About to buy Object Desktop which has DesktopX -Question.

Hi Folks!

I am about to take the plunge.  I am having a bit of confusion about Object Desktop, which comes with a slew of apps.  One being DesktopX, which is one of the apps I thought I had to buy separately at 1st.  Does this work on Windows 7 x64?  I looked at the system requirements for Object Desktop and it lists DesktopX under XP (only).  What gives?

I hope I don't have to buy more by the way of UPDATES, to get all these nice apps to all work on Windows 7 x64?

Does anyone have any advice for me, before I buy anything.  Anyone have consistant problems with (WindowsBlinds, DesktopX, and any of the ones listed in the Obkect Desktop Suite)?  Just want to learn and maybe avoid some of the usual bumps in the road.           :zoomba:

Thanks,

Your best bet in asking about Desktop X and 7x64 is to pm Redneck Dude.

Doc, I'm running out of checks, do you take a credit card?  ;)

BarJabba....yes, DesktopX works as well on 64 bit Win 7 as it does on anything else.

My advice? Stay with the latest release version, stay away from betas.

DesktopX 3.5 is the most recent stable release, IMHO.

I will be more than happy to answer any question you may have about DX. If it is a scripting question, I would go to sViz, or David Roman (romanDa).

Everything in Object Desktop works fine on 7 64 bit except Theme Manager which hasn't worked completely on anything since XP. It does, or used to, work great on XP.

ObjectDesktop is a one-year subscription. You get all updates for all the programs free during that year. If you choose not to renew, they will still function; you will just not get free updates. Be sure to archive (and copy and store) your programs as Stardock no longer will give you an old version that you have paid for.

avoid some of the usual bumps in the road

Some usual bumps are:

If you have the trial version of Windowblinds installed, it needs to be uninstalled before installing the pay version.  Apply the default Microsoft scheme from within the WB Config window, then uninstall the trial.  Reboot.

Impulse is required to install the pay software.  Download it and install it, it is your software manager.  Do not panic at the advertising it contains or the default "Load at startup" configurations, you can reasonably disable / avoid those via some provided configuration options.

The email you use to purchase the software needs to be the same as the email you're going to use to register the software within Impulse.

Paypal seems to cause a delay after purchase, and can contribute to the email issue.  Best to avoid using it for the purchase if you can.

That's what comes to mind right now.  Happy customizing :)

Oh Wow RedNeckDude.  Thaks, just what I needed to know.  I noted the references to help ones I get all squared away with installation.

I was very intersted in DX because of the scripting in VB, which I have done in my career.  I am still concerned though, about Stardock development furture. I just wonder if this is a bad buy at this time.  Meaning, if they are going "retire" DX or no longer put anymore releases out on it.  They do have the 1 year free updates and I wouldn't be able to update with if turns put a full version (vs 3 to vs 4) release.  I just had a question I emailed and they haven't responding for 1 1/2 weeks.  So it sends some red flags for me.  I have been burned on support on a number of softwares that I have bought.  Tired of it is all.

Anyway, thanks a bunch!

Hey willistuder,

Sad that you cannot have your version available for redownload. I have my Forum Software and they have my previous versions available for me.  Bt, really it is a good thing to back up all your versions, which I have done for many years.  YOu should see all the retro, ancient softwares I have still.  I tend not tp through away anything.  My generation of programmers try to keep everything.

I am so glad the community is giving some things to watch out for.  Theme Manager is one to wacthout for.

That's go advice.  I do not have the trial version.  I tried the Windows Blind last year.  I decided to wait until I get my new build & OS.

That has been a nagging issue in my mind.  I dispise adware, when I have bought thier software.  Like the Crysis 2 game I bought last month, having GamSpy installed triggered my A/V.  I trusted it for now. I really am not going to do MultiPlayer, so I may nix it.  I hope you are correct about nixing this adware.  If I want something, I will seek for it. I get enuf adverts in my life.  The brain is already full of mush.

Oh Man, really?  I use Paypal rather exclusively.  I will only get to use my RoboForm app I guess.  I will make sure of the HTTPS. I am a private and careful sort. Oh I have been had before, don't get me wrong.

Thanks for all the good advise DaveRI!   k5

I just use it as a software manager.  I load it up via a shortcut just like any other program, check for updates or whatever. close it.  Never see an ad, Impulse loaded or not.  When you install it, it does want to throw a little quacker down in the systray, I think that's the "Impulse Now" which can be disabled in the main window preferences.

Some people just install it and then panic, there's no need to. ;)
