Unable to load saves after latest patch?

Just spent 4h playing the game, and man I had the sweetst empire going. More recources and shards than you could swing a sword at(on the hardest level of gameplay, or course). Then I take a brake(never a good idea) and hey there is a new patch out, great. Well maybe not, as now I cant load the old saves, says its the wrong game version. Never encounted this before playing other games. Bug or fact?

We tried to maintain compatibility with the pre-1.06 save games, but some people were still having trouble. We are trying to keep that invalidation of previous saves to a minimum, but it didn't work out this time.
