Icon Madness, SAVE ME!

O.K., It may be a stupid newbie question, but, is it possible when using Windows, to have desktop icons without ANY text underneath them? I usually use Litestep, but due to problems I am having to use the explorer shell, and I'm trying to make the desktop look pretty but that damn icon text is driving me nuts!! Am I unusual in not wanting text beneath my icons?, surely the icon represents the program, making the text surplus to requirements (and it's ugly!).
I'm using Windows ME.
Thanks guys!

Yep, too lazy to point to the app itself, read this: http://www.virtualplastic.org/html/desk_app.html#1

Hmm, DesktopX with an ultra-light theme using normal task- and traybar would be an option.

i'll check out crae's link in a second, but yeah, dx can do it quite easily. you just select properties on your icon (object) and in the window that comes up you del the text in the label field.

and no, you're not alone. one of the most popular little mac gadgets is an extension called 'titlefree.'

after all.. isn't that the -whole- point of icons? to have a little picture representing what you want to do.. otherwise you might as well have big words to click on.. which i've also done in dx before.. hehe

Crae: None of those apps actually remove the TEXT.
Surely someone knows how to get rid of the text?

Hmmm... Migellito, I hate to say this, but,
/me whispers.."I don't like desktop X"
I love window blinds and iconpackager but I find DX a pain. (sorry Brad!)
Come on you 'puter heads, someone must know how to do it.

How about changing the text to space with a litte trick : ALT+255 ? That works, just tested it. In combination with WindowFX it looks even nicer...

Er, sorry I tested it on Standard Desktop Icons, other links don't work... Will shut up now and be ashamed...

Quickchanger will do it, just look under the "options" menu in "icons"...

free, skinnable, efficient.
been using it every doggone day since it's re-release...

Thanks Kenray, but I think some of you are misreading my post. I don't want to make the icon background transparent, (I can do that) I want to get rid of the text altogether! If you right click on any icon, there is an option to Rename, but if you don't type anything it says "You must type a filename". I really don't want text beneath my icons, so if anyone can tell me how to do it, that would be great. Thanks.

boxxi::

"you realise of course, this means war"

hehe.. j/k

i've been on the lookout too, for about 2yrs. if you find anything, let me know. try windowstracker.com

aha.. there you go.. of course it doesn't work for 'all' icons, since it doesn't actually get rid of the text.. still though, thanks crae, and i feel daft for not thinking of it myself

Crae: I thought you were my saviour! But it doesn't work! Well, it does, but only on ONE icon. If you try to change a second one, it says, "cannot rename, a file with that name already exists" GRRRRRRR.......
Oh Well.........

boxxi after all these technical things try this (ok you can kick me if you think i'm retarded)
but change the text to be the same color as your background. name each icon with just one letter who cares what it is....black background...black text.
/me shrugs
ok i'll go back to work now.

BoXXi: just change the name to two ALT-0160 characters for the second icon and then 3,4,5 characters and so on...

Of course you still need to get a utility to make the text background transparent...

silly bean,

Quick Changer has an option to "Hide or Show" icon text, exactly as you have requested. the text remains, it is invisible as you choose it to be.

I have not misunderstood your query, you have misunderstood my reply...

Now try quickchanger and be happy

No...BoXXi is the 'silly bean' alright.....just get back to LiteSTEP...yes, I know....sledge-hammer to crack walnut, etc....

It would be insane if you'd have sixty icons on your screen you'd all have to rename, first one alt+0160, second one that same thing twice, and so on... What a mess!

/me goes off to get Kenray's foot out of his mouth before he chokes

I give up!! I'm gonna have another shot at fixing Litestep instead.
JAFO....HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!!!
heh.
Kenray: I've never been called a silly bean before.
I guess the people who know me know that wouldn't be a good thing.......lol.

how odd.. i used crae's suggestion on 2 icons on the desktop - net neighborhood and ie.. worked fine.. (must be some quirk of the 'special' ie icon..) of course you'd have to do it from within microangelo to do it to the recycle bin..

BoXXi should do what Hell Dragon said and use different names (like mixing up alt+160 and spaces) for it to work, I guess.
