Why I like wincustomize.org...

Why I likes:

1) It's fast... no explination needed... right?

2) There's not many skins on the site.

Explination:

Other sites just don't seem to get this. Maybe it's just me, but when I see 8000 skins available for one app, I feel like a deer looking into oncoming headlights. I just tried this on another site. I noticed that there were very high-quality wallpapers there, but I got to preview like 3 out of 5000 in 5 minutes. I slinked off back to wincustomize, hopefully unnoticed.

At that other site an "outstanding" skin would get like 300 downloads. Here a "good" skin could get 3000. As a skinner, this was my frusturation with DM.

Moderation is fine. Unloading skins with less than X downloads (rating) after Y days is fine. Saying we'll only keep the 100, 500, 1000 best skins per app after X days is fine.

Just keep the site lightweight and fast with the latest and greatest stuff (it doesn't have to be mine), and I'll be happy.

your plan is flawed. who says which skins are the "best" skins? just because you like it does not mean that i will, and vice versa.

art is subjective...

I have to agree with jark.. It IS FLAWED. What some one see's as a great skin another will not see it in the same gratifying light..

who is to say that skin should be dumped because some person(s) did not like it but the choice should still be there for people who do like it. it would not help in certian case's either if it come to moderation, BASED on your assumptions. Particulary with XP skins which get many downloads each day out of the 100's that are now on the site. hmmm...

If we only kept the most popular skins, we might end up with only XP skins here...
Sad thought!

While I agree with you in principle, I don't know if it works... what I mean is this: I rarely looked at sites like Deskmod because there was too much stuff. Even though the best stuff was probably on that site, I just didn't care to sift through it all.

As far as judging what's the best artwork, that's not my point - I'd just like to see one skin site that's fast, simple and convinient. In other words, a site that's not about artwork, but about putting skins on my applications.

Let people just filter out by ratings if they want but don't kick skins off.

Ok, its agreed on that Ratings are not perfect. And its agreed on that Deleting Skins is not perfect.

So as we have been working towards is Filtering based on ratings. It combines both these worlds. It may not be perfect, but I think its a pretty darn good solution.

There is little use in moderating skins. Probably everyone remembers their first skin Was it the best one you did? If I see my first one then I feel a blush coming up. But it was excepted and made me do another. I am not a good skinner, but that one skin helped me to grow. Made me do other (and I hope better) ones and also some plugins.

Bad skins don't cost bandwidth, they just eat up some hard disk space.

The peer ratings probably would work out pretty well, we'll try to put that higher up in the queue to implement. We have a basic on set but it does it for all sections.

I want to see all the WB skins but I only want to see really good wallpapers (good being ones rated highly by respected people).

Could the filter have options? For example if I decide to see only highly downloaded skins/wallpapers instead of seeing only highly rated ones?

Ok, we have had filters based on ratings implemented for quite some time but have not turned them on. So as an experiment to see how well it goes over you can now filter based on ratings.

Go to your Edit Account page. You now have the option to "Show skins only with this rating or higher". This filter works across all sections. If the filtering works out well we will probably make it work on a section by section basis at a later date.

Give it a try. Let us know what you think.
