[eMOD] Distinct Factions v0.6 [To be merged]

[eMOD] Distinct Factions v0.6 [To be merged]

An effort to make each faction unique

*NOTE: I am updating these when I feel like it. Check back often to see the pics, I've been making small adjustments to each.

Ok, so the idea behind this mod is to make each faction unique. Right now, it is focusing on the 5 normal armor sets which are gained through the warfare tech tree. Weapons are also being assigned slightly different numbers. Not necessarily to balance, per se, but to have certain factions use other weapons (instead of, for instance, all factions end up using the war staff, as it has an attack of 15). The highest attack value will still be 15, however, which weapon has the attack value of 15 will vary depending on the faction.

Note: This mod hides the core factions, and sovereigns. If you don't want to hide them (for instance you are running a mod which modifies the core factions/sovereigns), you can delete the two files in the core DF folder (DF_HideCoreFactions.xml, and DF_HideCoreSovereigns.xml).

The mod is available here: https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/elemental_war_of_magic/31/

A very nice mod. This will really help liven up the visual aspect of combat and troop production. All units looking the same always bugged me to no end. Makes combat really boring... I really like how unique the factions are looking.

You probably have a good reason but since you seem to want input their are two small things that bug me. They are how Paridan tier 1 uses basically all leather and the chainmail for Capitar tier 1. They seem to advanced for tier 1 and out of place. For Paridan why did you use leather and not padded? Instead of chainmail you could use the noble surcoat even though it is being used by Lord Relias. Also their are hats that could substitute for helmets, like the Fezz and Flat Cap.

Thanks for the input. Of what I was thinking with Pariden and Capitar...I kind of see them as being more armor focused out of the kingdoms. With Tarth, I'm trying to give them ONLY leather armor. They may end up with one set that has metal, but we'll see. I'm pretty happy with how Capitar looks (I understand it seems out of place, but at tier 2 it would really look out of place). Pariden, I'm ok with, but if you have a different suggestion, I'm all ears. As far as leather vs padded, ...padded IS leather. It's one of the three leather sets. Tarth is going to be using mostly leather. I'm trying not to reuse pieces as much as possible. I also thought about the Noble Surcoat, but like you said, I'm already using it for Relias, and another one for Gilden. I forgot about hats, thank you. However, I did want a couple of the factions to not have any head gear for the first tier. I suppose this can be changed depending on overall feedback.

Hmmm... I've hit a slight snag with the Trogs (Yithril). One of their bonuses is to grant the Tools Of War tech on startup. Well, you can't remove selected abilities from the core sovreeigns (it will only add). Even after trying to rewrite the ability, still no luck. Even overwriting the equipment that comes with that tech doesn't work. So, the trogs may end up looking like all fallen do now for teir 1. I can't seem to get rid of that ability bonus on verga.

You can have shields with individual crests. Normally I wouldn't suggest it but since you're breaking up the tech tree it might actually work. I'll try to work something.

It would most likely be a non-circular shield form, so what I'd do is put the faction color as main shield colour, then a circular crest on top of that.

Edit: How about this? Then you can colour the metal of the shield using the metal colour instead. That will flow a lot better with the original shield texture, instead of having one bland colour.

Edit2: here's the original shield with altered metal colour http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9527/elemental1297590746.jpg

The great way about this is that we don't need to include ANY new skins, we can just reference the faction crest in the xml.

That's the ticket. It should be possible to create Masks that fit the different Shield shapes/types, then the Crest(s) could be welded to the Shield face without the excess background. Let me see if I can get an image up.

How would you get the crest on top of the other skin without making another seperate skin?

Different texture calls in the gameitemtype. The base skin is "metal" but I make the crest be clothing or whatever (since it's not see-through that colour won't matter).

- Fixed problem with bows not being able to be researched for Kingdoms

- Fixed problem of updated weapons abilities not showing up for weapons

- Added in the fallen first teir armor sets

To come in the next version:

- Add first level shields for all factions

- Split up sovereign armor sets (instead of one piece so that you can mix/match, the AI also doesnt handle the one piece thing too well)

- Add in second tier armor sets for all factions except Altar (theirs is already done)

Uploaded version 0.35

- Added 1st tier shields to all factions

- Broke apart armor sets for sovereigns.

- Added the 5 levels to the sovereign's weapon

The shields are essentially the same as the regular one you get at the first tech, just with the metal colored to suit the faction. Hopefully the next tier comes to me soon.

Yea, shields and armour I might be able to buy!  Have you checked out:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/405544

Has some nice new armour sets in there, don't know if Jounk33 is willing to share or not, but would really help your differentiation efforts.  Cheers.

Yeah, I saw it. Very ambitious mod. However, the goal of this mod is to just use the assets that came with the game. I've bent the rules a little bit to tint a couple of the textures, but it's still essentially the same texture. If you want to see all the different armor sets, look in the DF_TestArmor xml file. It has them all hooked up as one unit armor sets. Well, I dont think it has the unique ones for the sovereigns, but they are in their own seperate xml and directory.

Remember, right now, this is the framework, so not everything is priced as it should be. This will be getting tweaked once most of the sets are complete.

Quick bug fix. Replaced all original factions with new internalnames to avoid bugs in the future (this took care of the problem of disappearing icons with altar after researching weaponry).

Fair enough, I think this is coming along great.  Let us know when you are in more of a balance of costs frame of  mind; I have already reached the point of trying to string out the low armor troops relevance since they look so much better than everyone having the default!

Looks like you left in a sovereign too many, I see someone named Vergatest in-game.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted the latest version, heh. Anyways, thanks for adding support for DF in Expanded mounts, btw.

Hey, if you have ideas on the costs of things, or anything like that let me know. It's easy to adjust the cost for items. I'm just breezing through things to get the items in. Then I can make a sweep of all the costs. But if people give me input while I go, I can change it as I go.

Anyhow,

Uploaded version 0.4

- The factions, and sovreeigns are now duplicates (with unique internalnames to preserve compatibility with other mods, and cut down on problems). There are two files in the main DF folder. One his HideSovereigns the other HideFactions. These two files simply hide the core factions and sovreigns from being seen. If you want to see the original factions/sovs, or want to play a mod that modifies the core factions/sovs, then delete those two files.

- Added tier 2 armor sets for the 5 kingdoms

- Added in first two sets of weapons (not too much different than the core, but will get more unique in the future) for all 5 kingdoms

- Added in first tier weapons for all 5 empires (again, not really much different yet)

- Changed around some of the weapons for some factions. (Such as for Gilden, the axe is the most effective weapon, rather than the spear)
