An option for feedback on low ratings

An option for feedback on low ratings

Automated emails

I wonder if it might be possible for the accepted or rejected automated email from the wallpaper moderator to have a link at the bottom of the message so that some feedback or guidance can be obtained if required by the person submitting the work? Like most people, I have read all the guidelines, which give a lot of leeway to Stardock and the moderator. Apart from the main general rules and guidelines, there is always the open question of taste and preference, which must also affect decisions. I am sure that I am not alone in finding the ratings given at times quite mystifying.

I understand that the moderator(s) have a lot of ground to cover, but surely some understanding should be given to subscribers and customers who spend a lot of time in producing their work for free and then making various sizes, preparing additional comments and a preview, and uploading all the work in an acceptable form. A quick means of querying a rating given, and getting some specific guidance would be helpful and a nice courtesy to the customer, who is after all, paying for the privilege.

It can be very demoralising to have work given a low rating and confined to your personal site where very few people will see it, or have the opportunity to download it.  This is particularly annoying when you don't understand why.

I apologize if I sound so upset. But when I get rejected for a public gallery, I would at least like to know why. (Especially since I am a Customer)

Lets make one thing clear.  Being a "customer" has absolutely no influence one way or another on WC moderation.  The mods in most parts can't even see your customer status.

For wallpapers, Jafo or I would be the ones to inquire about why something was sent to PP or rejected.

Just for general reference, I will give reasons why I do so:

  • Poor quality is the #1 reason why.  Wallpapers that were generated with something like Bryce or Apo that were literally created in 2 minutes just will just not make it.

  • Unless they have some spectacular design element - spheres, squares, etc. on a colored base are also something not appealing as a wallpaper.

Let me just say, I for one HATE the upload process. If My work sucks so bad that you think its not worthy for me to share for FREE with the community, then dont put it on my personal page only, and with a 1 or 2 star rating!!!!

Post reference to your option of not having works go to your personal page - in the upload description and the moderators will oblige as may be warranted....;)

Pizentu - I've had stuff go to my personal gallery, and it gets downloaded by a select few despite the fact that it's not public.  I like to think of my personal gallery like my personal stash for my specialty stuff--things that wouldn't necessarily appeal to a large number of people.  People who follow my work and have sort of figured me out, know that some of my art displays some phases I'm going through in my personal life, some things I'm working out in my mind that I express in my work that goes into my personal gallery and they download it because they can appreciate that.

Just because something goes into your personal gallery doesn't mean it sucks -- it means it's not yet ready for prime time, and if you stick it out, people might check your personal gallery out to see what other strange things are going on inside you.  You could use the work that goes into your personal gallery in a screen shot, and then someone might see it -- or you could post it over in the Personal Page Elite thread https://forums.wincustomize.com/?postid=150760 (pick up your ward and follow the instructions) and be part of a growing number of community members who accept the moderators' judgment and make the best of it.

Until now, I never realized how much that sounds like 'come drink the Kool-Aide'. X|

But seriously, we have all been there. Don't let it get you down. It's what has helped myself and a lot of folks become better artists. ;)

i had a wallpaper go into my pp, i always assumed it was there because you could see her bum...

Since the new site went live, personal pages are extremely hard to find. Can we please get a listing or address book of personal sites back?

I was looking for navigatsio's site and gallery yesterday and was unable to find it. I even tried entering the address manually and it's just not there. (http://navigatsio.wincustomize.com)

I know I can get a partial look at his gallery by clicking his profile but that's just a partial list. I also know I can get a list of his skins but there are no preview pictures so you have to click on each one if you're looking for a particular skin.

I have to believe that some people wouldn't mind if their work went to their personal page if there was a way for that gallery to be found.

With as many people that have shown their asses around here, I find it hard to believe your wall got bumped over just one more. ;)

All I am asking for, Like most others that I have read in the past few months, is for the  mod that rejects our uploads to have the common decency to tell us why he/she thinks our upload is not good enough to share for FREE with the public. Atleast that way we can improve on the work we have spent our worthless time on.

Edit to clean up.

umm....  really bad form comparing others work to yours in the forums...

just about all of us have had work rejected and we have been disappointed... no reason to call the mods... 'snotty'...and threaten to leave our 'elitist' community...

why not try joining in this thread...   link...    or make your own... and get honest critique from the community so you can improve...  ;)

I dont have a big problem with having my work rejected. My problem is having it shoved under the carpet (sent to a private page) and not telling me why its not good enough for the mods opinion to make it to the public gallery. I dont waste all my time doing stuff to have it hidden on a personal page no one will ever see.

What I,and like most others are asking for is a REASON why we get rejected or swept under the rug to a Personal page. When you reject us, tell us why you wont allow it into the public gallery so we can try to work on getting it presentable. Instead people just get rejected and are given no real reason

Is that too much to ask??

But whatever. I am just a dumb sucker that gave these guys my money and probably about to be banned for voicing my aggravation.

Because it was generic crap seen a million times before...from anyone who just tripped over an image generating program.

It's only saving grace was it wasn't 'blue' as then it would have been a 'blue swirlie'.

If you believe all your works MUST be seen then Deviantart.com is the place.  They have no upload/submission moderation.....none at all.

Should your works be lost there amongst a flood of equivalence then so be it.

Your links posted in #34 have been removed.

Repetition of their posting will see you join them.

