A telling Statement

"In another 2 years everyone will"

I was researching the Shore Bank of Chicago for an  aunt of mine recently (there appears to be a potential scandal there) because she no longer trusts Snopes for getting to the truth about anything Obama (indeed, if you search for any Obama story that may be true or is true, you do not find it at Snopes, but you do find it at Truth or Fiction).

As I was checking out an email she had been sent (the always circulating ones that we all get from our relatives and friends), my wife asked me what I was doing.  So I told her - and commented that "Aunt B sure hates Obama".

Her comeback kind of surprised me - "In another 2 years everyone will".  This from a lady who hated Bush with a passion (she lived in Texas during his tenure there).  And voted for Obama for mainly that reason! (and no, she did not "cancel" my vote as I have already made it clear I did not vote for McCain).

I have stated before that I do not trust the polls that show Obama's popularity.  Some call it the Bradley effect (Given my residency, I call it the Wilder Effect).  I believe that many who say they support Obama do so just so they will not be called racists.  After the incessant labeling of everyone who disagrees with ANYTHING that Obama does over the past 4 years (it started during the primaries) as racists, I can sympathize with them.  Not go along with them, but understand the desire to just live and let live.

Clinton did a lot of things that were unpopular in his first 2 years in office, but the polls did not even hint at the defeat the democrats suffered in 94.  This year the polls are showing a bad year for the democrats - actually showing that they will lose one house of congress.  So the anger this year appears to be greater than in 94, yet Obama remains relatively immune from the anger - or so the polls say.

I think many that "approve" of Obama are like my wife.  They are apolitical, and very disappointed.  But they just do not tell pollsters that.

The problem with polls is that its hard to get an accurate read/polls don't tell the whole story.  You have shown this.

Obviously by the time November 7th (I'm considering the counting of absentees) rolls around we'll know especially if its a landslide.  If most politicans win by a landslide you can say that people were pissed for certain.

Hopefully, this hasn't caused people to become even more apathetic because I can imagine people just being disenfranchised (in 2008/2006 this number keeps growing) saying 'I don't care any more because none of them are truly for me!' and don't vote.

Perhaps people are getting smarter

Or so it seems.  The big worry among democrats is that their base is just not energized, so will not turn out, while the republican base is.  So while people may be getting smarter, they are not getting less apathetic.  Until you kick them in the teeth, they just do not care to take the time.

As for me, you will not have to wait until then.  I am voting absentee this year, so my vote is going in a month.

Is the reason for you getting an absentee ballot is because it is against your religious beliefs to vote at the polls? :-)  I also liked that reason.  Its against my religion to go to the poll but if you mail it to me its alright.

Actually no - but I like that one!  This is the first time in my life I am voting absentee.

Well, I hope you get yours and that it'll actually be counted.  I never got ANY of mine which was unacceptable.

What state were you in at that time?  I have not heard of any problems in this one.  We had one race that was decided by 3 votes (a local one), so I am sure all absentee ballots were counted in that one.

Indiana and Colorado.  Living overseas, I just figured the odds are slim of me getting one.  Yes, I filled out the forms and everything.

Bummer - sorry to hear that. At least Colorado is a key state this year (I think the dems have given up on Indiana).

I guess she is an Aunt B - although that is the only thing my Aunt and the character on Andy Griffin have in common! ;)
