New Section discussion

With the end of the month fast approaching, we're coming to where we need to make some decisions.

As some of you know, the original goal of WinCustomize was to feature mainly the apps that had already become fairly popular. But last month with Deskmod going down, we decided to open things up a little more and added sections that we might otherwise not have added.

This month we added 5 sections - Graphics, KewlPad, CoolPlayer, Beatnik, and Colorpad.

Coolplayer and Beatnik seem to be doing pretty well. But Kewlpad, Graphics, and Colorpad are not doing so well.

Rather than kill the sections at the end of the month, we've been thinking of coming up with an alternative. We don't want this site to end up where it has a gazillion sections off on the left where most of them get little or no activity.

An alternative would be to list the top 16 or so sections and the others would show up under a fuller library when they user clicked on Categories.

Registered users could also from their profile pick which sections they can and can't see. So if they want to see all 30+ sections or whatever eventually they could do that. And when someone created an account, we'd make it apparent that they can do this and that those other sections exist in case they didn't know they were here.

By the same token, users who just want to see 5 or 6 sections can just pick 5 or 6 from the list that they want to see.

By doing this, we don't have to get into killing sections that are borderline while we still keep the site from listing sections in which only a handful (literally) of people are interested in.

hadn't that been mentioned in one of the older threads?

I like the idea.

If you decide to do it this way, will you still be highlighting apps every month, and only adding them after they are highlighted, or just add all sections at one time and organize them from the beginning?

Being able to pick the sections you want to "monitor", sounds like an x-ellent idea Frogger!!

I understand from this that new sections would be highlighted in the way they have been but sections that do not get a lot of skins will go into the 'More sections' bit rather than being removed. Is that correct? If so, you've got my vote.

That is a great idea. I for one would LOVE to say which sections I want up and which ones will not be visable from the front page.
Right on!

Great Ideas. You know, until reading this thread I never actually clicked on the "Graphics" section. Kinda like a lost and found.

I don't think there is a better solution than that Brad

Great! And yea, we would still highlight sections. Heck, i think it would be nice if over time we re-highlighted existing sections (especiall lesser known ones) to re-expose them to new users.

This feature should show up in July.

Cool. Just make sure to include a 'show all' on demand option without having to change one's profile.

Any thoughts you wish to share as to what new sections (apps) you are considering?

I agree with Russ we'll need a show all also.
