Achievements in Rebellion

So, I noticed in another post that Impulse::Reactor supports achievements.  This will likely be applied to Rebellion, but I hope you don't keep the same lame achievements that were in the original game.  Most of these achievements were silly and were achieved by sitting around and waiting for them to happen.

They don't necessarily need to be removed, but "earn X credits from trade ports" is basically just a filler as far as achievements go.  Others could be made more interesting and less annoying by rewording them.  Rather than having "Harmony Researcher" require you to fill out the entire technology tree (which is just a time tax seeing as you'd already have the game long-since won by the time you're capable of doing this), why not award the achievement the moment you win if you don't have any hostility tech researched?  Simply rewording some of these old achievements makes them much more streamlined without changing its real intent (no military tech).

Here are some ideas for new achievements:

Blitzkrieg:  Defeat an unfair-difficulty opponent in under one hour on the random-small map.  You cannot load a saved game.

Interstellar Sanctions:  Defeat an unfair difficulty opponent without having to use the black market on the random small map.  You cannot load a saved game.

Master Comp Stomper: Defeat five teamed unfair difficulty AI's (locked teams) on a randomly generated map.  You cannot load a saved game.

Expansionist: Acquire a total of 9 planets within the first 20 minutes of the game on a randomly generated map.

Total Invulnerability: Within a 1-minute time span, kill 100 enemy frigates without losing a single frigate of your own.

Down to the Wire: Have a capital ship phase jump out of a gravity well with less than 1% of its total hull points remaining.

Don't Blink: Deal over 5000 damage in under 10 seconds to a single target.

Let's get some multiplayer-only achievements, while we're at it:

Serious Business:  Win a multiplayer match against human players (no AI opponents/allies).

Steamroller:  In a multiplayer match against human players, destroy twice as many frigates than you lose in combat

Last Resort:  Destroy over 200 enemy human-controlled units by using "Security Override Protocol" of the Argonev starbase.

Lights Out:  Disable over 100 human-controlled units simultaneously with the Stilakus Subverter.

Can't Touch This:  Repulse over 100 human-controlled units simultaneously with the Iconus Guardian.

Multiplayer Veteran:  Play a total of 30 multiplayer matches against human opponents (no AI's)

Theme time!

You have failed me for the last time: Scuttle a badly damaged ship.

I have a bad feeling about this: Jump a scout into the midst of an enemy fleet.

That's no moon...: Fully upgrade a starbase.

Loosen up!: Suppress enemy fighters using only your own fighters.

Look at the size of that thing!: Destroy a large target (Capital ship, starbase, or Titan) with only fighters.

Stay on target: Destroy a large target with strikecraft while the enemy holds strikecraft superiority.

It's a trap!: Have an enemy fleet jump on top of your smaller fleet while you cannot see them approaching.

That's impossible!: Form an alliance with a long standing enemy.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo: Blow up your own envoy. (Without scuttling.)

Keep in mind that an achievement cannot be subjective or ambiguous.  You'll need to define what you mean by "suppress", and "strikecraft supremacy".   Of course I know, in abstract terms, what you mean, but a computer needs a concrete definition if this is to be implemented.

here are some more:

these are hard times: win the game without building trade ports.

best offence is a good defence: build 5 fully upgraded starbases.

KABOOM: destroy a Titan.

indoctrination: get an enemy planet to 0 allegiance.

searching for the Grail: fully explore 25 owned planets.

I'll try to find some more tomorrow. Good night!

Well, I have a pretty good idea how likely they are to be implemented, so I don't really care enough to put more detail in.

Puppet Master: Defeat an enemy using pirate raids instead of directly engaging. (i.e. have an enemy surrender because of a pirate raid/mission launched because of you)

Let's get some multiplayer-only achievements, while we're at it:

That sounds like a good idea; add some real achievements and let the hordes of single player people look at them and say, "Huh?  There's more to this game than playing AIs?".

Capital Killer:  Kill 5 human-controlled capital ships in one game.

Homewrecker:  Bomb out two different human players' home planets.

I Fought John James and Won:  Win 10 games against teams that have John James's (account) playing on the opposing team.

Mano Y Mano:  Win 50 1v1 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Eco Whore:  Feed over 250,000 credits to allies in a game against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

For games played, the achievements should probably increase incrementally with the number of games played.  Players who've played fewer than 5 games against human opponents on ICO would receive the title of "Noob!"

Noob!:  Play 0-4 games against human opponents on Ironclad Onine (no AIs).

