Help with Adobe Photoshop 6.0

Ok two separate things. First I have tytorial from sty-x.com on creating a glass sphere and I am stuck. After creating and filling the first image the tutorial says I new to add a color overlay. It tells me to go to layer>layer style> coloroverlay but layer style is greyed out. So I can't go any further. Help!! Second I have an image that has a sphere on it or background. I want to remove the background so that all I have left is the sphere. Please keep this very simple because I have no knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and for some reason nothing makes sense to me. Thanks. If possible please email me.

Hi, (witch idiot has created a tutorial where you need help /me get kicked by bushman )

You probably have your image on grayscale, try
Image>Mode>RBG color

The easiest way to get your sphere out is to take the elliptical marquee tool, and try making it the same zise as your sphere.
If it dasn't fit perfectly, try to center the sphere over the image, right mouse click on it, and then transform selection.
The best way to make a sphere smaller is to use the ...% tab on the top of your window.

[tip: By drawing the circle, try hold the shift key, in that case the sphere will be perfectly round.]

I checked the mode and it's set on RBG not grey scale but the layer style is still greyed out. Man this sucks. It's things like this that keep me from skinning.

Ok after choosing transform selection then what. This is what I am talking about with most people and tutorials they feel that you have some experience working with the programs. I don't I have no clue what to do next. I tried things but none did what I needed.

Bushman, you would like me to send you the .psd file?

Yes.

Ok. (if you didn't figure it out yet, I am the owner of styl-X )

I will send it to you right away.

You said you were a beginning skinner, could you give me some tips on what tutorials to make more, I mean, what would you like to learn (for photoshop) that would help you on your way?

hope this isn't poaching the thread but as a new skinner as well, using photoshop principally, I'm extremely ignorant about things like dodge/multiply/screen etc which I saw u used in your glass sphere tutorial, simple techniques which produced a fine end product in very few steps...to a photoshop noob it all sounds like ancient Greek. I can follow the steps but don't really understand all the processes and so can't adapt and apply them to other projects...

I ramble, excuse me...basically it's great you take the time to make your tutorials - wp gg etc

I tought about the same thing too, maby I will add a tutorial witch explains the layer 'styles'
This screen thing in the glass button tutorial is quite easy, by setting the layer to screen, it fades away all the black, and by that it creates a white transparant gradient. see?

hehe, yeah dude - tbh the only one of the layer styles I even vaguely understand is "normal", and I suspect even there I'm deluding myself

I kind of figured you had something to do with the tutorial (Name). I'm like Tiggs none of it makes sense I still don't know why the style is greyed out and I can't use it. So I am no further along with the project. If you could make your tutorials with more explaining the steps keeping in mind that you are doing this for the first time. I understood your tutorial but when I got to the Layer style part it was greyed out and I still don't know why. For what ever reason this commun between you and me got side tracked. I had to format my system I think maybe that Blaster Worm got me. Anyway I will install Adobe again and try the tutorial again. Maybe we can talk via email or something like that so as not to keep getting side tracked.

I'm a NOOB too and Styl skinner I plan on visiting your site quite often when you have updated your tutorials .... I'm learning by trial and error mostly but like you were saying all the layer options are a mystery to me as well as alot of other things. It would be great nto have tutorials that explain what each thingy does but not just "hey, this does that" more like this can do this, this, this, and that. DETAILS. I know we might be aking alot but what alternative do we have.

THANKS

I do need to put some more tutorials online yeah, I think I will put some up tonight, or tomorow. (Damn clients keep whining me on the head )

Styl skinner, could you please do a tutorial covering gradients,PLZ! I find that I cant make anything look REALLY good without them. Sure I can add highlights and such but its just not the same. Like how to make them for starters would be nice (such a noob), how to confine them to just a small area of the graphic you're working on, just some details would be great. THANK YOU

the details on images that you see are mostly not done with gradients, but I will write a tutorail about them.

(most 'light effects' on a skin for example are done with feathering things)
Hey Styl, ok and could you PLZ explain that too, 'cause I never even knew that, I thought it was all gradients (such a NOOB ) good lord do I have alot to learn

Thanks for helping us, I for one really appreciate it!!

Well now this beats all.I posted a question that I need help in and this section ends up with other NOOB's asking for more tutorials > and my 2 questions are still not answered. >. So what's the use of posting here anyway? Yes I'm pissed because I thought I could get help here but only got lost in the bull. > .

Bushman, relax, this are people who are doing this in their spare time, to help other people. Now, I sended you a .psd file, did that clear things out?

About the other question I am not sure, you could try to draw a cricle around it and cut it out...
Your psd file looks great but it never (and you) answered my questions. Even in our emails Styl my questions were never answered. I still don't know why the things are happening. So I quit working on it.

Sometimes we need to look at our selfs to see the problems so that the answers are more clear. This post is dead. I am sorry that nothing happened here.
