1. Disclaimer:

I’m going to be very picky, and will be pointing out every thing I see that either stands out as awkward to me or are blatant bugs.  I’m not doing this to troll the forum or to say that Elemental is not a good game.  I’m doing this because I believe that Stardock has the ability to continue to work on and improve Elemental: War of Magic continuously.  Right now I’m going to play normally and not try and mess with things and see what comes up naturally.

I had a longer rant but I shortened it because it was boring.

2. Computer specs

Windows 7 64-bit
Q9450
4850 crossfired - windowed mode to prevent alt tab crash
dual monitor (if it matters)
4gb ram

3. Impressions - Day 0 Patch 113 turns played.

First of all I think this is a great game, and for me at least it is very stable, I’ve only crashed twice not including the alt-tab issue.  Also every time I sit down to play I find it very hard to stop...one...more...turn...  There are still polish issues but after the Day-0 patch it is miles...light-years ahead of the previous build.  As for the things I found, they aren’t exactly game killers but they could definitely be annoying especially for someone who is more casually interested in the game rather.

4. Bugs

5. Crashes
  • I’m not counting the alt-tab crash so...None!  You gain one cookie (with an asterisk).
6. Nitpicks

  • Confirmation pop up when overwriting a saved game.
  •  New available resource notification in the event list is nice but may be overlooked.
  • A notification to end turn when all units have moved would be nice to have.
  • Display the resource bonus on the resource type encyclopedia entry, not just the resource building entry.
  • Cost/Benefit ratio for some equipment doesn’t make sense to me.
  • There are no encyclopedia entries for the different treaties.
  • Need feedback on how to use caravans.
  • A city list with important details for quick reference would be nice.
  • Needs feedback for invalid actions.
  • When a city levels there needs to be a way to see the city’s details.
  • Can easily lure enemy melee units to their death in tactical battles.
  • Inability to combine treaties when negotiating.
  • Not intuitive how to perform diplomatic actions with minor factions.
  • 7. Questions

    Preface:

These are questions that I have about the game that can probably be answered by other players.  However this means I don’t understand something about the game and either a) I missed something b) I am stupid or c) the game does not explain it to me properly.  Option a and b mean my ego takes a hit, option c however is a problem.

    • What happened to the huge map?  Pretty simple.   It was something I was really looking forward to but the option is missing now.  The biggest map we can select is large.
    • I don’t understand how city influence works and how it expands.  I could just be dull and have missed something but I don’t know when or why it expands so that I can build more or get access to new resources.
    • Can you sell old equipment?  I buy new gear for my champions and I can never get rid of it.  What can I do with it?
    • What is labour in building requirements?  In the building encyclopedia entries it lists labour.  What is that?  I haven’t seen it anywhere else.

    8. Verbose Bug, Crash and Nitpick descriptions

    Bugs
    • Unit path finding does not take the most optimal route.  I’m labeling this a bug because it is detrimental to the game as units waste their moves.  An example to clarify.  A normal unit has two moves.  It is given a destination which is two moves away.  Now it can move through a tile of grassland and then once more into that destination tile.  However sometimes (or all the time?) it moves into a tile that requires more than one movement such as a forest and gets stuck.  I do like how it uses the city in its calculation though.
    • Constructing resource buildings next to city enters the city’s construction queue.  I’ve seen this reported on the forum before.  Simply if the building that is being constructed to extract the resource is adjacent to a city, it enters the queue and must either wait for buildings currently under construction or gets backlogged.  If the tile is not near a city it will build on its own.  Related to this is the fact it uses up one of the limited tiles that a city can have (I have not run into this but I saw it reported)
    • Able to cast strategic spells when out of moves.  I don’t know if this is a bug or not but it seemed to be in a gray area to me so I listed it.  Basically I moved my Sovereign towards a city and when it was out of moves I cast Brilliance on the city.
    • Tactical battle UI displaying HP updates before the battle animation finishes.  Happens every time.  When in a fight when attacking a unit (or being attacked) watch the different places the unit’s HP is displayed and it will update before the animation is done and the damage notification pops up.  The three places I noticed was in the unit card when hovering the mouse over it, the progress bar at the bottom and the unit list at the right (for the enemy).
    • Interface remains zoomed when moving to next unit when accepting quest.  I moved into a hut with my Sovereign’s army’s last move and accepted the Maggie’s Ring quest it then zoomed to where I am supposed to go to get the key to the chest.  Then since my unit ran out of moves it then zoomed to the next unit, still very close.  This is ultra trivial but it confused me for a second so I thought I’d include it here.
    • Auto-resolve suicides weak units.  Wasn’t sure if I should put this in bugs or nitpicking.  In any case I had a pioneer being escorted by a relative strong unit (combat rating 38).  I used this army to attack a bear with a combat rating of under 10.  Since there was such a high discrepancy it auto resolved without even asking me...and the pioneer was killed.  I was not amused!

