Free Give Away of the Day Gone?

http://www.giveawayoftheday.

It would appear that Free Give Away of the Day's domain name has expired....I don't think my browser was hijacked.

A shame, as it was a great site to pick up freeware. I hope they repurchase the domain.

They should have let it die. After my latest experience with on of their giveaways I'll never get another thing from there.

Most,,,,,,some are just trials.  I can get that anywhere. :S And all the same stuff.....

I guess I must have caught it before they got it up and running again....Glad they did.

Phoon's experience reminds me of the old saying 'There is not such thing as a Free Lunch'.

Yes I know we are not talking about lunch here but I think you get the drift.  Lots of software folks will give out free copies of thier software in hopes you will upgrade to the next version new version of it, which just happens is ready for release.  More than likely you will have to put up with a 'Nag Screen' asking you to update.

Of course I never gone after free stuff, yeah, right.  :-"

Just sign up for their mailing list. I delete most of them but I have found a couple of interesting programs.  B)

Pardon me for stating the obvious, but what did you expect? Businesses are made of people, and people need to make money to pay their bills and keep on funding development of the stuff they do. Everyone does.

So, free offers of commercial software only happen for two reasons: the one you stated (the hope that users will upgrade to the next version and pay for it) and/or increase exposure of the software. This should be pretty obvious, as it is only common sense, and, besides, it is also made pretty clear on the GOTD site if you read their Terms of Service. Not like it's hidden information. |-)

As I discovered, as a software developer, the problem with GOTD type of promotions (opposed to Bits Du Jour, for instance, where the software is still sold, albeit at a heavy discount), is that it comes with a 'hidden' heavy price for the software developer as well:

First, the whole thing is a nest of software pirates circling GOTD like flies waiting for something new to crack. Second, some users fail to read the instructions (GOTD Terms of Service clearly states that their promotions offer NO re-installations and NO updates, and that you must read the included readme file, as applications promoted there, being from different software companies, are installed and registered differently) and, instead of owning up to their own mistake, blame and insult the developer for 'leading them on'. And this even when you offer them a heavy discount - when you have no obligation to do so - to become a 'legit' user of software they actually like enough to have been using every day for the past two months.

It's agravating, to say the least. ;P

It's back up! :) I think the people who download from this site realize there are no reuploads or support, updates. It's just fun to see what they're giving away next. I haven't download much from there, but it's still like Christmas just to see what's next! :')

It was never down. If you'll try Doc's links, they are bad. They read correctly, but if you right click the one in the OP, choose copy shortcut, this is what you get. I copied it and pasted into notepad.

Got this.

http://www.giveawayoftheday./   Takes me here.

I'm still not seeing it....every link I click takes me to some default page. *_*

If you look at what Doc posted and what Frankief posted there is only one slight difference, the '/'.  :-"

Sorry, Jim. Used Frakie's link with the '/' and this is what I got. Earlier it went up again. Now it's back! Weird!

Thats the same page I get regardless of what link I click.

Well something is wierd, I just used the link as shown with the '/' and got to the site.  I'm using IE 8.

DNS (Domain Name System) information usually takes 24/48 hours to replicate across the whole Internet. Depending on how current your ISP's DNS servers are (the computers who translate a domain name such as giveawayoftheday.com to an IP address), you might see one thing or the other.

Giveawayoftheday's server itself might still be online (and probably is) with its unique IP address, but the domain name www.giveawayoftheday.com, if they forgot to renew it on time or gave up on it, is not pointing to that IP address anymore.

JC..  Just for the record, Winstep is a golden piece of software that has made my system experience a much more pleasant one. In no way was I putting down your software or the other good ones.

The POS that I grabbed a few days ago is called Garbage Cleaner. Don't know why I tried it as CCleaner is the top dog. But I digress.

This software screwed my system up in a very odd fashion. I had 2 apps that failed to connect to the internet. A) Impulse and B) Curse Client. (the WoW fans will recognize that one).

GotD should at least test what they put up. Having failed to do so and thereby failing to look after the well being of their customer has put them in a quite less than favorable position in my eyes.

OK, I mis spoke. They may have let it expire, but the site is up now and Doc's link is still bad. If you'll right click it, choose copy shortcut, then paste into a word processor you'll see it's a bad link. Or just click it. It still takes you to a generic/default error site, not to Giveaway of the Day.

Not the external link in the title, but the one in the body of the OP.

Thanks, it's good to know that. Unfortunately a handful of GOTD users, however, do not share your opinion and are apparently convinced Winstep was trying to scam them in some away. One of them went as far as calling me an 'arrogant SOB' (sic) for politely pointing out that not reading the install instructions was his own mistake. One has to have a though skin on this business.

On the other hand, countless many others were 'converted' to the good cause, and they're pretty happy with it. Can't win them all, I supose.:)

Well, GOTD acts more like a 'portal' than anything else. Besides, all Registry cleaners, even CCleaner, are dangerous tools to use.

OK, at 8:45 pm I was there, site was up. That is when I posted the above post. It isn't up now. Unless someone slipped me acid, it was up at 8:44 pm EST.

Looks like it is down and the domain has expired.  Apart from following Frankie's link, I did a search and entered the GOTD result and it gives a 'domain expires' notice.
