What's coming in the expansion pack?

What's coming in the expansion pack?

Frogboy can't share what's coming in the expansion pack so I will take a crack at it...

There are certain things this game desperately needs many of which you can see just from reading the forums... Interestingly, SD has publicly committed to many of them, but has been mum on the others...hmmmmmmm.

Therefore, the expansion pack must contain:

1.  Improved hero/champion system.  There will be more heroes and they will have more interesting and upgradeable skills and attributes.  This will apply to the sovereigns as well.

2.  Lots more quests.  There will be more random quests and better quest tracking capabilities.

3.  More notable locations.  There will be lots more notable locations including dungeon crawls.

4.  Uncommon/Rare/Unique item drops.  You get the idea.

5.  Interactive landscape.  We'll see active volcanoes, forests that can be cut down and harvested, rain/snow, etc.

6.  More customizable troop options.  Yes, you'll finally get to create a gaggle of blond archers in pink dresses!

7.  Events.  You'll be able turn on/off or mod random events.

8.  Many UI improvements.  City screens, diplomacy overviews, interactive kingdom management dashboards, etc.

9.  Multi-player options.  Hotseat and PBEM.

10.  And finally ... BEAR FREAKIN CALVARY!!!

Any bets?

They've already stated this isn't happening.

I would love PBEM.  That's probably the only way I would do MP.

I really like Blistering Sands, Raise/Lower Land, Volcano, Flood and Earthquake - being able to change the environment is something that's pretty unique and awesome.

On the flipside, they have some bugs... like I can't cast blistering sands outside an area I control (no good for wiping out enemy resources?) and when I flood or volcano an opposing city, the AI doesn't realize I did it and/or doesn't care. Who doesn't declare war on you for sniping their city with a volcano?!

I have used the raise land spell once or twice, but it has problems. For some reason, even if I create a land corridor over a lake to to an island, there still seems to be a "desert cliff" otherwise open ground square that blocks overland access to & accross the new land corridor. So, I haven't been able to make use of that particular spell yet.

Oh, wait, those are from another game (which I was just playing!).  Yay DOSBox!

Those look very similar to the civilization (boardgame) cards. they get mixed in with the trade cards like ochre, salt.

That's because they ARE originally from the boardgame.  I've been playing the Advanced Civilization computer game from the '90s (not to be confused with Civilization) every so often for a while now.  It's nice to be able to play it whenever I want without having to get a group of people together to do so...

Be very careful with overuse of spells that "destroy" hexes or cities. The spells uses come with a morale hit to your units, that can cause the units (even heirs and heroes) to defect .

No shit?  that's awesome, I need to try that then.

The 3D map is terrible at showing which hills are actually mountains because some hill tiles can be higher than the nearby mountains.
Also, beach and submerged tiles look pretty much alike.

The cloth map (especially if modded) is very good at showing you exactly which inland tiles are movable.
Alas, it's not all better than the 3D map because it's abysmal at showing you which coastal tiles are movable or not and beach (harbours...) or not.

With raise land you always need the terrain ID window open to double check what terrain type the squares along your path are.
Even if the game theoretically shows the right tile, some mountains are multi-square gfx and turned off for all covered squares if you only alter the terrain of one. (save/load to work around)

i think what someone may be failing to mention is that the cliff tile is actually ocean and you need to raise the land there.

I have a lot of fond memories playing the Civ boardgame at UGA in the late 80s: 8 good buddies, a whole night, beer, pizza, backstabbing ... doesn't get much better than that!!

That game is a collector's item now, I've seen copies of it go for over $200 on eBay.

I'm very familiar with AH boardgames, I got most of them in my collection.

I was wondering about that, I tried casting lower land but it did nothing, didn't occur to me that raise land might work. It would be really nice if this stuff was covered in the manual like it should.

Yup raise land on the cliff square to complete land bridges.  I figured that out after getting really frustrated and deciding "oh well, what's the worst that can happen".