    Crashes

    Cookie

    Nitpicks

    • New available resource notification in the event list is nice but may be overlooked.  The first time I noticed it was because of the big exclamation mark on the terrain tile and then happened to glance at the event list which included it as well.  A suggestion I have is to have the event notification appear in the centre of the screen first (maybe a bit bigger with text about what happened) and then it would shrink and go to the event list.  This is for any event really not just the resource one but it was new so I picked on it.
    • Cost/Benefit ratio for some equipment doesn’t make sense to me.  I was equiping a unit and comparing the different armors I could give it.  It just seems strange to me that to buy a Padded Cuirass costs 3 gildars and 1 material and gives the unit 3 defense.  However both the Padded Armlets and Padded Greaves  cost 5 gildars and 5 materials each and give only 1 defense.  Same ratio for the Soldier’s Cloak which costs 10 gildars and 10 materials and gives 2 defense.  I haven’t gotten any farther with the equipment so I don’t know if this continues or not.
    • Need feedback on how to use caravans.  If I didn’t read about it on the forum I wouldn’t have not known how to use caravans.  I would probably stumbled on how to use it through trial and error but if there was some way of letting the user know how to use it (when the first caravan is built Janusk tells you what to do).  Or maybe it is in the game and I just haven’t noticed.
    • A city list with important details for quick reference would be nice.  Once again shamelessly referring to Civilization’s city list which I find to be very useful.  I wanted to see what all my cities were building and I had to click on each one.  Another time I wanted to see how close my cities were to leveling up and once again I had to click on each city one by one.  Yes I was being lazy but I was also used to being able to glance at all the information at once.
    • Needs feedback for invalid actions.  The specific action I was trying to do was cast Brilliance on my city.  I eventually got the spell cast but if there was something more than just a red highlight vs a green highlight I wouldn’t have to get frustrated moving my unit around trying to find a sweet spot to cast the spell.  This follows for all actions that can be invalid in some circumstances.
    • Can easily lure enemy melee units to their death in tactical battles.  In my opinion having the ability to attack twice while having only one movement is overpowered.  What I do now is just sit back let the enemy move towards me and each of my units gets two attacks without fear of a targeted attack (if I can kill a unit in one or two hits).  It’s even worse when I can one hit the enemy units because then I can kill two in one round.  Yes if I can one hit a unit I should be able to win the fight easily, however now I rarely take any damage at all.
    • Inability to combine treaties when negotiating.  This may be a design decision.  I wanted to include a non-aggression pact with a technology treaty because the AI’s values of the treaties would have balanced out.  May be a design decision to stop exactly what I was trying to do...but it makes sense (sign this trade agreement and we won’t attack you).
    • Not intuitive how to perform diplomatic actions with minor factions.  At least it wasn’t intuitive to me, I had to ask on the forums.  My first thought was to go to the foreign relations tab in the Kingdom information window.  I never thought to click on the faction’s units to start negotiating.  Also they seem sort of dull as they sit around and do nothing the whole game.

The End.  I hope this helps.

