Am I supposed to design my own ships?

Hello all,

I'm a bit confused about ships and the ship designer. Sometimes I research techs and it doesn't seem to make any difference to the ships I have at that time!

Am I supposed to design a new ship myself every time I research something?

Also, special techs like the Terran warp bubbles...I forget the proper name!....in another thread I read that you should just put them on one of your ships in a fleet and not all of them, but I don't really understand that. Doesn't the tech just automatically upgrade all the ships you have once you've researched it?

Thanks!

The autodesigner, frankly, is not very good. It's probably best if you design your own ships.

I'm not quite sure if I understand this question, but multiple fleet modules in the same fleet, IIRC, do not stack, so having multiple ships with them in the same fleet is redundant.

It's been a while but I believe you have to upgrade your ships as they don't automatically upgrade.  Personally, designing the ships is the real fun part for me.  :)

Thanks for your replies! I'll have a go at it and see how I get on.

Is it possible to edit an existing ship design instead of starting from scratch? I hate having to reconstruct a ship from scratch every time i want to switch out obsolete thrusters with newer ones.

Yes: uncheck the "remove existing ship components" (or something like that) option in Game Options. I honestly don't know why having that checked is the default setting.

Thanks, that's going to save me a lot of time.

Ugh this is a big thing for me, I received GalCiv ultimate edition yesterday and I have been enjoying the game, EXCEPT I hate having to spend so much time making a new ship as soon as I research something new, it puts me off the game. I see it as a chore. I just thought you would have pre made units like Civilization. I read in a review that ToA can automatically make ships for you but I don't know how.

The rest of the game is great, I just hate ship building even though most people seem to love it.

Auto Design Ships for Player, it's an option.  If you design any ships you can use those as your templates (or use pre-made designs) by customising your race's ship style or making a new one for it to use.  Oddly enough, you need to set your race as an opponent to do this in the game.

The Focus button in the Shipyard can be used when you have ADSfP turned on, it lets you decide what weapons and defences should be on your ships.
