Big cut in energy bill

As I mentioned last month, I started monitoring our energy usage very closely.

It turned out we had two key areas that were running away with power.  The first was keeping the pool room warm. That was costing us a fortune. And by warm I mean like 80 degrees (it’s supposed to be about the same temp as the water).  The other was the recirculating hot water which was using a lot of gas.

Using this knowledge and making lots of other adjustments, I cut our energy bill by 45% this past month! W00t.

Yea, but Brad, no heated pool?  What kind of third-world slave shop are you running there?  What are you going to take away next, bread and water, geez ;P

Way to green it up! I recycled my recyclable bins the other day. Now they are just bins.

A couple years ago, we put in a solar panel for our hot water heater and cut our power bill down a third (we live in Florida -- I don't know how much that would work for someone who didn't live where there's oodles of sunshine).

Now we're working on the water -- just had my hubby convert our toilets to dual-flush systems.  According to the advertising, we can cut our water consumption 15,000 gallons per year for a family of 4.  I really don't know if it will work, but it's cool to have 2 buttons to push.

You have an indoor pool?

Niiice. do want.

But telling people to turn off their indoor pool to save power is not really helpful advice for the majority of people on this planet.

Trying to consume less electricity is just another phrase for GODLESS COMMUNISM.

Next you'll be rounding up all the minorities for the camps.

Have you even begun to think what a slippery slope you are on?

I think he was less worried about being "Green" and more worried about wasting his green.  See what I did there, green for eco-bullshit and money?  Damn, I am clever.  I love me.

Capitalism is powerful because the government can create economic incentives to make the populace do just about anything. And we only need to conserve power until 2060 or so. That is when the whole fusion power thing kicks in and we just don't have to care anymore.

I do apreciate, Lord Xia, that you are progressively not caring about power usage. Such a futurist this guy.

In kind:

We only need to recycle metal until the first asteroid mining prison is built.

We only need to carpool until cars are replaced by maglevs and airshuttles.

We only need to reduce air polution and stop chopping forests until air recyclers can clean the air.

We only need to be at peace with China until we can build colonies in other systems.

Considering that the whole point of Frogboy's post is that he cut his energy bill, I'd say Xia's interpretation was right on the money. (Har-har).

We need to save the rainforest to protect oxygen-breathers like people.
If we can't save the rainforest, we should protect the algae, which produce most of the oxygen.
To protect the algae, we should eliminate their predators.
So...we can chop down the rainforests to make nice coffee tables, but only if we kill the whales.

:p

GREY POWER!

Whats even more amazing was the ammount of posts required to make the change from power savings to green vs grey. woooo!

Yes froogy cut his energy bill, cool.  Now, when is he inviting us over for a swim?

We almost had nuclear energy but then there were like three or four incidents when they were first getting started and now it's all fossil fuel again.

I want nuclear power plants.

Or microwave power plants like in Sim City so I can 'accidentally' point the beam at someone.

I like those ideas. With proper solar panels you could maybe generate enough power to be self sufficient and even 'sell' some back to the power consortium. :)

I live in Kansas, I think our big thing here is wind energy, I guess we have a shit ton of wind around these parts.  Now, I just need to find a way to convert my car to wind power...

YES!

Miss those. I think they went away by simcity 3000. :-(

of course, all they are is giant epic solar power arrays in space... what you built in sc2k was just the receiver.

"I like those ideas. With proper solar panels you could maybe generate enough power to be self sufficient and even 'sell' some back to the power consortium."

The sytems we have in Oz do just that.

Even the planning act re heritage overlays is being amended so 'appearance' issues that arise where people will be 'defacing' the streetscape because the only roof orientation to North is on their frontage will be allowed.

'quaint' Victorian Architecture with ugly solar panels on the roof.... makes a mockery of 'heritage'....;p

Might be one for the materials engineers in the longer run. Photovoltaic paint and that sort of thing.

Must be nice to live somewhere with an architectural tradition to preserve (or mourn passing). I'm Floridian. Even though we have neat things like a few cracker houses still around from the old days and some half-decent modernism from the Sarasota School, it's mostly McUgly sprawl and 'town centers' that fell off a few trucks.

Isn't that the truth!   However, you know what we DON'T have right now....houses buried in snow. (I'm originally from Wisconsin).

I'm currently North of Wisconsin ... we tried to send the snow down to you guys the other day ... we almost got you too!!! Sneaky rascals you are. X(

Now there's an idea...photo-voltaic paint....zinc-alume colour .... or at worst red-oxide ... or both.

One hurdle.... zinc galvanizing mixed with lead exhaust emissions [not to mention lead flashing] .... add a bit of water...and you have a battery...er....serious corrosion problems....;p
