Hi guys, I'm trying to think of ways that an empire can truly overextend itself.
One of my ideas was that no matter what, a player would have to leave part of their forces at a planet or the planet becomes too afraid of its danger and will split away from the empire. My basic idea was that planets deep within your territory would only require a small picket, say five frigates, while a border world would need more like fifteen, or a capital ship. This way, a smaller empire would have less planets to picket and be more competitive than a fast-expanding empire. In addition, this would prevent the single massive fleet that seems to be the only real tactic in multiplayer.
I was also thinking that say a terran planet would require a larger picket, while an asteroid might only require a single frigate.
On a side note, I was also considering that if a planet was besieged by a hostile force, their loyalty would go down as long as the force was the only force in the gravity well, and when the loyalty got to zero, they planet would SURRENDER (Not suicide) and become part of the enemy empire. Siege frigates would greatly decrease loyalty by bombing the planet. Starbases would be treated as part of the defending empire's forces, and would prevent their loyalty from going down.
Any thought guys? This is all speculation at the moment, and would require massive modding to implement. I'm just wondering if there are any glaring feedbacks, and if the rest of the community would like these ideas.
