Rebels and Loyalists Speculation Thread

It has been stated that:

  • New Factions: Players decide whether to become Loyalists or Rebels, which unlocks a unique new tech tree granting them new technologies and ship variants.

So will the current vanilla factions still exist? Does deciding to become Loyalist or Rebel happen before the game (i.e when selecting what map, faction etc.) or will it be possible to start a game as a 'normal' faction and then decide to go rebel or loyalist afterwards?

How might these subfactions differ from each other? Will it be superficial or will they play like new races? Variations of existing ships sounds interesting. Could this be like this: Loyalist TEC get stronger Kodiaks and weaker LRMs and Rebel TEC get stronger SC and weaker Hoshikoes? (for example) Could there also be variations on capital ships?

Or maybe subfactions could be done in a similar way to C&C Generals ZH and C&C3 KW. That is, each subfaction has a unique specialty (technology, weapon type or ship class). I could imagine Rebel Vasari getting much cheaper Phase nodes and a far stronger Antorak or Loyalist Advent becoming far more brutal with far stronger siege options. They call themselves the Unity afterall and seeing such a faction be disunited  sounds like it has interesting connotations.

Seeing how technology will advance in the Sins universe would also be fun to see. I wonder if the new weapon types introduced in Entrenchment (beams for TEC, psionic surges on Advent SB and disintegrators on Vasari SB) may become more common.

Vanilla factions will still exist - the choice comes once someone decides to research in one of the new rebel/loyalist tech trees.  The strategies will differ depending on which way a player goes, but at their core they'll still be TEC/Advent/Vasari racially speaking.

i am going to ask a dumb question but shouldnt the player always be considered loyal no matter which tech tree he chooses.

Indeed, tell us more!

Or at least, tell me more. I promise I won't leak the info to anyone else ;)

How is that vague and nebulous? He tells us exactly what it is.

I personally think that the Advent, (me being a big Advent player), Loyalists may have increased culture and increased in-culture buffs and shields or crystal production, (considering the Advent eat crystal quicker than an entire map can make it), or cheaper and/or faster research, (probably not faster considering they already have knowledge aggregation). The rebels may have better beam weapons, or strike craft, (ahh, the oh so shiny Advent strike craft). Maybe actual refineries, instead of 'Resource Focus' on their trade ports. They might have a passive ship speed increase research (how unheard of is that? Completely obscene if you ask me. Not.)

Hold on... Does this mean that one tech tree "route" cancels out or blocks the other? If so, this is absolutely fantastic and is something I've been thinking would be great for Sins. Thanks in advance if this is indeed the case.

Yeah, my understanding is that the two sides are mutually exclusive.

Depending on how this plays out... I have some really good ideas for the tech tree. :3

So, erm...wait...so basically there will still be only 3 factions then? Or will we get some new races?...That would be awesome...

No new races, just 2 new versions of each race.

Three factions with two subfactions each, for a total of 9 different paths for the player to take (or perhaps 6 if the benefits of the loyalists/rebels are not accompanied with sufficient weaknesses to make the original factions viable).

If you want completely new factions, best check out the modding community for that one. And you don't even need to wait for the expansion! ;)

Yeah...modding scares me, lol. I would like to create my own race, but the whole ship/structure/whatever creating seems like it would be impossible for me without help. xD (I wanna put myself in this game, lol)

But yeah, wish we could have a new race. T_T

*is afraid to ask around the modding board*

Well I meant you should download one of the many mods that add new factions, but really you shouldn't be afraid to ask the modding board. We are nice and helpful people, even if a lot of our work and conversations look like gibberish at first. :P It is certianly a lot of work, bit since I'm pretty sure the Devs won't be putting you in the game even if they were making entirely new races, its really your only option I'm afraid.  :S

GoaFan has a good point.  If online multiplayer PvP isn't of interest to you then exploring the numerous mods becomes an attractive possibility.  Ironically, it might even make for a better value than purchasing Rebellion since the mods are free.  There's even a good mod that adds new planet types (Sins Plus).
