I've started up a game on the dominions forum as I've been wanting to get back into this game.  I'm still a newb myself and the game will be an EA newbs game (no more than 4 or 5 games played).  It will also run CBM.  If anyone on here is interested, please join here:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?p=778670#post778670

From what I've read, I'm not sure if there was enough interest here for a newb game of 8 players, that's one reason I hosted it up there.

Anyways, hope to see some of you guys join.  Should be fun B)

Cool news MD!

A word of warning though for people with little MP experience.  Joining a lot of games sure sounds like fun, but realize that the time commitment actually can become significant as you progress through the first dozen turns or so.  Not necessarily putting in turns, but dealing with diplo and waiting for replies and such.

I would very much caution against being in more than 2 games at the same time until you feel really comfortable with the entire MP aspect.

Not trying to steer people away Doc, just trying to keep games from stalling in later turns as people realize they've taken on more than they want to handle.  I've seen it happen before, and if you read various MP threads you'll  see it cropping up now and again as well.

That is a good point.  Don't want people to bail out later in the game.

Although I will add that the idea with this game was for the people interested here to come join it.  Since no one here seemed to be hosting it, I decided to go ahead and do it.  I only posted it there as it didn't sound like there'd be enough for 8 people if I posted it here, and if all are newbs, judging from the replies here.

I generally say 3 games and dont start them at the same time. People dont realize that toward late game a turn can take one or two hours to properly turn in

Good game writeup MartialDoc. I love EA.

But I prefer not to do pbem. Let me know if that changes.

edit: Oh, CBm. Never mind.

I'm in (I hope)

Me..............

We are going to need to move on this soon before 20 people start up games.

This one is defiantly now vanilla,I looked into CBM and its far,far different game. Anybody used to CBm is far ahead of a noob to vanilla.

As soon as we get numbers on this game.ie...number of players a proper random map will be generated.

Shall we just go with EA and start stating nation prefs?

I'll take any nation

so player one is in.................

Next?

I've returned and I'm in for a match. My calendar is free until mid August, so there shouldn't be any interruptions on my end!

Yes, vanilla EA is fine....    how do we decide pretenders?   May I try ice giants, or hinnom?

Just post your nation, 1st come 1st serve.

I'll start the list, then when you add yourself, copy it and put yourself on the bottom.  When we get to whatever number Tophat wants he'll just say we're starting.

VANILLA EARLY AGE MAP TBD

1) Rasael  UNKNOWN

2) Tophat  WHATEVER

3) louist  Caelum

4) Elana  Niefelheim or Hinnom

5) Shadowtongue Ulm

Apologies if I missed you, I only took names from this page.  That appears to be 5, I'd say 6 is good enough, but 8 would be nice.  Waiting to go past 8 isnt worth it probably, and anyway, too many and the game can drag if there is a dropper in the mix ;)

For something different, I'll choose Caelum.

Ok, well no one has signed up, so I'll happily change the game to vanilla.  It doesn't really matter to me as I haven't played CBM anyways :P

Dont be too bothered. Games fill up slowly on Shrapnel. in some forums a Dom3 game is filled in 15 minutes with 8-15 players. But on Shrapnel it has slowed down.

*chuckle*

I think I may have mentioned that in the other thread... ;)

Not that Niefel wins you many friends either... hehe.

But, learning to thug out, or just go straight SCs is part of the game.  As is learning how to kill those huge bastards :)

*hint* You need mages... ;)

 Arcosephale.

Is this the same game as is hosted on Lamaserver or are there different games now? It is confusing me who is organising this. :S  (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?p=778670#post778670)

No CBS but the rest of the game stats are ? Strong Independents? Slow Research? I really like Cradle of Dominions map but I'm sure others are fine too.

Different game than the one over at shrapnel.  Tophat is responsible for this one.  Also, I don't think we're using Cradle of Dominions, Strong Indepedents, or Slow Research...

I am organizing that one (you'll notice I posted it on that site) while Shadowtongue seems to be organizing this one.  But there is no slow research in mine; not sure where you got that from.

And I'll sit out of this one, shadow.  Thanks for asking, though.

How did i get wacked by turn 3?

It happened because i attacked a neutral province adjacient to my home castle.  I won, but took many losses (support troops, not leaders).  The very same turn Hinnom rolled in and attacked the province, now defended by my weakened forces (with no PD to help).  My pretender and HP were killed.  Almost everyone in the game (except the player who benefited from this) agreed that the initial  set up - especially with the water player dropping out at the last minute (and this giant player being on that coast!) - was unbalanced.  They also agreed that it was 'unlucky.'  My position wasn't actually totally eliminated for several more turns.  But losing 70% of your position, by turn 3, and not being able to even generate points to get the pretender 'resurrected,' definatly made any continued play, merely an exercise in pleasing the other players by 'putting up a fight' with almost no choices... just like a mosquitoe dodging a sledgehammer.  I had promised not to drop out, if losing, and to put up a fight.  So i kept my word and put up a fight.  Since i had almost no income, and few effective troops / leaders of any sort - I resorted to using words to continue fighting off that player  (Ala Diplomacy) - and trying to provide resources to othe rplayers in such a way as to bolster them.  but I never actually had opportunity to even attempt to develop a position, and do anything.  ALL the items I had read on line indicated that your home castle and adjacant provinces were 'safe' for 5 turns or so.  I actually feel i did not play Dom3 MP, but instead a 'mod' of diplmacy - a game of words, and misdirection.  It is what it is.

I actually had missed this earlier.

After reading this and noticing some of your comments from the other dom3 posting, I realized that you probably went into playing the game completely blind.  It's best to actually play the single player and mess around with things first to figure out some of the details.  It's very important to figure out how to take neutral provinces with minimal losses and that can all be figured out in the single player.  You can also mess around with your pretender design in single player as well and figure out the design that will work best for you.

But to get hit so early in the game still means that you guys must have started right next to each other.  Must have been a small map (or small for the amount of players) and was definitely unlucky for you.

i can play with Sauromatia - and for sure i qualified as noob - first MP ever

OK,  please drop hinnom... ice giants instead, please?  Or does the moderator have a suggestion for a nation?

*sigh*  ;)

VANILLA EARLY AGE MAP TBD (ALL SETTINGS STANDARD, BUT PLEASE ALLOW RENAMING)

1) Rasael  Arco

2) Tophat  WHATEVER

3) louist  Caelum

4) Elana  Niefelheim

5) Shadowtongue Ulm

6) EmersonPF Abysia

7) bpalczewski Sauromatia

That's 7!

I wasn't actually planning on running this game, Tophat is the man who got the ball rolling.  I just jumped in with the list, because otherwise things were too scattered.  If you want me to admin the game I can do that, but it's still TopHats baby as far as I'm concerned.  Though Tophat hasn't been around of late.

Anyway, my vote is to just get this sucka started as soon as Tophat puts in his national choice.  Wonderloss can generate a random map for us with ~15 provs per player, and can set the start locations.  Or we can use a premade map with ~105 provinces.  Map isn't *that* critical so long as someone has checked that the starting locations are spread evenly.  Also, so far no water nations, so we should take that into consideration on the map, we don't need much/any water on it.  Helps with balance a bit since some land nations (Niefel for example) would have a relative advantage going in the water over the others so far chosen.  Parganos (which I think is a standard map) is a good size potentially.
