Chuck Tales

1.09s AAR of shorts

Chuck Tales

From the Producers of [AAR... RGH?]I wanted my first game to be epic and... and "Oh hai! I'm Lady Irane of Tarth", the new superproduction: Chuck Tales.

Based on a powerful hero leading a bunch of people who distrust magic and that loves to kick ass, these are the tales of Chuck of Mundania, powerful warrior like no one else.

Heroic battles, noble sacrifices, tragic mistakes, bitter revenges, exotic women and more bandits that you can count!

Of Chuck Tales

Finished game of 1.09s beta version. Conditions of the game:

  • Magic is forbidden in all its forms. Must avoid researching it, using magical objects and all that stuff.
  • Adventure and Diplomacy only enough to spawn resources if needed and get some trade and treaties options if the situation asks for them. Basic default quests can be done and possible equipment from them is useable (like Sword of the Sovereign).
  • Focus must be Civics and Warfare. As much Warfare as the situation allows (can be supported and there are no other needs to cover).
  • There is no victory condition determined for this faction (obviously, Spell of Making and Master Quest are out) but Conquest is prefered (by Chuck).

It's a finished game and I'll update this (here or new posts linked from here) from time to time. Almost 300 MB of pics to remember all the battles, mistakes and bandits. :P

Of Falkanina

Of the Kingdom of Mundania

Not much is known of the people of Mundania before the Cataclysm. What it's known is that after the Cataclysm they became brave warriors ready to defend that what was theirs and do whatever was needed to provide for their people. But they also had a deep feeling of fear to all things related to magic, as it had been the bringer of ruin to Falkanina and all its people.

After the Cataclysm, Mundanians had wandered the wastelands in small warring tribes, sometimes settling for a short time in small camps. Life was difficult but they faced the challenges with bravery and some obstinacy. And they valued knowledge that they could find or that other people could offer them, as it was the means to improve their living conditions.

Of Chuck

Little is known about Chuck. Some legends say that he just appeared from thin air, a mighty warrior like no one has seen before. Others say how he was a simple troublesome boy from one of the Mundanian tribes that one day decided that he wanted to rule at any cost.

The only known facts about Chuck were that he was such an exceptional warrior, that he hadn't had the time to cultivate other aspects of his persona. So he was a bit... mentally challenged. Chuck usually had some trouble dealing with matters not related to smashing heads and degutting bandits but in anything related to combat, no one could match him. And he also had managed to accumulate some wealth working as mercenary in foreign lands during an undetermined period of time.

Of how Chuck became the leader of the Mundanians

It is not quite clear how it became to be. But most scholars agree that it happened more or less like this:

  • Chuck: I'm going to lead you all and make us strong!
  • Tribe Leader: You? You are a no one here. I am the one with the power here!
  • Chuck: How you dare question me? Chuck smash!!!!
  • Chuck: *SMASH*
  • Tribe Leader: *dies*
  • Chuck: Now I lead.
  • Tribe: *nod*

Of those who opposed Chuck

Mundanians were not alone in Falkanina. Others had also survived and organized themselves. In time, they would meet the Mundanians and the might of Chuck.

Of the Foundation of the Kingdom of Mundania

Spring 159 A.C.

The mighty Chuck chooses the place where his founding city, Chuck City, is to be built and the foundations of his Mundania Kingdom are to be set. It's a happy day for all the presents and soon they are set to spread the good news.

"Why here? Why not? Food nearby and some nice countryside." - Chuck, of the foundation of Chuck City and the Kingdom of Mundania.

Chuck meets Yoje, who offers his services as experienced researcher. Once Chuck understands how important is that to develop new weapons and armours, Yoje is hired to serve Chuck and the Kingdom of Mundania.

Summer 159 A.C.

A man presenting himself as Janusk the Scribe, arrives to the sorroundings of Chuck City and offers his services. Although the mighty Chuck doesn't know what a scribe is, he perfectly knows what a merchant is and the benefits of having one. Janusk is hired to serve Chuck and the Kingdom of Mundania.

Although Chuck is mighty, he hasn't weapons and visits the local shop to get a staff to more efficiently deal with his enemies. After some convincing by Janusk, Chuck doesn't smash the shoopkeer and pays for the staff. Janusk gets a staff too.

Winter 159 A.C.

Mundanians, under Yoje's supervision, have finally constructed a study and can finally start an organized labor of knowledge recovery. Despite Chuck's wishes for Warfare, Yoje and Janusk convice the mighty leader of the benefit of starting with some Civilization that would allow his people to exploit natural resources and offer better living conditions to the mundanians.

Winter 160 A.C.

Chuck City keeps growing while Chuck and his trusty companions explore the sorrounding area for lost treasures and resources.

In order to protect the growing city, Chuck orders the training of people as soldiers. As the mighty leader of the Kingdom of Mundania, he decides that those first defenders are to be "women with a stick". And so is done.