    6. Verbose descriptions

    Bugs
    • When hovering mouse over a goodie hut or quest tile the detail pop up at the bottom right doesn’t appear until you’re on the “top” half of the tile.
    • Viewing enemy stack details and hovering over the units in the stack doesn’t always show right unit card.  Click on a unit stack that contains multiple units.  I hover my mouse over one of the units in the stack and it displays that unit’s unit card.  When I move to another unit though the card doesn’t always refresh.
    • Opened a goodie hut, got a potion twice (repeated the same message twice as well).  Maybe this is supposed to happen but having the same message appear twice is annoying.  Maybe have the message say you got two.
    • Combining stack causes the stack to have the amount of moves as the stack being moved into.  Example you have Stack 1 and Stack 2.  Stack 2 has already moved so it has 0 now.  When Stack 1 moves into stack 2 regardless of how many moves the units in Stack 1 have, they will have 0 moves.  Same thing if Stack 2 had moves left and Stack 1 expended all of its moves to combine into Stack 2.  Stack 2 will have lots of moves including the units from Stack 1.
    • When looking at units equipment the detail shows the previous equipment that was being looked at.  Simple to reproduce, look at a unit’s inventory and click on a piece of equipment.  Close the equipment window and open it up again, it will still show the previously selected item.
    • Can equip a quest key.  I forgot what the quest name is but you have to fight some monsters for the key then you take the key to a chest and get a ring.  When you get the key you keep it even after you open the chest and you can click on it to equip it even though it does nothing.
    • Entered a hut which did nothing.  I am level 3 in questing while a hut is level 2.  Update I am still level 3 in questing and I entered another hut which did nothing, and then an ancient ruins which also did nothing.  I have two active quests right now, perhaps I only can have 2?  If so it should tell me that I cannot accept anymore quests.
    • Inconsistent scrolling in the action bar.  In a stack with a pioneer and pressed the next button in the action bar and then pressed the back button.  What actually happens is when I hit next only the last two options are shown (guard and pass turn) when I hit back it goes back to the previous items but has guard and pass turn as the last two actions so the first two actions (build settlement and trade) don’t get shown.  Confusing and maybe should be more of a nitpicks.
    • Can make the unit stack in city “disappear” in UI only.  Select a city with units (mine specifically had 2 a peasant and a pioneer).  Click on the construct improvement button.  Click again the units are now gone.  When you click out and click back on the city they come back.
    • Update to previous unit does not take optimal path bug. It doesn’t take road roads in consideration either.  I reported this yesterday as well but didn’t notice they ignore roads.
    • Enemy archer only fired on the first turn.  It didn’t even move after it fired, I walked up and beat it to death.  Update:  In another battle he didn’t attack once.  However in others they fight normally.
    • Yellow border does not disappear when building improvement for city.  I assume yellow means the city is not building anything, if you click on a city with that border and start building a building it remains yellow for that turn.
    • Lost all sound, noticed when I went into a tactical battle.  Here is the copypaste of debug.err if it helps. http://pastebin.ca/1925648.  Sorry I cannot be more precise.
    • Unit description for designed unit says “A peasant with a stick.”  You can’t edit this in the unit designer unless I missed and if so then maybe it is not evident to the user.
    • Air shard with shrine on it looks black on the map.  It looks like the shadows or bottom level is there but nothing else
    • Disabled Treaties and declare war options in negotiation re-enable when clicking dynasties when unable to create a dynasty.  I had all the treaties I could have with a minor faction.  Non-Aggression Pact, Trade and research agreement.  The main menu has I declare war! and Treaties disabled.  When I click on Dynasties the guy says “Come talk to me when you have some children that can be married off”.  I declare war! and Treaties are now enabled again.
    • Cannot select Trade Treaty.  I’m talking to Polapel Mystics and I can’t negotiate a Trade Treaty.  I can click it but it won’t get added to the negotiation list.  Later I tried again and it worked.  I don’t know what changed.
    • Casting brilliance on city does not update the “City HUD”.  By City HUD I mean the info about a city you can see from the map.  The city initially searched 1 Tech point a turn.  Then I cast Brilliance on it and the HUD did not change.  However when I went to look at the details it said it was producing 2 points.
    • Controlling 2 shards causes the 2nd shard type to spill out of the resource UI (the thing at the top).   I control 1 air shard and 1 earth shard.  The earth shard is the right most in the UI and it is not inside the container box thing.  Update.  When I trained some units that required crystals it fixed itself.  The crystals went from 72 to 56.
    • Cannot reach notable level 5 with Empire.  namad7 mentioned this on IRC when someone was having issues getting quests to open up.  He says that the 2nd last notable bonus isn’t given when the appropriate tech is researched.  He says it is the destiny’s scrolls tech and maybe Kingdom has it too.

