Event_Culture_1 'Demonstrations against cultural conquest'

Hiya, I started playing this awesome game a couple weeks ago and owe much to these forums and to the wiki. Thanks.

Does anyone have info on this event? What causes it, and does it ever end? I was close to my first influence victory the other day when this pops up- (copied from english.str)

Meanwhile...\n\nDemonstrations against the %s are growing across the galaxy. Accusations of 'cultural conquest' are being leveled at the %s. Merchants and shop keepers are being intimidated into only selling 'native' goods and services. The net result is that native cultural power has grown.

The fact that their accusations against me were true is beside the point. =P

Suddenly my influence drops from 67% alternating between 30% and 0%. My tourism income was shot etc etc. I went ahead and conquered the remaining civs with my military so that's fine but if this event can just come out of nowhere to shoot you in the butt then the influence strategy isn't what I'd call reliable.

Any thoughts?

The same thing has happened to me, and I resorted to war as well.  I guess it is part of the random events, but I don't know.  Still, it doesn't always happen since I did win the last two games through influence.  Sometime you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

It might be completely random, or be triggered by high influence. I've only ever seen it once, and I wasn't even trying for an influence victory (although I controlled 6 homeworlds by that point).

I find this is far more likely when using the Krynn.

If that's the case it's likely to happen more often when you've got high influence.
I say "likely" because I've had plenty of influence victories though I can't recall having seen that event.

My guess would be that this is the opposite of the random event "interest in foreign culture has grown" etc. and as such it should revert back to normal.
: how many weeks did you continue your game and did your influence ever return?
