Taylor...
If you are using Win98, then things aren't all that difficult.
LiteSTEP only needs to be pointed to in your system.ini file in the [boot] section, the line reading....
shell=explorer.exe
needs to be...
shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe

That's it, providing you have installed Litestep in that path.

IMPORTANT******IMPORTANT

ONLY attempt to play with shell replacements if you know how to boot into dos at start-up and edit your system.ini from there if all goes weird.
If not, get back to us here...and we can help you some more.
The first rule of Shells and LiteSTEP in particular is RTFM.

I have been using LiteSTEP continuously since 1997, and am still RTFMing...

come on, Jafo, give him some help links, where he can find some beginner's info. I just started stepping some time ago, and you gave me some helpful links back then. So I know you have them - I'd give them to him myself but I can't remember where I put them...

And, Taylor: listen to Jafo

http:\\www.ls2k.org
or
http:\\www.shellfront.org
or two of the best sites to check. Shellfront in particular has several good tutorials on installing, upgrading. etc.

So I guess a few others are going through litestep.net withdrawals of their own Misery loves company! Now I have to get my fix by visiting themes.org...

It would probably be easiest to look into using a shell manager - that way you could simply reboot and select Windows Explorer next time if something went wrong with your previous choice. What OS are you on?

Taylor...
In win98...hold down the F8 key as your comp boots.
You should get to the start menu for Safe mode, etc.
Choose command prompt only.
Type 'edit c:\windows\system.ini' [without quotes]
press
Find the [boot] section of system.ini
shell= line should read...
shell=explorer.exe
for Normal Windows explorer....
or
shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe
for normal installs of LiteSTEP.

Edit to suit.
Save
Reboot....

Damn...the 'press' line lost the 'enter'
Must remember not to use those arrow keys...

And don't worry Taylor, as you can see by the problems the 'Step masters have with just typing, LiteStep misn't all that hard if they'd got it up and running (just remember how to edit you system.ini from DOS and you're home free).

okay im on windows ME. i can do that F8 to get into my bios, but i dont see anywhere where it says Command promt only. So i still dont know how to get into dos right at boot up, i do know how to edit the shell though.

Ah....I'll have to get out of 2K and boot into my ME drive, disable LiteSPAWN, my shell loader, and work through it myself to be sure of giving you the correct info.

But firstly, it's not the bios you want to get into, but the OS, without loading a shell....ie...Dos....Now, ME works differently to 98 or 95, so I better check twice, to be sure, to be sure...

I'll be Bach....

Taylor...to get past the OS shell in ME, you will need a Boot disk....so boot from the floppy and re-start...you won't need CD-Rom support [one of the options you will be given]...and at the c:\ prompt...you can access your system.ini file and edit the shell= line....

What you type...
edit c:\windows\system.ini [enter]

change in the [boot] section....

shell=explorer.exe
to
shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe

save the changes...
pull out the floppy...
reboot.

Dun....

Yes....that should, I think....give it a go, although you can make a floppy.....it's an option in ME...
