Fun with bandwidth

Just to get an idea of how much bandwidth skin sites need nowadays, consider this:

The #1 download here by itself - WinXP V7 icon package would require 3 56k modems running at full 56k full time in order to satisfy the bandwidth for it.

It would overwhelm the bandwidth of a site running a full ISDN line (128K).

In fact, just to handle that one skin (icon package), the site would need at least a fractional T1.

It would use about 5% of the bandwidth skinz.org had at the end of last year.

Every 10 minutes, it's been downloaded by 7 new people 24 hours a day.

So when you wonder where all the skin sites rae going, it's because skinning is becoming very popular. It means that skin sites are not just expensive but think of the constant hard drive crunching that the servers must do on these sites.

The community is growing -- rapidly.

If the top skin were being downloaded to floppy, it would take over 1000 floppies per day to hold it.

If it were a file on C-net's download.com, the world's most popular program download site, it would rank in the top 100 worldwide.

The 10th most popular skin download would qualify as being one of the top 20 desktop enhancements on Download.com (which has skins on it).

The top 10 downloads would require a dedicated T1 just to handle those 10.

The number of people who download Treetog's skins in a given week is equivalent of a medium sized city.

Hey Frogboy, I know how expensive it is to run a site, and I haven't had anything nearly as popular as your site. I have however, found that there are very few, but still some, good banner companies out there that have survived the "magical" internet advertising model and continue to pay good rates. One such company is www.advertwizard.com, who pay in British pounds, which is always very nice, and it's not hard to get signed up. If making a spot for a single, reasonably unobtrusive banner is something you're considering, check these guys out, they've been good to a couple of people I know so far, and their rates are more than reasonable (no fixed CPM, just based on what they're selling the space for). If you're generating over 250cpm/month, there's no reason that this site shouldn't be at least paying for itself.

think upon this:

when things finally go optical, you'll be able to download everything on this site 100 times in a single second.

i cannot wait....

Glad that personalization is getting more popular. Why call it customization? Isn't what we are really doinhg the act of personalizing our computers? That's why I love skins.
