Derek, will FE have SP style Multiplayer? As Shogun 2 has shown, people will play long times if the MP is interesting and rewarding.

And people who want to play alongside their friends simply don't have the requirements of speed and quick wrap-up that most competitive MPers do.

"If you build it, they will come."  That saying is true a very high proportion of the time, for practically everything worthwhile to people.  Don't put SP-style multiplayer (when the goal is fun and co-operating to defeat a tough AI team) in the same "too-hard" basket as competitive Elemental (whose concept simply doesn't work).  And so far, SP FE looks to be avoiding many of the mistakes of WoM, so even more reason to consider an SP-style multiplayer mode.

Best regards,
Steven.

Honestly my friends and I tried playing multiplayer once thinking it would be like playing single player but we quickly realized the multiplayer was too limiting with smaller maps, no customizable kingdoms and the intent was to play coop against the AI.  After that neither of us really play Elemental much anymore.  I load it up every once in a while but I really wanted a game to play with my friends.  I enjoy the single player but the lack of a good coop system is a big turn off.

i agree as well.  i love playing large games of AOW: shadow magic with a friend of mine.  i just wish the AI was better.  its fun to play a long game over the course of a month.

Totally agree, personally as stated before I prefer to Play By EMail (PBEM). Probably once the regular multiplayer has been improved adding a PBEM system wouldn't be that tough.

There should 2 MP modes:

Ranked match with competitive rules and an emphasis on balance and quick games

Player match with the full SP experience offered.

There is no demand for the former at this time.

I agree entirely. The multi-player mode should have the same functions and features as the SP version of the game. Let the community/modders out there determine what is balanced for MP games. The single player experience in multi-player form with friends and/or strangers is all that I ask for.. at this time.

There might not be, and it should be lower priority, but if FE does well, I think some demand might come.  I'll agree with the crowd that it's more important to have the full experience avaliable then a balanced one.

I don't care about ranked matches or the balance that would require ranked matches to be a worthwhile distraction.

Agreed

They should just take out MP altogether. Nobody really plays it and it's just a waste of resources to include it in these types of games. Put those resources and time spent programming MP into the single player AI you promised you wouldn't take away from time on the single player game for multiplayer anyways Brad. So just can MP and let's get on with a great single player experience. ;)

Shogun 2 wants to have words with you, ross. You do it correctly and there will be interest. You completely screw it up the way MP in WoM is (and don't even enable it for a month after release), and you won't.

nobody plays it because it really doesn't exist.  i would guarantee alot of people would play it if it were done well, and nearly everyone wants to play the full SP experience.  i am just not sure if the dev's realize that these kinds of games are primarily played by friends, not strangers.  if you have friends to play with they will play a game over the course of several sessions.  me personally i like to have me and my friends gang up on several tough AI's, and see if we can work together to fight them off.

I don't play competitively, yes. But a good LAN co-op with my brother or a friend is pretty awesome. It just NEEDS to be the full single-player game.

Bah... a lot of people say they'll play MP, but in reality, very few will.  If ind it amusing, and irritating if truth be told, that the first question asked any time any game is announced is, "Does it have multiplayer?".  If it doesn't, people blast it.  If it does, the next question I always see is "I need people to play with.  Please play with me..."  Bah, multiplayer games... I hate 'em.

I gave you karma because you are right and so is Femmefatal. MP players are so few and far between except on rts or fps games. Turn based games just do not begat many multiplayer players. Every game I've ever seen like Age of Wonders and Civilization there are just a handful of the same old MPs on the servers and on the forums. They shout very loud but really adding multiplayer to turn based games is really just a waste of time and resources.

The last couple of sentences are highly ironic considering you're posting in this thread as two people.

Well, I baught Elemental to a friend so we could play multiplayer since I enjoyed the single player mode.  Just a few tweeks would make it workable even if not great.  Right now, it's more frustrating than anything else.  Maybe there isn't a lot of MP people out there, but the 'box' does say MP.  It should be supported and fix to be at least made workable in my opinion.

I thought Kael said that by focusing on single player they could introduce some crazy stuff and not have to worry about multiplayer issues regarding balance.

That sounds acceptable to me. I don't want single player watered down just so multiplayer is balanced.

However, it would be nice to have some form of multiplayer. Even if things are unbalanced it could still be a lot of fun. That would be good for co-op style play

when you just want to play with friends for fun.

If it is for the sole purpose of who is the better player then it wouldn't work so well obviously.