    Crashes
    • Nada
    Nitpicks
    • User settings are reset to default after a patch.  Is it possible for the settings to remain the same?  More of a user experience thing, I hate having to going back to change the settings every time.
    • No start turn notification.  I know there is a sound but there’s no visual feedback.  This adds to the fact there is no sign to the user that there is work going on between turns.  It ends up being like the turn suddenly starts out of nowhere.  The way I’ve been keeping track of whether or not a turn has started or not is when the progress bars move for research.
    • Show move when holding right mouse button.  Holding mouse down when making move doesn’t move but it would be cool if it showed the destination and number of turns to reach there, like Civ 4
    • Esc key in the options window doesn’t close the options window.  Nothing else to add to this.
    • Hard to tell when something is a forest on the edges of the forest area.  It just looks like the terrain the trees are on and I have to watch the terrain hud to know.
    • Can wear multiple rings.  Most games only allow someone to wear 2 (one for each hand). Design decision?  Same thing with amulets apparently.
    • Units in battle who get wounded lose their units which never come back.  Now instead of healing units after battle you just disband them and build new ones to replace them.  Would have liked units to either replenish when healing or have some sort of retraining ability in a city.
    • Hard to see the wild horses resource unless zoomed in really close or using cloth map.  It looks like a normal forest tile because you don’t see the horsies until you zoom in close.
    • Trading item selects first item again after a trade.  When trading an item between champions, when one item is tradedthe next highlighted item is the first item in the list, not the next item in the list which I expected.
    • No grid in cloth map.  Would have liked that when playing on the cloth map.
    • Pass turn button makes unit lose all moves. What if I wanted to change my mind later, and just wanted it not to show up as needing orders.
    • When foundin a city other units in the stack move away.   Why not have the units be in the city defending it by default?  Same with building an improvement on a tile with a unit although this one is questionable.  Maybe say the unit has to move first or give query asking if they want the stack to enter the city (otherwise cancel).
    • Right click when selecting a city does not de-select it.  Just minor annoyance to me I don’t know if it is even an issue.
    • Population of a town can be zero.  I plopped down a city and immediately built a caravan and the population dropped to 0.  Could be fine either way.
    • City card when hovering over a city could show what is currently being built.  Would be helpful when trying to make decisions.
    • Name of terrain during battle “Green Tactical Forest” sounds awkard, why not just Forest?
    • Not accepting a quest removes it from the map.  Design decision?  I would have rather had it stay there so that I can accept it later.  This is an issue with one of the quest where you have to fight right away, I went in there with Janusk and declined to fight and it disappeared.
    • Don’t know why I can’t build a building in a city.  I have all the requirements but it does not tell me why.  I can click on the box to select the building to build but the ground doesn’t highlight anywhere for me to place it.
    • Some of the “new” units that the game tells me I can make are the same.  Noticed so far : Guard and Royal Guard.  The two archers might be as well but I can’t remember.
    • Can’t re-zoom to a quest objective.  I had an old quest and I wasn’t sure where to go.  I know I can go to the cloth map and look for the yellow icons but it would be nice if there was a zoom button that will take you to the objective just like when you first take the quest.
    • Polapel Mystics and Yoren negotiation guy looks the same.  When I went to negotiate with both Yoren and Polapel Mystics the guy I talk to when the negotiation starts look the same.  Maybe they are all the same I haven’t met any others.
    • No encyclopedia info on unit actions.  I wanted to click on “seige” but it didn’t do anything.  In fact there are a lot of things that don’t have encyclopedia entries.
    • The unit card quotes of the minor faction family members are all same by gender.  Male says “United, the magic users of the world fear no one”.  The female says “I desire a family, my lord!”.  Note this doesn’t include the leader of the faction I am just looking at them from the cloth map so maybe those are fine.
    • Perceived value seems to have decimal places.  When negotiating with factions and matching the perceived value, even though it seems like the values are equal (73 v 73) the faction will still reject the trade and you need to add 1 more.
    • Last remaining AI archer unit keeps running. Even though it can’t shoot (due to required moves on a tile) so I have to chase it all the way across the battle map before I can engage it. When it finally reached the end it just sat there.
    • Between turn progress report for better user experience. Was chatting on IRC when someone mentioned that there is a slight delay between turns.  After a small discussion we determined it was probably the AI “thinking”.  One user did not find the wait to be acceptable.  In my opinion if there is some sort of notification that the AI is taking it’s turn users will be less unhappy because they realize something is going on.  Right now it just hangs for a few seconds and then continues.
    • Not many good card poses for units armed with bows.  When designing an archer unit a lot of the poses had multiple issues like clipping into the body and since the bow is held in the left hand the pose has the soldier holding thin air in some cases.
    • Moving a unit out of a city causes you to lose focus on the unit.  I would have prefered if the unit remained selected if it still has moves left.
    • There’s no quit confirmation when pressing alt +F4 to close.  I don’t know if this is a big deal or not I just noticed it when I quit to polish this up.

