(Suggestion) Sovereign Starting with a Spell

I think it would be a great idea for the Sovereign to start with a spell. I don't know what level would be right for balance, but maybe a level 3 or less spell. That would give each individual sovereign another layer of character.

I do not know if anyone else suggested this idea, but I think it would be great.

I happen to agree with you.   Feel free to post your ideas to the thread linked above.   I am making a mod that gives starting spells to Sovereigns.

Sweet Murteas!  One way to do this would be to have the Beacon Of Hope (or Empire Equivalent) grant 25 Arcane Research points upon completion (thus earning you a spell), i.e. enough points to grant you a spell.  Not sure how this applies to Epic, though...

I'm sure you have another implementation in mind, though.  Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I would also make it Master of Magic like, where the higher the intelligence you choose at the start, the higher level spell you CAN pick (you could still pick a lower level spell). Good idea guys, because right now if you choose a completely spell-casting sovereign, you're worthless at the start of the game for quite a while.

Currently I've been just giving out low level spells in the life / death/ and combat spell books, but I like the idea of having a sovereign decide what his starting spell should be.   I think it could be possible just like you suggested (give 25 arcane when city is founded for example).

I look into this, as well as adding more variety in spells.

Excellent idea.

I get the possibility that their may be a period before you've mastered your abilities where you can't really do much magic but how it plays out in the mechanics is to either force you to keep your sov away from danger until you get some spells going or use weaponry, which then pushes you to investing your first few levels worth of points into combat stats rather than intellect.

Either way the balance seems completely skewed towards gear and technology over magic at the start.

I really like the idea of having a higher level spell the higher your starting intelligence is. The payoff for higher strength and dexterity gives a decent advantage early game. I would like to see the same advantages applied to mages. Even if a sovereign start off with high level spell, the fact that the global mana pool takes time to generate would prevent the spamming of high level spells and preserve some balance. Also the whole reason people are flocking to your kingdom/empire is because you can channel the elements! Not because your good with a staff!