"If you think about it, what can be more ashaming than to be beaten by a woman with a stick?" - Chuck, of winning battles and ashaming the enemy.

Of the Kingdom of Gilden and securing Mundania's interests

Spring 161 A.C.

As the fabled Chuck and his companions Yoje and Janusk travel the world in search of anything useful for the Kingdom, they meet Markinn, who declares himself as the King of Gilden.

"Why does he has an axe and I'm stuck with a staff?" - Chuck, of King Markinn of Gilden.

Both parties leave in good terms but Chuck is worried because meeting Markinn so close to Chuck City means that Gilden must be located nearby and thereby be a possible threat. Chuck takes as his personal quest to localte Gilden lands and evaluate the possible threat.

Spring 162 A.C.

While traveling in Mundania territory, Bannon Highsley (known by scholars as paladin of industry, waging war against idle lands) is hired to help in Chuck City. His hiring leaves the Kingdom's coffers almost empty.

Winter 162 A.C.

While Chuck and his companions search for Gilden, Chuck City is under the defense of a Woman with a Stick and Bannon Highsley. More Women with a Stick are already getting their training as soldiers. Orders are received of start training too a Pioneer as Chuck City is developing nicely and can support a sister. The possible threat of Gilden also makes it interesting not to delay the matter too much.

Spring 163 A.C.

The intrepid Chuck finally finds Gilden and what he sees troubles him.

Gilden's capital is not too far away of east Chuck City. That means competition for nearby resources and all the usual disputes of so close neighbours. In that moment only Markinn's wife, Laniri, is defending the capital. And she only has her fists to defend it. Yoje and Janusk advice against war and remind Chuck of the benefits that commerce and treaties can have with Gilden. Chuck ignores the arguments and thinks only of the security of his people and the benefits of having another city with access to fertile land.

Chuck declares war on Gilden in the name of Mundania and, in what Janusk would declare as a gangbang, attacks Markinn's wife with the help of Yoje and Janusk. Laniri fights with honor but Chuck simply beats her with his staff until she is dead. Urlusuen, capital of Gilden, falls into Mundanian's hands.

Of the Kingdom of Altar and war casualties

Summer 163 A.C.

With Urlusuen conquest still fresh, Chuck receives news not to his liking. Apparently, there is a Pioneer of a Kingdom known as Altar that is to the north of the new Mundanian city. Chuck knows what that means: Altar cannot be too far from there.

Fall 163 A.C.

But before he can deal with the new menace, he is told that they can start learning spells. Chuck doesn't like the sound of that as he has banned magic from his dominion. He refuses to learn any spells and for the time being, leaves them to simply research spell levels so he han focus on the Altar topic.

Good news come from the capital as mundanians have rediscovered the secrets of harvesting. As Urlusuen has an iron deposit nearby, it's great news for the Kingdom. Chuck quickly orders to focus on warfare to improve the Kingdom's offensive capabilities.

"Hah! He is still using a club!" - Chuck, of King Relias of Altar.

After some talk with Relias, King of Altar, Chuck decides that although the war with Gilden is still unifished and with Markinn missing, mundanians must go to war against Altar and stop them before they can become a menace for their security. And so the war against Altar begins.

Summer 164 A.C.

King Chuck and his companions discover Altar's capital, Ibrotaen, but despite all the information pointing at the advantage of Mundania, Chuck's party didn't have the strength to assault the capital where Relias, his wife and a champion were defending.

Advised by Yoje and Janusk, Chuck decides to retreat to Urlusuen and recruit some more troops to create a more solid offensive against Altar.

Spring 165 A.C.

Markinn sends a message asking for the end of the war. Chuck dismisses it as Markinn has no land to claim as his own and is weak.

Spring 166 A.C.

While taking a walk in Urlusuen, Chuck notices a strange building. It happens to be an arcane laboratory, which is the responsible for all those unwanted spell research. The mundanian lord orders its inmediate demolition.

Spies report how Relias' wife, Xanayi, has adquired somehow a spear, increasing Ibrotaen's defense.

Fall 166 A.C.

Researches give Chuck great news when they inform the King that they have rediscovered the old techniques to create new equipment for the troops. Chuck congratulates the researchers and asks them to keep researching warfare stuff.

But before the mighty Chuck can go to the shop to see the new equipment options he receives bad news from the capital: Markinn has founded a new city, Rirbiri, to the north of Chuck City.

"Sometimes you need a break from beating your enemy. For those moments, you need a good armour." - Chuck, of the importance of armours.

With all that information in his advisors' minds, he buys some armour for himself and for his good friend Janusk. The coffers don't allow much more. All for the incoming battle against Relias. He also orders that it is necessary to produce a new type of soldier that can use the new equipment. Someone like a woman with spear. And so is done.

"Now we are talking serious business." - Chuck, of the benefits of giving women better equipment.