No Longer a Virgin:  Play 5 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Sins Cadet:  Play 25 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

You Have Cajones:  Play 50 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

No Loner a Noob:  Play 100 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Captain Competitive:  Play 200 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Veteran:  Play 500 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Grizzled Veteran:  Play 750 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Sins Pro:  Play 1000 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

Sins Master:  Play 1500 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs)

Legendary Sinner:  Play 2000 games against human opponents on Ironclad Online (no AIs).

There should also be a separate track based on total wins against human opponents on ICO (no AIs).

I think a rating system based on a elo like system (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/trueskill/) would work better than just "play x games", which might cause players to just join and drop games in orter to increase the number of games payed.

It would be cool if such a rating system of say, 50 levels, with stupid silly titles from "red shirt" to "Galactic Emperor"

lv 0-1: redshirt

lv 2-3: lieutenant

lv 4-5: Fighter Pilot

lv 6-7: Gun commander

lv 8-9 : Senior Brige Officer

lv 10-11: Frig First Officer

lv 12-13: Corvette Captain

lv 14-15: Cobalt Captain

lv 16-17: Krosov Captain

lv 18-19: Carrier commander

lv 20-21: Heavy Cruiser Captain

lv 22-23: Capital First Officer

lv 24-25:Strike force commander

lv 26-27: Donov Captain

lv 28-29: Akkan Captain

lv 30-31: Sova Captain

lv 32-33: Marza Captain

lv 34-35: Kol Captain

lv 36-37: Starbase Commander

lv 38-39: Rear Admiral

lv 40-41: Titan Captain

lv 42-43: Fleet Admiral

lv 44-45: Master tactician

lv 46-47: Theater commander

lv 48+:  Galactic Emperor

Some Achievment Ideas:

Schorched Earth:  Deal 1000 damage to a planet in 30 seconds

WTF Useless!: Build a planetary shield on a planet with a starbase and aux gov.

Brick:   Have a KOL be repaired 90+hp per second with lv3(4,5?) adaptive force field active.

Skip to the end:  Use a kostra to jump your fleet straight to the enemy HW, and destroy it.

This must be cheating: Have four+ teammates all research pervasive econ in a single multiplayer game.

One man Army: Your only military unit is a titan (colony ships, scouts, envoys, constructors dont count)

FIRE EVERYTHING!!!:  Use 2 missle barrages at the same time in a multiplayer game.

Power level:  Deal over 9000 damage in a single update tick to a single target. (easier than it sounds)

Duel Gauss Chain gun:  have 2 kols use lv 3 (4,5?) gauss railgun on a single target while under the effect of last stand and flux field.

Interspecias relations:  Have a human ally of another race use a capital ability on your ships.

Instant bombardment:  Research 3 levels of pinpoint bombardment, and 2 levels of gravity tolerance, and have a vulkuras under the influnce of distort gravity jump to an enemy gravity well.

Run away!:  Order your fleet to retreat from an owned gravity well when you outnumber the enemy 2:1 (enemy fleet must be at least 50 fleet supply)

SOLAR empire:  build 4 starbases in a single sun, and upgrade them each at least 4 times.

Phase drive offline!:  Inturrupt the phase jump charge up sequence of an enemy capital ship 5 times within 2 minutes.

Your doing it wrong:  Cast animosity, and then cast vengence on something other than a battleship.

Totally helpless: Use both vertigo and disorientation on the same enemy at the same time.

Nice try: have an enemy try and cast an interupt on a capital ship using a channeling ability and being healed by a domina.

No time to rest:  No military unit idle for longer than a single minute for the entire match.

And...: assuming Impulse reactor does have some sort of better rating system:

Decent player: maintain a drop rate of less than 15% in multiplayer matchs.  (must play >20 matchs)

Faithful ally: maintain a drop rate of less than 10% in multiplayer matchs.  (must play >20 matchs)

Sticking with it till the end: maintain a drop rate of less than 5% in multiplayer matchs.  (must play >20 matchs)

Bad connection: Maintain a drop rate of greater than 20% in multiplayer matchs. (must play >20 matchs)

Risky ally: Maintain a drop rate of greater than 35% in multiplayer matchs. (must play >20 matchs)

Quitter: Maintain a drop rate of greater than 50% in multiplayer matchs.  (must play >20 matchs)

Questionable tactics: Dont do anything for 20 min durring a team multiplayer match within the last 50 matchs.

No one home:  Dont do anything for 40 min durring a team multiplayer match within the last 75 matchs.

Griefer:   Dont do anything for 60 min durring a team multiplayer match within the last 100 matchs.

