WindowFX 4 Beta Has Arrived!

The long awaited beta for WindowFX 4 has arrived today, and users with an active Object Desktop subscription can download the beta via Impulse.  This is a completely new app with a new direction from what you might have experienced with previous versions.

The beta includes:

  • Custom animations for window open/close/minimize/restore
  • Enhanced window resizing options when dragging to screen edges
  • Eliminate distractions by drawing attention to the foreground window
  • Enable window momentum when moving windows
  • Window Flick mouse actions to customize window movement, maximizing, and monitor location
  • Allow Flash videos to run full-screen on one monitor (on a multi-monitor system)
  • Semi-transparent windows when inactive or moving a window
  • Keep a clean desktop by automatically minimizing inactive windows after a configurable period
  • Extend right-click window menus with additional features including custom maximized window sizes and always-on-top visibility settings

We will be talking a lot more about the features soon, so keep an eye out for those articles.  It’s not too late to get your Object Desktop subscription and check out not only WindowFX 4, but full versions of our other desktop enhancement apps like WindowBlinds, IconPackager, DeskScapes, and more!

The "flick" options screen could be a little cleaner, instead of saying "to the left" at the end of each option, could each dropdown be titled "Left" "Right" etc?

I was just missing a portion of my brain.  Problem solved.

Same - I was just missing part of my brain as above.  Sorry 'bout that.

Here's an issue I'm seeing. On a laptop, set to sleep when closing the lid, it fails to wake up when WFX4 is enabled (no issue when not enabled). The effects work fine while the computer is active, but when I close the lid (and put it to sleep), it does nothing when the lid is opened (have to reboot to get the system to work again). Just a possible issue :)

W7 64 - getting issues on shutdown with windows coming up with a message about closing explorer. It does it every time so FX is disabled for now.

Not seeing that on my Win 7 x64 rig. :)

Neil,

I could not reproduce my issue with Outlook 2010. I was on a different machine however so it may or may not be relavant information.

I reported the failure of Firefox to return from minimized state. Well, I also had this:

I was updating Windows Live 2011 and at one point it minimizes itself, it never returned so I moused over it and could see that it was waiting for me to make a choice, but I couldn't get it to restore so I could make that choice.

So there is definitely a problem with things returning from minimization. I killed WinFX, restarted the install, no problems.

RedneckDude I played with WinFX 4 just a little and didn't see much that I would want to use.  Before I disable it though I turned on the transparency and it seemed like everything disappeared, went back and turn it off and it all came back.  Did you turn on transparency and could that have been the problem? :S

Philly, no, and no.

But there is a conflict with windowblinds too.

I have windowblinds set to minimize windows to the systray on right click. OK, when I do this, then go to the systray to restore, the window stays minimized, but moves to the taskbar where it will not restore from minimized state.

Neil, I hope you know I'm not complaining, just reporting bugs.

Win 7 64, BTW.

Do you have minimize and restore animations on?

If you disable them does it then work ok?

Yes, I do.

If I disable the animations it works correctly. Minimizes to tray, restores as normal.

THIS and that's running Win7 Ultimate.

Okay, so is it possible that certain combinations of options within WindowFX 4 don't work well with each other? :S

I'm not getting any restore /minimize effects. Open windows collapse to the taskbar button and expand from there just as Windows already does without WFX running. No collapse, no fade, no swipe. Open/close animations work ok.

Edit: With inactive window transparency turned off the effects work.

it does that with some apps that are in system tray also,e.g utorrent, got it with photoshop also had to close it and re-open.

Also when a inactive windows fade and minimize(with auto minimize settings),when maximize it stays faded ,i hve to click on desktop then back on it

Mine as well. Win7x32 Professional. Disabling Winfx solves this.

Gotta say, this must be programmed extremely well- runs smooth as silk even in VMware with Aero enabled on my Mac!

Well I've not experienced any problems with WindowFX 4 so far, touch wood, but then I'm not using all the available features, just those I want.  I'm using the transparency feature for inactive windows and the fade-in, fade-out feature.  I'm using none of the minimise to tray or taskbar features as I'm happy witth how I have things set up for that.

:)

So far the only problem is the Photosop thing. Minimixed windows disapper, nowhere to be found. I can see the layer on the right but it's as if it's not really there. Windows 7 HP x64, ATI Radeon HD5750 but I AM liking some of the features very much. I still have to explore which settings are ok or not.

There is an issue with hidden windows. If you have an app which hides it's window and goes to the trayicon, upon reopening it doesn't show but the taskbar does show the button. Clicking on the button will show as if you show/hide the app, but it stays hidden. Disabling WinFX solves the problem.

Try Processlasso http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php for a test. It shows once and then is forever lost  <X3

PS

Sometimes Winfx loses track of which window to focus. If you have multiple windows open and you click  on a background one it doesn't come tot eh foreground but the original window goes to the background. Clicking again on the first window restores it.

Major problem with disappearing windows in several programs and Firefox.

Firefox, Photoshop, Apophysis -several lost renders, had to start all over, BSOD 2x, all when manipulating windows or minimizing. The bad parts FAR outweigh the good parts. For me this was not ready to be released. I am not impressed at all so far.  All I see is disable this and disable that as advice, here in this thread. It's like disabling Windows Blin ds for all programs and apps. What are you left with, not much.

Windows 7 x64, ATI HD5750

Still not tempted. Too many bugs and I need my machine in one piece.