By then any plans of using Pioneers to expand have been scrapped and more Women with Sticks have been trained and sent to Urlusuen. Although Women with Spear are to be the next wave in mundania military might, Chuck is not to risk much longer that Altaria can develop a serious military.

Spring 169 A.C.

Chuck feels confident with the current situation and the recent advances of his Kingdom. His army of Women with a Stick, plus a Woman with Spear that had been trained in Urlusuen, approach the altarian border and gets ready for more battles.

Summer 169 A.C.

The next wave against Altar begins in what Chuck plans to be also the final one. Chuck leads his army against some altarian pioneers that were trying to cross the frontier.

Fall 169 A.C.

As the Gilden city of Rirbiri remains undefended, Chuck decides that the troops from Chuck City must take it before Markinn is back or defenders are trained in Rirbiri. The mighty Chuck won't allow the chance to control that threat to go by.

Winter 169 A.C.

While a couple of Women with a Stick camp next to Rirbiri to assault the still undefended city during the next season, Chuck finally reaches Ibrotaen and enters battle with Relias' army. The difference isn't as big as Chuck wants but he has the edge in it and hopes to have the Women with a Stick to soak most of the altarian offensive power.

The mundanians let the altarians approach and when in range they attack the defenders viciously. Queen Xanayi falls to the attacks of the Woman with Spear and the mundanian army celebrates. But they celebrate too soon as some moments later the altarian champion Muvueratha kills Janusk in duel.

Chuck is enraged by the death of his friend. He takes down Muvueratha and tries to do the same with Relias. The wounded Sovereign doesn't have the intention to die though and tries to scape from the battlefield. He is intercepted by the Woman with Spear and mortally wounded but before she has the opportunity to kill him, he uses strange magics to disappear from the battlefield. Chuck swears that he won't rest until Janusk is avenged and the coward Relias dead. Yoje tries to remind Chuck that in battles usually people dies on both sides and that the war was started by him, but to no avail.

Of bitter revenge and tragic doom

Spring 170 A.C.

Rirbiri falls to mundania's might. King Markinn is nearby to the north, alone but a bit more powerful than the two women with a stick in Rirbiri, and there is the presence of a bear, the first wild life seen until now by mundanians since Chuck founded the Kingdom. Bannon Highsley receives orders from Chuck to arm himself and move to Rirbiri to support the troops against Markinn. The Champion arms himself with a spear and some armlets and departs quickly to the new mundanian city. Chuck City remains unguarded but there are more troops in training to reinforce it and no enemies nearby.

Ibrotae, old Altarian capital now under mundanian dominion, is renamed to Janusk Sacrifice by Chuck's orders. No one questions the decision or the name.

Summer 170 A.C.

Chuck mobilizes his army to attack Kimidibe to the north, very close to Janusk Sacrifice. The King's blood boils with the desire of vengeance.

Fall 170 A.C.

The moment to avenge Janusk arrives when Chuck leads his army against Relias of Altar. No one fights alongside the altarian Sovereign and Chuck takes care of him in personal duel. The altarian Sovereign is no match for the fabled Chuck, who smashes him to death with little effort. Janusk has been avenged and for the time being, mundanians can sleep in peace in that region of Falkanina.

To commemorate the moment, Chuck renames the city of Kimidibe to Janusk Revenge. Again, no one questions the decision or the name.

Winter 170 A.C.

Markinn begs for peace. The mighty Chuck denies the weakling of his wish. Now that Altar has been dealt with, Chuck can finally focus on ending the war with Gilden.

An urgent message from Dosid, an unaligned champion, reaches the mighty Chuck. In it, Dosid alerts Chuck of how Chuck City looks ripe for the taking. A quick check on the zone discovers that a bandit with a wolf companion has appeared to the southwest of Chuck City. The capital remains unguarded but with a Woman With a Stick ready for the next season and Bannon Highsley in a forest to the northwest of Chuck City. Bannon is ordered to retreat to Chuck City.

Spring 171 A.C.

The bandit and his wolf companion attack Chuck City. Bannon Highsley is still on route to the capital and only a newly trained Woman With a Stick is there to defend the city. She fights like a true mundanian against the invaders but she is finally beaten and the city is destroyed to the ground.

The news of the destruction of Chuck City spread quickly through the kingdom and fill the hearts of mundanians with grief and sadness. The King Chuck, in his way to Chuck City ahead of his army, receives the news of the tragedy with great sadness for the destruction of the city and the deaths of its citizens.

Chuck's Fury - depiction of King Chuck after receiving the news of Chuck City's destruction, by unknown local artist.

Chuck swears by the blood of his ancestors that the bandit and the wolf will pay with their lifes for such attrocity as well as any other of their kind that dares to cross his path. He commits himself to rebuild Chuck City anew and bring it back to its former glory as a show of mundanian strength and determination.

Chuck of Mundania once commented, "There are few problems in this world that cannot be solved by a swift roundhouse kick to the face. In fact, there are none."
