[Rant] Earliest uninstall ever.

I really wanted to like Elemental, and at first I actually did--the level of customization is pretty impressive, the lore seems interesting from what little I can glean of it, and the graphics give it its own style. But I just bought it two days ago, and I've already uninstalled it. This is, as the title suggests, the shortest time I've ever given a game before giving up on it. For posterity, and in the hopes that maybe the problems will one day get fixed so my forty dollars won't have been completely blown, I'd like to tell you why.

There are numerous little touches that are either done poorly or missing, for one thing. I've already covered some of them over in the "Ideas" forum, but I've uncovered at least as many more since that post, so I'll just summarize a few of the more glaring ones: factions shouldn't need to pay for the option to have female units, I should be able to customize individual unit colors during the design process, I should be able to replace or retire the peasant class if I darn well feel like it thank you, I would like the ability to recruit creatures in the same way I recruit champions (as it stands, champions are pretty dull), mounts and non-human units should have customization options as well, and most importantly there should be the option to play against the factions you come up with. Seriously, the others I can basically get over, but the lack of that last one is just downright inexcusable.

But most of that I could have forgiven, I guess. I could have waited for patches, or third-party modifications and such. What actually got me to quit were the bugs. Oh god the bugs. Why oh why is my faction history erased when I scroll through the flag selection? Why does the turn randomly refuse to end until I manually skip every unit's turn? Why does my newly-minted Sovereign not show up in the roster of available Channelers until I restart the game? But it wasn't an in-game bug that killed it for me, though--it was an out-of-game bug. See, I figured I'd try out the hardware mouse option, since I've heard that games eat up less memory that way. Seemed to be working great--until I finished Sovereign and Faction creation and actually started the game. Then I couldn't select units, and when I tried to turn the hardware option off my cursor vanished completely and I had to shut down the game without saving because I couldn't navigate the menu anymore.

That's not the kicker, though; the best part is the reason that I call it an out-of-game bug. It actually screwed up how my mouse functioned outside the game. My scroll wheel started working like a set of navigation buttons in Firefox, clicking on icons in Windows randomly selected multiple icons, and I couldn't restart through the Start Menu; I had to do it through the task manager instead. That cleared the problem up, but yeah: I uninstalled Elemental before I rebooted, and I don't plan on reinstalling it any time soon.

Overall, I'm completely disappointed and disenchanted with my purchase. Up until everything went horribly wrong, I liked (most of) the game, and I was even working on a couple of ideas for the spell design contest. As it stands, though, I don't see much of a point in coming up with new content until the old content is actually working the way it should. I expected a lot more from the Galactic Civilizations crowd. I'm sorry if I sound bitter, but I guess I am a little bitter.

In all sincerity, though, I wish the developers the best of luck in fixing this game and I hope everyone else has fun with it in the meantime.

Adieu!

Time Blossom

That's fair.

Give it another try in 4 months time.

The out of game bugs are killing me too.  Shortly after I installed Elemental, my toaster stopped working.  Freakin Elemental!

lol

actually quite surprised there are no complaints about game mechanics, ai or pacing though. i always thought that the main downer would simply be that the game just isn't really entertaining until you get about 30 techs in and have a level 3 city.

you can play against the ai you built. if you use them as soon as you create them rather than exiting game. it's a bug

Unfortunately I would have to agree with being disenchanted with the purchase.  I am holding on to hope that 1.1 and the expansions are going to fix the issues I have with the game.

Unfortunately, I have the completely opposite opinion.  I think the games are fun to start.  However, I noticed I didn't finish a lot of games because the mechanics of the game only really allow one way to play, which was to spam as many cities as you can.  Since I find that terribly boring, I kept ending games and starting over.

My fastest uninstall for a game was with Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.  Doing so as fast as I did ended up being a mistake, because if you uninstalled without first downloading a patch it actually deleted important system files, forcing you to reinstall Windows.

If you want to talk about out-of-game bugs I think that pretty much takes the cake.

Everything is relative.

Give it another try in 24 months time.

You had a typo.

Haha, so true.  We have kept saying, wait a few months, and a few months have passed, and we say wait a few more months.  How long does it take to polish a turd?  I'm joking, I don't think the game is a turd, but it does need a lot of work.

I had the same problem.  But it was with Amnesia.  Which also runs through impulse.   Playing Amnesia, I paused and went for a cup of coffee, when I rerurned I was on the desktop and clicking any icon on the desktop would just create another one. I had about 15 Amnesia icons stacked on top of each other.  AAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Lost for hours, as a last resort I started Amnesia and then quit the game correctly and PRESTO..........all was back to normal again.  That was several weeks ago and I haven't had it since.  Go figure.......

Kael just got here. I think he'll need 6 months at least to make his full impact felt.

Wow. Well done TimeBlossom and well done everyone who has posted so far. I don't remember anyone else starting a complaint thread that went this amicably. Usually it turns into Hella Mental: War of Spastics, and everyone jumps on the OP and tries to anally rape them with a rusted iron dildo. Then the lurking haters chime in and try to squeeze fanboys by the testicles with their stainless steel garlic crushers (which they still use afterwards for crushing garlic). Finally, a moderator looks in, soaks their pants in urine and nearly splits their spleens from laughing at us, and either locks or removes the thread.

But yeah, give the devs some more time. They'll turn the game around, and then use all of this as preparation for Elemental II.

God your such a fanboy... who do you think you are coming here with your patience and sense of community spirit.... RAGGGHHHH

That's probably because he posted actual complaints instead of "OMGQWTFBBQSAUCE! THIS GAME IS SHIT! BURN IN HELL STARDOCK!!!11111  "

"I hate this steaming pile of crap and I uninstalled it" just doesn't cut the mustard.  He gave actual explanations and skipped the utterly unproductive and pointless "Stardock sucks" rants we've been seeing.  He was also polite about it, but you can probably guess that I don't personally care about that part myself.

The mouse issue is a stuck key send.  It's more an eventuality than a problem specific to Elemental in all likelihood.  You have a key depressed, say shift, at a point where inputs get messed up in a transition somewhere and it blows it to hell until you resend.  Shift and alt are quite the devastating individuals in particular.

The probability of that happening increases exponentially to the intentions of the OP of trying to anally rape readers with a rusted iron dildo. :P

A rusted iron dildo?.... wait where would you even get one of those?  I mean, not that I would want one, but it I did, and remember I don't, but if I did where would I even find such a thing?  Keep in mind that I don't want one, but if I did it wouldn't be for use it would be.... um... as a gag gift..

Beds, Baths, and Beyond Beyond.

It's in the section beyond that which is Beyond Beyond. The secret Beyond. (say Beyond again - "Beyond").