Some random ones:

Could you get us a bit closer?: Lose 100 ships to enemy mines

Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead: Lose a Cap Ship to enemy mines

Never Give Up, Never Surrender: Win after being pushed back to one planet (after expanding to a certain number of planets, of course)

Give It All She's Got: Destroy 50 enemy ships with one of yours in five minutes or less

Power Ten: Get your first Cap Ship to level ten (higher?) and don't let it be destroyed for the entire game

Tortoise: Don't send a ship to a hostile gravity well for two hours (Very possible in a big map vs vicious AI)

England Expects Every Man Will Do His Duty: Without reinforcing yourself, clear a gravity well of hostile ships where the enemy started out outnumbering you 2:1 (FS)

Base Delta Zero: Bombard a planet from 6000 hp to 0 in less than one minute with one ship (how strong is the bombardment on a titan?)

Mercantilism: Win with a trade port or starbase with trade facilities in every gravity well (except magnetic clouds)

A Camel Through the Eye of a Needle: Win with maxed credits, metal, and crystal

Boarders Away!: Capture 50 ships with the domination ability

If you can mod these, perhaps DS could have something like:

I sank the Pearl: Destroy a pirate level 10 Cap Ship

some more ideas....

Medic!: heal 10000 hull or shield points of an ally, not within your gravity wells.

A few more for all-human multiplayer:

Skilled/No Smurfs: Get booted from a ten player game for a player with a 0-0 record.

Daisy, Daisy: Participate in a ten player game that holds a minimum and non-lagging frame rate for two hours.

They Shoot Horses Don't They?: Achieve a single victory in an multiplayer FFA with more than four players (which is why we still need an artifact victory condition to get a faster-paced game without the arbitrariness of the Diplomatic Victory)

Jekyll and Hyde: Acquire a stalker who imitates your online name, only adding a space afterward.

Et Tu Brute: Achieve the dubious honour of being selected as a team captain in a 5v5 team match (will Rebellion have some sort of format for team games which includes the concept of a captain?)

We Few: Win a multiplayer game with fewer players than the opposing team.

We Happy Few: Win a multiplayer game with two less players than the enemy team.

We Band Of Ruthless Bastards: Win a multiplayer game with three less players than the enemy team.

I have given this subject my usual further consideration, and taken advice on the topic.  Initially those I consulted were openly scornful of the concept of 'achievements', but after discussion they claimed that there were only two possible 'achievements' of any note:

Emperor: The title awarded to the best online player.  There need not be an Emperor, but there can only be one if there is one.  The Emperor should have crushed all possible rivals, I suppose.

Apprentice: Only if Sins already has an Emperor can an Apprentice emerge, a player who dominates all opposition except that of the Emperor himself.

I have also been musing on the concept of multiplayer FFA games, which are unpopular online, for two main reasons as it seems to me: the lack of any decent mechanism for ensuring that the game does not drag on forever, and as significantly, the lack of any reward for fighting during a game.  Never mind any combat losses, Sins is the sort of game where in FFA if you have to produce a fleet early you are doomed, as there is no advantage to conquering an opposing empire other than that of the basic planets they formerly owned, which the conqueror then has to develop again from scratch.  You can't really capture anything.  This leads to very dull FFA.  Something could usefully be done about these issues- I've often suggested that an artifacts-based system would avoid the problems that the current Diplomatic Victory system has.  As just one idea to encourage fighting, perhaps the pacts system could also be the basis for some sort of reward for conquering a rival empire?

WIth the way the sins plays... it would be impossible to have such achievements.   Map randomness can determain the outcome of a game before it even starts, (or at least rediculously heavilly favor a player)...  While a ladder system, with a #1 player, and a #2 player should be possible, someone able to beat everyone consistantly... not possible.

A post made by an embittered member of the so-called webel alliance, no doubt.  Many have disputed the possibility of the return of an Emperor, and have been proved wrong.

Viability would depend on the criteria.  If you allowed the Emperor, if there was one, to have to be among the top five rated players, and also to have defeated the other four in their last rated encounter, that would be achievable, no?

Much also depends on how a ladder system will work, of course.  I would hope that there were no random maps involved, for the reasons you describe.  We have too little knowledge of what the future will bring to make declarations about the impossible, my friend.

Just a miscellaneous idea, but I think in addition to unlocking achievements, for achievements that can be unlocked each game (DesConnor's Emperor, Damn the Torpedoes, that capitalship only achievement etc.) it would be nice if it counted the number of times you got the achievement. As it is know, you can only unlock an achievement once and it doesn't notify you if you qualify again.

Also just a quick idea.

Show Off: Earn 5 or more achievements from the same game.
