's still cheap as hell. Some of you are very bitter. Think about how much it used to cost to rent a movie from Blockbuster, or any other rental movie outlet. Netflix is still cheap! Not to mention the amount of bandwidth it requires to stream full length shows and movies. Do you have any idea how much that bandwidth costs?

Don't forget, if your service gets capped, you'll pay for it from both ends.

I have never used Netflixs, but then I do have lots of Dvd's.  Anyone want to rent one?  :O :-"

I'm sure Netflix is plenty profitable, but don't forget that their profit margins are slimming due to greedy movie studios asking for more and more money in their contracts each time renewal comes up. Deals have reached into the billions (*cough* Paramount *cough*)

Well my cost will go up $4. Considering I have the unlimited account I can and do (have kids) watch 100 different movies a month so the price is only 4 pennies a month for me.

Typical of a lot of internet services. I have to agree. Movies are cheaper at the store across the street for now.

The studios are hitting Netflix with higher prices (as mentioned above)  Obviously Netflix has to make that up somewhere.  You still get the opportunity to watch an incredible amount of movies per month for less than two trips to a theater.  What is there to complain about?  I turn around a disc every three days.  I get it on Monday, mail it back on Tuesday and have a new one by Thursday.  And streaming?  Please, that's the greatest thing ever.  Sure, I liked having both for $10.69 (all told with tax), but I'm not going to bitch about 5 more dollars.  Not for what I'm getting from them.  Cut out one of your uber-large frapamochachinolattes and quit whining.

Cable going up, internet service going up, movies going up. It's getting to a point where a guy can't afford to sit on his ass anymore.

I wonder where libraries will get their books and dvd's when everything is digitally distributed?... Will they let you checkout to your Kindle? I doubt it.

I'll be dropping my account down to streaming only (3 DVDs + Streaming now) on September 1st. The DVD part has really already run it's course. I feel like we stole the current set sitting on the entertainment center (i.e. table with the TV on it).

They'll get less money from me, but I wonder if it will be a net gain for them in the end without the DVD distribution.

Yours won't change, Jim... same as I.D.'s plan if I read his reply#1 correctly.

That paragraph is confusing.  This is how the plan actually works and will work with the changes.

In simple terms, if you had the $9.99 unlimited streaming and 1 DVD out at a time plan, it will now cost you $15.98.
