PC Mag’s 15 “Must Have” Utilities

PC Mag’s 15 “Must Have” Utilities

Fifteen incredible and free utilities for your computer. Registry, startup, audio editors and more!  Only one is "pay", I believe.

Granted, this list is from March, 2010 however, these utilities are incredible and I’ll be on the lookout for the 2011 list for you when it comes out.

The “must have 15”:

ArsClip 3.1.3

Audacity 1.2

Autoruns 9

DualBootPRO 1.0.0

ImgBurn 2.5

Iometer

KeyText 3.13

Meraki WiFi Stumbler

NetSurveyor Professional

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite

Process Explorer 11

Process Monitor 2.8

Registry Workshop

VLC media player 1.0.5

Wireshark 1.2.6

Hello all,

Thanks for the great utilities.

Does anyone know of a fast and comprehensive substitute/alternative for Windows 7-64bit Indexing? I don't like how indexing excludes parts of the hard drive and the sluggish rebuilding of fequently accseced directories.

Wonderful search engine, always finds whatever I throw at it, free and safe!<3

Doc, this should be a periodic article!  While the PC Mag list is a bit long in the tooth (several are many revisions past the article's listing), the best part about it is what others bring to the table!  I have just added some great utilities to my tool chest.

for my own contribution, while I think the Meraki Wifi Stumbler is neat (especially not having to load anything), my favorite Wifi sniffer is InSSIDer

Given the lateness of my post, I will wait to see if any others post some of my other favorites, although most have been posted by others.

Good suggestion, Dr Guy. For the most part lots of constructive ideas, which is the goal. :)

Defraggler is a disk defragmenter by the ccleaner people.  Can't say if it's the best or not, but it's a major improvement over Windows defrag and supports all versions of Windows.

It's one that many folks like, lbgsloan. It's a good suggestion. Thanks. Smart Defrag is another good one.

I put this up on another thread...........

If you are looking for a good free utilities program for XP.........Which is usually paid for............Here you go..........

Quote

Here's another big tip to help your XP machine run quicker........Don't go fiddling around trying to find different programs to make your XP machine quicker and leaner.........Use, most probably, the most popular and very respected 'paid for' Utilities package around...........FOR FREE. Grab TuneUp Utilities..........2008 version for free. Yes, FREE.......it appears legit and there are no time bombs nor is it a partially disabled version.......The 'full monty'..............I'd run a virus scan on the downloaded file as a precaution but it appears legit and my guess is TuneUp have allowed this hoping that people will like it so much that they'll eventually upgrade and pay for the 2011. The 2008 version is just great for XP and is a work horse and will really keep your XP machine moving..........Grab it here  http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/04/23/free-tuneup-utilities-2008-download-with-registration-serial-number/

If your software config allows, I'd suggest AVG LinkScanner....it's proactive rather than reactive. You can read about it here -  http://tinyurl.com/4bjcd2b

WOT puts a small green ring next to the url pane. It lets you rate each website you visit. Wincustomize has an excellent rating.

Clipcube

Clipboard history tool ...

WinDirStat is a very good utility. I prefer Ashampoo Snap 3, Jing and The one I use most often is Snagit 10. All three are free.

clipcube is interesting, but theres better one.

http://www.nakka.com/soft/clcl/index_eng.html

It saves last n (configurable # of entries) that was copied into clipboard. Many data formats is supported. You can also create permanent entries out any of supported formats too.

Yes, it's old. It still works on 64 bit windows 7. It's sad that its not being worked on anymore, but theres hardly anything to be added anyway.

I use to have Windirtat. But looking at a bunch of squares and rectangles of all different colors, especially the tiny ones, nah. I prefer to have text to go along with it.  Diskspacefan is good. I don't remember if it was mentioned in this thread but in case it was not. Basically it gives you a circular image of your drive and lists all the categories in different colors. Almost 3D like.

Yep...I remember posting that one...and it's very good.
