Darksiders: Finally a PC Port that DOESN'T Suck!!!

Are you SURE this thread is about Darksiders and not Mafia 2? I have Mafia 2 but not Darksiders... Yet.

LoL Yes I'm sure. I was going to write a review on Mafia 2 but I've been too busy since I finished it a few weeks ago, maybe a week and a half ago. It was an awesome game, really, really awesome. The production values were just, incredible....jaw dropping honestly. The level of detail in the world is something every developer should strive to emulate.

Darksiders, it's just plain bad ass. It isn't quite as "Open World" 'ed as The Legend of Zelda, but it's close. There's also plenty of stuff in the dungeons that you have to come back for later after you've found the proper weapon or item you use to open a door you couldn't before or to take down a wall you couldn't before with your more powerful weapon. There's also some minor puzzle solving, but nothing serious. You have this spirit thing called "The Watcher" bound to you and you can call on him when you're stuck. The Watcher is voiced by Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, voice of The Joker).

The combat in Darksiders is pretty sweet too if you like fast paced in your face sword combat with demons and monsters. I also rode a gryphon for a while shooting down angles and some flying demons. It was pretty sweet. I'm using a wired X-Box360 controller for the fighting but I would recommend using a mouse for the flying and shooting part. Speaking of the controls, they're responsive and right on the money. There are a few occasions where you might get hit if you pull a finisher while you're surrounded. Finisher move animations take a second or two and an enemy can hit you during that time, but if you're smart and don't do it when you got another guy right next to you it shouldn't be an issue. The finishing moves are totally worth it too. Some of them are flat out brutal, it's awesome.

It's a really fun game. If you liked the Legend of Zelda and you like dark fantasy, Darksiders is the game for you.

I'm using one of the standard wired X-Box360 controllers. When you get to the part where you're riding the Gryphon though I'd say use the mouse and keyboard because that part is more like a on-rails shooter and it's easier to aim with the mouse. I'm sure you can use other controllers as well. I've got a Logitek pad I could try if you're curious as to whether or not it works as well. Is there a particular controller you have in mind for using?

Actually, I haven't picked one up, but will be doing so shortly.  I was leaning towards the 360 joystick anyway, so good stuff.  Just curious if it was a game that would be fun on pc without a joystick.  Thanks!

No prob brother. I highly recommend the wired X-Box360 controller for PC games, even if you don't own a X-Box. I find a lot of games with controller support Only support the 360 wired controller, like Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. SM:WoS I own for my Wii and the PC. I tried all the controllers I had when I first got the PC version and the only one it works with is the wired 360 controller or the mouse and keyboard.

For Darksiders I haven't actually tried the sword fighting with the mouse and keyboard as I have the controller for that but I've seen a lot of comments by other users on some other sites that say how good the keyboard controls work, so you should be good to go if you pick up the game no matter what you're using to play it with.

I definitely find the wired 360 controller handy though. For another example take Mafia 2 which I've mentioned earlier on in the thread. I play all the shooting and fighting parts with my mouse and keyboard, but every time I get into a car (there's a LOT of driving in the game) I immediately pick up the wried 360 controller because I can drive a lot better with it than with the keyboard for some reason.

There is next to no control over graphic functions within the game. That makes it "ok" port in my book. A half of their tool tips are thrown in there too, some don't even report the correct button for the action they're describing. I see a lot of places this feels rushed, but by and large it performs pretty well. It's not a flawless port by any imagination though.

I can kinda see your point on the graphic functions. You can change resolution and a few other basic option, but it is rather basic. I haven't had a problem with tool tips though. All mine report the right button combos. Maybe it's because I'm using an actual x-box360 controller?

Haven't seen worse game this year than this (excl. Dantes Inferno). 100% Console port with 2006 graphics and silly gameplay. I'm surprised controls are OK on keyboard though.

lol are you sure we're even playing the same game my friend? I'm probably about 1/3 of the way through Darksiders and I think it's pretty bad ass. It's like a demon filled evil version of "The Legend of Zelda" on steroids.

I have Darksiders on the 360, so I can't speak for the faithfullness of the PC Port.  What I can tell you is that I purchased Darksiders and God of War + God of War II on the same day.  I've finished Darksiders, played five hours of God of War and haven't opened God of War II.

While Darksiders is most accurately described as the Legend of Zelda + God of War, it's puzzles are much smarter than you'd think and it's combat is much more varied than God of War.  Don't mis-understand me however - the combat eventually gets repetative.  The first hour or so after the Into is it's weakest moments - it takes too long to let the player loose.  Once it hits its stride though, you're presented with a unique, interesting game with a gorgeous art style, good combat mechanics, smart and involved puzzles and a decent enough plot (it gets a touch convoluted at the end though).

And, I have to admit, Darksiders had one of the best moments in recent gaming memory: anyone who's finished it should know the line "Not alone" and the smile that errupts on your face as the camera pans.  I'll be grabbing the sequel day one.

I played it at a friends but all I kept thinking was that this has been done before, and better. The graphics are a total lackluster for a 2010 pc game.

If you're using a controller for a PC game, it's not really a port.

The main problem with ports is usually that they play horrendously with PC controls.

It is fairly obvious that this problem disappears if you have a controller. But controllers are for all intents and purposes an inferior means of control and I'd like to avoid stooping low enough to get one, just because the industry have decided to force-feed me bad ports.

Yeah, no matter how you slice it the game is a straight console port. It's a fun game, but that's because it's a fun game, not because they did something special to port it to PC (other than allowing you to pick resolution)

It still saddens me to this day how much the awful port of Oblvion really hurts it. Half the mods I have installed are fixing the UI and CTD issues.
