Well, this sounds like a familiar story... a teacher with some Muslim students tells her students that they can replace "Jesus" in a Christmas song with "virtue," and everyone gets in a tizzy. Sounds like something that could be happening anyway in Anglo-North America, doesn't it. But there is a fine twist to this one.

It's happening in Italy... one of the great centers of the Catholic world. And the Pope is not amused. Neither is the Mayor of the town where this happened or the brother of the Prime Minister who runs Il Giornale, a national paper in that country.

This follows a court ruling(this sounds really familiar doesn't it), that a crucifix had to be removed from a school wall.

And the funny thing is... the Muslim students apparently commented that they didn't mind singing Jesus in the songs, and they are quite willing to do so, sort of cutting this controversy off at the knees, but it still means that there might be a next time.

The point is more that if Jesus was being censored in one of the most Catholic countries in Europe, then it really is pointing to a very frightening trend.

I beleive religious freedom means you can worship whomever u please, or not at all, and also not to pressure them into ur religion. I do not know how sayings like "happy holidays" does this... They are happying saying men to raise spirits, not hurt them. If you are truely offended by "one nation under god" ,just dont say it, or just leave i dont feel like putting up with that crap...

My mum (who lives in the UK) was saying today that there has been talk in England about changing 'christmas' to 'winter holiday' out of respect to the Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian population.


She said, and I quote : "I think we should tell them that this is England and we celebrate Christmas here.  If they don't like it, they can bugger off back to wherever they came from and celebrate whatever it is that they celebrate.  Christmas is only one bloody day anyway...we put up with their feasts and whatnot, so they can put up with ours."

The holiday season will always have a religious connotation to it. The only real way to remove it from society and prevent a theocracy is to remove winter holidays from the government. Only when students and government employees are forced to go to school on Christmas is when the nation can honestly say that it isn't influenced by religion.
