Windows 7 SP1 released

Windows 7 SP1 released

Have you installed it yet?

Well, I installed the public release of SP1 for Windows 7 64 bit today and everything went fine. My system was already up to date and it was a little over an 85mb download.

I think I'll run a few benchmarks to see if it effects performance in any fashion just for the heck of it.

Anyone else updated yet?

I think there's something wrong with mine. Its at 24% and doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I'm just downloading it now.... been stuck at 24% for about 15 minutes.  Hopefully it'll get a wriggle on shortly. :sun:

Whoa... Update.

In the time it took me to type the above, it went from 24% to 59%.... like wow, and thank goodness it ain't dragging so much.

Like Bugger me Update

It had done downloading in the time I did the previous update 'til now... like in less than a couple of minutes..

Installing now.... not too sluggish, either. :)

For me the installation is ended! Everything is OK  :)

... Less than one hour!

And the requests seem faster...

A couple of times when updating programs have required a restart of got the bit about configuring the computer and that it will shut down when it is finished.  Problem is it just stays there for 5 or 10 or 15 minutes, and gives no indication when it will finish or its progress.  Both times (the second time with the Windows 7 Service Pack 1) I just rebooted, and started Windows normally, and it seems to be okay.  But I really, really, *really* don't like it when they say to wait and there is no progress indicator or shown percentage, and 15 minutes later, no sign that *anything* productive is being done.  It's one thing to wait when you know how things are going.  It's another thing to wait, leaving your whole computer in a state where it can't be used, for who knows how long.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Best regards,
Steven.

Haven't seen that one, Steven.

One caveat, folks: Like every software update, SP1 has a space requirement: Much of that is reclaimable, though.

If you haven't been notified by your Windows Update Manager about W7 SP1 being available, there's a good article about it here:

Well Mine is all installed and everything is sweet.  I've had dinner in between the obligatory reboot and now... but all up it took under an hour from start to finish/my new Win7SP1 desktop.

Anyway, so far so good!  Things do seem a little snappier/more responsive, but then they never were sluggish to begin with.

Has anyone else had this problem?

No, just the hang at 24% here.  Everything else went quickly after that, and during shutdown/restart post-installation there was a progress bar to denote the percentage completed.

I see I'm not the only one with a nuisance thing. Mine hung up at 24$ then a minute later it jumped to 51% for about ten minutes then jumped to 91%. The last 9% took nearly twenty minutes but the install took over half an hour. Boot time is the same though. Less than two minutes. And it does seem a bit more responsive. I think I'll run cinebench and see how it goes.

I ran a few benchmarks and the performance of the 2 systems I checked is around the same as before SP1.

Just about everything I read shows SP1 to be about stability so I didn't really expect any performance differances. Time will tell though since I haven't had a chance to really check everything out.

I guess this is where MS gets to download all of the not important downloads that I've been carefully ignoring/avoiding.

"Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 includes previously released updates"

I've been looking for a list of "what" is in the SP (besides remotefx and dynamic memory, both which seemed geared toward businesses) but haven't seen anything.

I do not like cumulative updates and will probably wait until the feedback starts to come in.

Same here.

Updated today around 1.00pm to avoid a sloppy connection to the MS servers.
update took 15 minutes total...everything went fine only IE9 installed in english for a strange reason nothing big but strange.
Windows performance index remained the same 7.9
I ran a couple of test to see how stable everything is using Prime and some other tools... works fine and seems stable

I have had my build of SP1 Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Build 7601.17514.101119-1850 for a Month now since it was first leaked, For a short while Softpedia had this same exact build on there site. If you want to remove all the back up files to free disc space SP1Creates, here are the instructions. However remember if you remove all the backup files you cannot uninstall SP! The following are the instructions

How to cleanup old hot fix information after installing SP1 (cleanup tool)

Once Service Pack 1 is installed you may opt to remove old information regarding old hot fixes and the SP1 un-installation tool as well. Note that if you perform this step you can NEVER remove SP1! It may behoove you to keep a full image pre SP1 backup of your system if you ever want to go back

On most systems you should expect between 500MB and 1.5GB of space recovered by running this program. To run you must launch a command prompt with Administrator privileges, then execute the following command:

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

Download, install, and reboot took 20 to 30 minutes. All went well. Running Windows 7 Pro 64Bit.

My laptop did something strange: Got a notification about some operation going on and that it would shut down afterwards. Well, this hung for over 30 min, so I hard booted. SP1 didn't install, so I went to Windows updte and installed and no probs. Very strange happenings.

If you download through Windows Update it only downloads what is missing from the system to bring it up to SP1.  If you download the whole SP1 there is ine for x32 and x64, the x64 one being 903.2 MB.  If you want both download the .iso as it contains both x32 and x64 installs.

Good tip.  I'm using this option as when I tried to use IE to update (which is all I use it for), it would validate then not return me to the install page.  When I went to the install page...it would return me to the validate page.  Let's do the time warp again.

So I switched over to Firefox, did the validation tool there and then was able to update...only I couldn't.  MS says, "insufficient disk space for install".  Yeah...I only have 246gb left on this drive--meh.

So that led me to why I am glad I saw this post and I went right there...with firefox...with another validation--and just downloaded the whole iso...which I will burn to a disk...like this experience is now burned in my memory :)

See reply #29 in this thread.  I didn't get the problem with SP1 not installing though, just the hanging when restarting.

Steven.

I found the best way to install sp1 for windows 7 x86 was through safe mode. I tried about four times with windows update and kept getting errors. I downloaded the installer, re-booted into safe mode and thst was it. I let it do its thing and now its all done. took about 45 min.

Good thing I didn't opt for the whole thing. I'd still be doing it. lol 900mb. wow!

I installed sp1 with no problems, other than it being a slow download.  my sytem is still working like a charm.

Gotta love Windows Update...now I have 34 optional updates showing available. SP1 unhid all of the optional language packs.

Easy fix...click on the Arabic pack , hold shift and click the Ukrainian pack, right click and hide updates...done.

With a good net connection, it may have been faster. It took me 15 minutes to download the 64bit CD from their server and another 20 minutes to install the update.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with what others provide, slow or not so slow. Maybe one day when I get rich and infamous. lol

You're already infamous, Uvah... with a reputation longer than my arm for being totally kooky. ;P :w00t: :-"

But you're my kind of people.
