Some Love for Mages but more customization in general

Same old problem run around for seasons whacking things with weapons waiting to learn first combat spell.

What about on our first turn we start out we are offered one item/spell. Each with a back story like a family heirloom, found object etc etc

None of them game breaking as these items are old and have lesser stats than the first tech items you can research since they are free at start and require no upkeep or cost unlike spells.

1.Breastplate

2.Helm

3.Boots

4.Cape

etc etc

For Those who want a mage right out of the door how about a starter spell like these ones. Could be from an ancient spell book with only one readable spell left in it. You cast during each combat and fade when combat ends but i think they would have to do about the same damage or same defence as your first tech items since you have to pump out mana each combat to call them forth.

1.Phantom Knife +Attack

2.Phantom Shield +Defence

3.Mage Missile Bow +Minor Ranged attack

I like the idea of a family heirloom. I also think it could counter the (effective but uninteresting) strategy of buying the Warstaff when creating a Sovereign. It could also mean that the smarter monsters in 1.09o are less of a problem for people who are unprepared.

I concur with the second idea: the begining is too slow for mages because they're next to useless. A minor cantrip besides imbue champion (IC is useless on its own, so it doesn't make that much change to give it for free and nothing else) for each starting school of magic would be a nice idea.

Enchantment could have a small "+ 2 attack for 3 rounds" spell, for instance.

There are no mages, only channelers (Sovereigns included) more oriented to cast spells than others. But all of them end using the heaviest armour and most powerful weapon that the money can buy. :annoyed:

Certainly. |-)

This stuff seems like it would be a good use of the Equipment section on the sovereign creation menu.