All I am asking for, Like most others that I have read in the past few months, is for the Snotty mod that rejects our uploads to have the common decency to tell us why he thinks our upload is not good enough to share for FREE with the public. Atleast that way we can improve on the work we have spent our worthless time on. No offense but I have seen some really crappy uploads on the public galleries in all areas that would not even deserve the right to be uploaded to a personal page. Check my personal page, (If you can find it. I know I have troubles getting to it) and tell me why the F*&$% it deserved 1 star and only available on my personal page. Its my one and only logon studio submission to this point. If nothing I share is worth a damn than give me my $60 some odd dollars back and I will gladly not be apart of your elitist community.

Not being a Gallery Mod, my remarks should also not be taken as "mutual admiration society/old boy club".

There isn't a single "snotty Mod" amongst the the Mods who do the thankless (by people like you) work of having to judge "Originality, propriety and artistic appeal/worth" of any given submission. There isn't a single snotty Mod. You should not call names out of anger. The Gallery Mods have years (and in a few instances a decade or more) of experience as artists and Moderators. They are also good people. Each and every one has been through what you are going through.

Don't imply politics play a part. You might be a "right wing nut job" or a "left wing nut job". Don't imply that Moderation is political. Just don't. It is not. If looking for a reason for Private Gallery assignment, look at your own ability first.

Every submission is looked at by more than one Mod and they vote and only when consensus is reached is anything accepted (Public Gallery or Private vs Rejection - and reason given) . You, are a committee of one, and not an objective one.

They keep this place out of court. If I don't thank them enough, here's another "Thanks, guys!". Since becoming a Mod (and knowing my "artistic" limitations) I have submitted one photo only, and requested that be Moderated like anyone else's. I wish you had that attitude, as improvement would come more quickly and less painfully.

That's the system here. Accept it and its inherent good and less good points as well as your own... or submit at deviant Art an/or other sites and see what the reaction is and number of dl's... in some ways, a better measure and in some ways worse.

Why don't you do this:

Take the submission assigned to Personal Gallery and make a Post asking for "Suggestions For Improvement Requested". Then, dismiss any comments made by friends (if "Hey, this is great! No improvement needed" - because Michaelangelo you are not, right?). Heed the suggestions and see where it goes...

I am really confused after reading this thread. Contained within my uploads have been "push button" wallpapers which I actually created in under 5 minutes that have been accepted onto the sites gallery and there was 1 wallpaper which I actually spent a lot of time getting right in my minds eye, that was rated as pp material.

Now if you think about it, knowing which buttons to push, and apparently for how long doesn't really matter. It's the result that matters.

All you need do is upload a result that pushes the buttons of the moderators, unless you avoid moderation. Otherwise it's pp material.

Truth is no matter who you are, you will see stuff you swear should have never made it to the public gallery and stuff you will swear should have.

Wait....I could have been 'bribing' the mods all these years?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

son of a.......

Seriously, though...your 'money' (subscription, whatever) is not a factor in whether your art makes the gallery.

You need to check out the thread everyone keeps pointing you to and actually take some of your energy and use it reading it through. Besides a lot of funny stuff, there are a lot of good tips and a lot of folks relating the same frustration you are expressing. I think I can speak for the majority who have had things sent to their personal gallery when I say it only helped make them better.

As someone who submitted four different versions of the same wallpaper before it made the gallery I can personally say it helped me look at what I was attempting to do a lot harder and and with new eyes.

First, I want to apologize to the Mods for my behavior the other night. I had a bit too much to drink and made an axx of myself. I have gone back and cleaned my mess.

As to this quoted post and many directed at me like this, I think you are TOTALY missing the point. As what the Original Post is all about and what I have been asking is simply for the mod that rejects/reviews submissions, to simply leave a remark in the reply that our work was "excepted" (Yet when we check the site it only made it to our Personal page. That remark would tell the submitter why the mods have decided that the package was not good enough for everyone to see it. It could be a simple -

"Congratulations, Your package was excepted to upload. Unfortunately we feel your package is:

Low quality, or Far too similar to the hundreds of other packages already on the wall, or We feel this doesnt represent Wincustomize well, or even, We just dont like you.

What ever the reason, at least you could tell us so that submitters would have an idea what to improve on to make it acceptable, or maybe even dump that particular project and begin a new one. I can take my pix to the threads you are referring to but its no help because the members arent the ones rejecting the packages its the mods. If the reviewer is not telling me whats wrong, how can I possible improve what he is not liking.

That is my Gripe. Being put on the PP is not the problem, Its the lack of being given a reason.

I do not think that being a customer means I have to have any of my work uploaded to the wall. Having respect as a member/customer in telling me why its bad so I can improve, start over, or find a new hobby is ALL I am asking.

Perhaps its my bad education and I am not stating my case clearly. Incase I still come of as a jilted member, just ignore the post and keep from bashing me more.

Essentially...if an upload goes to your Personal Page [and you had NOT intended it to - you hadn't clicked that option] then that is the case/reason...

OTHER THAN THE LAST "we just don't like you".

The Moderators do not care who is submitting an upload...unless there's a flood of submissions and they are all from the one person...then 'who' becomes relevant.  Otherwise the 'what' is important, not the 'who'.

If you seek to improve your chances/success/approval of submissions [particularly to the wallpaper gallery] you can seek public opinion in the Forums.  Both Mods AND general members alike have extensive schooling/experience in graphics, graphic art, skinning, et al.

The most common reason for rejection [or diverting to PP] is "same old same old", in other words it's all been done before [and better] so yet another Bryce/Torus/Poser/Fractal/Apophysis/Blue Swirlie/floating spere/etc is likely to end up on "the cutting room floor" somewhere....;)
