Dread lords - Unexpected Visitor - Stuck on level 1 of the campaigns!

Whilst I'm new here, I'm by no means a novice in real life at 4x games, and have bought this game on a whim as it looks like it will be a great game once you've got the hang of it...

 

Now this ties in with my problem - 

Level 1 of the campaign "unexpected visitor" - has me stuck!

Two times now I've spent over an hour trying to work out how to build attacking vessels, only to be destroyed by the red enemy (boo) and a pea shooter of a weapon! I simply can't work out how to build attacking vessels.

My shipyard only has peaceful vessels to build, and it's frustrating me :(

 

I go and take the planets in teh middle of the screen (phobos I think), then I can't seem to do anything else.

 

Please help me, as it's really frustrating.

Hi!

In GC you have to research weapons in order to put then on your ships. At the start you simply don't have them available.

If further explanation is appreciated:

 You have to go down the galactic warfare/space militarism/whatever branch -- weapon techs are red. Unlike many other games, you don't start with a basic weapon in GCII. That's a bad thing and a good thing.

 Bad = obvious. Good = your colony vessels have a long period of safety from marauding enemies. Just try to beat the enemy (and to an extent, the allies) to the spot. I.e. colonize the FARTHEST planet you can get first, then fill the gaps between it and your homeworld.

 If you need a primer on ship design, click Shipyard, then New, select a hull, then fill it with thrusters, weapons, defenses, and gadgets. Then click Save, and enter a name and (optional) description. Now you can set your starport(s) to build that ship type. ~Beast

Hey, i'm stuck on my own campaign mission, ToA, the mission is where Tandis gives you the Arnonain Cruiser thing to wipe out the yor in the quadrent. and the part i'm stuck at is, I keep getting my butt kicked no matter what, I research my best on weapons, defence, faster research stuff, transports, building a large military to keep down the yor, building a military to defend my planets, I tried all, I need help with defeating the yor, Please help. I know someones out there that can help, I even tried to use espoinage [I think typo].