Note as I was posting this in IRC it was brought up that you could give a  Sovereign infinite moves (if you just keep leveling him and giving him appropriate gear).  This makes the organized trait ultra overpowered as you can move huge armies all around the world at ease.  These need to be addressed.

Edit1:  Oops I just realized maybe this thread should be in ideas or support.  If mods think so please move it!  I'm gonna keep updating this as I go.

I'm sure someone reads all this. Good stuff and all, what I read, but are you absolutely sure you couldn't say the same things with fewer words? Also why does everyone want to post their opinions on the same things. Getting repetitive. And by getting I mean it has been from the day -1.

    1. Fewer words is the first section (with the links). I thought I was putting too much when I first typed it up too.  I wanted to be as descriptive as possible for Stardock though so I put the long version at the bottom.

    2. I think it is better that things are repeated than people not posting about it because they think someone else has already.  It's like when you see someone breaking into a house and decide not to call the police because someone else probably has already.

"Sometimes clicking to move a unit makes it move somewhere else.  The unit moves into a different tile than I had selected (or at least thought I selected).  Happens quite often to me.  I am using the right click button on the mouse to move."

Make sure you don't have auto-explore enabled.

Yeah I did not (I never use it anyways).

to be more specific its like it will move to a tile next to it as if I had clicked on the wrong one!

In case you haven't discovered this yet, when you go to the item shop there is a sell tab in the top right so you can sell old gear.

Hi there, new game with the new patch!  I couldn’t play my old save game because I couldn’t move my units anymore.  Also I intended to stop at 75 but I kept playing...I also kept playing after I stopped and had to update the number of turns I had played...  I enjoyed the tiny list I came up with though!

    • Cancelling construction of a building does not return it to construction window.  I built a building in the wrong place and I went into the build bar and cancelled it but it didn’t go back to the improvements window, I had to click on the build button again for it to come back.
    • Highlighted tile does not go away.  Strange issue not sure how it happened, it is also on the cloth map.  The highlight is a brown highlight.
    • Notable location unavailable text does not fit in the pop up.  Walked into a ruined house which required level 2 and the text was cut off when it told me I couldn’t open it yet.
    Crashes

    Nitpicks
    • Can build regular city improvements outside influence.  For fun I made a really long line of buildings that stretched out of my influence area.  Could be a design decision to allow it.
    • Battles do not use movement points.  Could be a design decision as well, just seemed strange to me.  Theoretically you could have a unit surrounded and have it battle all of those units (as long as it survives)
    • Cannot add negative value to a negotiation offer.  I wanted to offer 1 less Gildar than i was initially offering and I had to cancel the offer and redo it.  If I want to add I can just click on Gildar again.
    • Zero doesn’t disappear when typing in numbers during negotiation.  When choosing a value during a negotiation it starts at 0.  When you start typing the 0 doesn’t go away.  Super nitpick.
    • Building a city with a stack with no moves zooms to next unit even after “Improve City” is clicked. Kind of annoying because I expected to stay there.
