Cut and Paste Error

Ok--I modified the basic planet files and then pasted them back over the originals.  They were edited original files converted to text and then back to bin.

I'm looking at planet files and they reside in the vanilla Sins and Entrnchment folders (aside from the pirate base)--so that's where I put them.

I actually booted the game in dev mode and made it onto the map--saw one of my colonizable planets had the stats I had changed--great.  I surrendered then game minidumped after a few minutes of watching the AI.

So I restarted a few times but after got a minidump each time.  The dev build indicated errors with the Asteroid file--entry not found.  I replaced it with the vanilla one and then the DeadAsteroid file had an error.  I replaced it and the AsteroidField had an error.  So I figure I edited something in the asteroids that I didn't do correctly and replaced them all--leaving only the actual planets (two types of which I did see in game working the one time).  Still minidumped with a variety of errors before.  Textures, graphics, skyboxes--things I never altered or touched nor did I rename the files.  All I changed were numbers of resources and logistics slots.

Any clues?  Suggestions?  Is the game checking the files like online and seeing they don't match?

Ok--here's an update.  Got another crash with something showing about direct x--others before mentioned the game engine.  This time when I restarted it skipped out of play once with a dev pop-up about something arcane and when I selected skip, I was able to continue playing and had no other problems.

I am playing the dev build but it is a clone of my install and I ran that for over seven hours today with no issues and the untouched directory I cloned from runs fine with no errors--as did this one till I changed logistic values.

Right now I am leaving my changed files in text format while I debug. Are there any differnces between Entrnchment and Vanilla planet entity files?  I am editing them seperately to be safe but would love to not do so if I don't have to.

Ok--Played through a short game with no crashes.  I am about to do the asteroids.  Basically just want to change (reduce) the number of resource asteroids about them.

I noticed that I was one short of civilian facilities on the planets I* made--instead of six there were five, instead of eight, seven and so on--is this because the extractors are taking slots?

I'll post how it goes after the asteroids.  I did also swap the same files into entrenchment and vanilla with no issues.

Are you modding the base game files? Or are you making mods for all the expansions?

Well Ideally since I am doing a pretty light mod there is no reason I can't do it for all (and I prefer to so anyone can play)--I just played in all three versions and my planets showed up in each so that's good.  I haven't got the asteroids in yet--they are next.

I had a horrible time when I first tried modding back in vanilla because Entrenchment wa just coming out and the forum was littered with broken, incomplete and innacurate directions--plus the game crashed a lot back then (not to mention some of the file converters were buggy).  So it was really difficult to figure what was my own mistake and what was just a generic error and what was bad information.  Thanks to the more recent efforts by you and others, it's gotten a lot easier to tell what's working and what's suspect.

It was compounded tonight becasue the gui converter by BCExtreme suddenly began to malfunction for the first time ever on me (it needs to run as administrator first and in compatibility mode for Windows 7).  So I had to sort what was my error and what was the converter's (it works fine now that it's in compatibility).

So yeah, I'd like to do it for all and go play Eve sometime so I can tap you for some graphics help later ;)

In this play through, my planet slots were not "-1"...I had the actual values I entered show.  This game has spooky things going on inside it.

Still sounds to me like your modding the base game which is a nono. Where is your modded files folder? Why dont you just use the reference files? No planet changes in the beta.

Playing the eve tutorials now and have a few new sweet models from eve ready for sins. Can you do that buddy thing and give me 30 more days on my account?

You can use the one I sent the info for and play for five months--plus create a new char from the empty pilot slot there as well.

Tri_Exporter will take the models from the Eve DX9 folder.

Right now I am modding the base files just so I can tell right off if I have bjorked something.  I have a second directory of the game.   No one slapped my hand and said, "No! No!".

I have no idea where I should properly place the actual complete mod or what the reference files are I modify (string files maybe?).  I'm glad it isn't crashing and works so far.

Meesa nub boss man.

I have two more 21 day invites I can give if someone wants to try the extended Eve trial (I like Sins better).  Message me.  it will not apply to a current acount--It has to be a new one but if you decide to pay later, you still keep the trial time you have left.

as long as its a second directory i guess its ok and you can always verify install on imulse which will kill all modded files.

If you go to options -> mods -> show mod path. Thats where you start your mod. Make a new folder in tha directory and name the folder what you want your mod called. Inside your new mod folder create all the folders like GameInfo and String and Textures etc. Look inside the base games Diplomacy directory for all the folders the mods can use. Then place your modded files in the new mods propper folders and enable the mod and test with the dev.

Working thru all those tutorials in eve 1st. Use up those 2 weeks anyway and get a feel for the game. Got 3 ships now. Already have triexporter and have a bunch of assets moved to my eve mod

Will do--go play the Eve account now!  There is an empty pilot slot in the account I sent you--meaning it's a compleete new start--any race, any direction just set it up.  If you don't like it, then you can delete it and nine hours later be in a new char.  The other two are more developed and you would hang onto them for long term play.  Even if your own character you create becomes your "main" they can provide missions and income while you build him up.  Behind every good main are great alts ;)  If you are lucky, they will have station and ship 'ambulation' going before the time on the account runs out.

I kinda figured that's how it worked but I want a fast and easy way to run and check.  Never did the asteroids last night--I'm just doing them now (if you need pass and all again for Eve, pm/email me).

One question, all you need in the mod directories (mirroring the game ones) are the files actually changed yes?  Or am I wrong?

I have the coverted files you made and have been using the Weebly too--great work there.

I think I'll be modding the Celestial bodies mod (with credit of course and after I learn how to not break the game) as DS is a lot to rework.  I love the differnt planet sizes there.  I also may do a "minimalist" mod where I replace all models with very low poly/simple texture types just to see the impact on the game.  Might even have some fun with it.  Call it a proof of concept and it might work great for netbook owners and the like.

Can anyone start corresponding with me on how to rework the gas giant so that it can be owned by the pirate faction and have a damage buff on enemies that doesn't effect pirates?   I have played with some of the abilities and while I can run the game, i'm not getting the combination right and so far it has not produced an effect.

Yes. Both those links I sent state that Diplomacy and Entrenchment only require modded files because they use manifests where vanilla does not so you will need the complete set of reference files in the mod.

I think I still have the account and pw. I will let you know.

Yeah--please use it.  I was leveling it once every few days (resetting skill training) but I just don't have time to really play hard at it.  So it wasn't doing me much good...I primarily liked keeping up with the developments but I can trial them anytime.

So please--take my gift.  Now we are like family and one day I will ask you for a modding favor that you can't refuse.
