1. Disclaimer:
I’m going to be very picky, and will be pointing out every thing I see that either stands out as awkward to me or are blatant bugs. I’m not doing this to troll the forum or to say that Elemental is not a good game. I’m doing this because I believe that Stardock has the ability to continue to work on and improve Elemental: War of Magic continuously. Right now I’m going to play normally and not try and mess with things and see what comes up naturally.
I had a longer rant but I shortened it because it was boring.
2. Computer specs
Windows 7 64-bit
Q9450
4850 crossfired - windowed mode to prevent alt tab crash
dual monitor (if it matters)
4gb ram
3. Impressions - Day 0 Patch 113 turns played.
First of all I think this is a great game, and for me at least it is very stable, I’ve only crashed twice not including the alt-tab issue. Also every time I sit down to play I find it very hard to stop...one...more...turn... There are still polish issues but after the Day-0 patch it is miles...light-years ahead of the previous build. As for the things I found, they aren’t exactly game killers but they could definitely be annoying especially for someone who is more casually interested in the game rather.

5. Crashes
- I’m not counting the alt-tab crash so...None! You gain one cookie (with an asterisk).
Preface:
These are questions that I have about the game that can probably be answered by other players. However this means I don’t understand something about the game and either a) I missed something b) I am stupid or c) the game does not explain it to me properly. Option a and b mean my ego takes a hit, option c however is a problem.
- What happened to the huge map? Pretty simple. It was something I was really looking forward to but the option is missing now. The biggest map we can select is large.
- I don’t understand how city influence works and how it expands. I could just be dull and have missed something but I don’t know when or why it expands so that I can build more or get access to new resources.
- Can you sell old equipment? I buy new gear for my champions and I can never get rid of it. What can I do with it?
- What is labour in building requirements? In the building encyclopedia entries it lists labour. What is that? I haven’t seen it anywhere else.
8. Verbose Bug, Crash and Nitpick descriptions
- Playing as Tarth the Kingdom description still describes Lady Irane as the leader. I am assuming she is the default leader if you are playing as another Kingdom or Empire. This might be a unique instance as I skimmed the other Kingdom and Empire profiles and none of them even named the leaders.
- Sometimes the next unit doesn’t automagically get select once the current unit is done all its moves. The first time was early in the game I’m not sure what happened (it should have moved from my Soverign to Janusk). The second time though it was after a battle, I killed some wolves and the army ran out of moves but it did not move to the next unit afterwards.
- Unit path finding does not take the most optimal route. I’m labeling this a bug because it is detrimental to the game as units waste their moves. An example to clarify. A normal unit has two moves. It is given a destination which is two moves away. Now it can move through a tile of grassland and then once more into that destination tile. However sometimes (or all the time?) it moves into a tile that requires more than one movement such as a forest and gets stuck. I do like how it uses the city in its calculation though.
- Constructing resource buildings next to city enters the city’s construction queue. I’ve seen this reported on the forum before. Simply if the building that is being constructed to extract the resource is adjacent to a city, it enters the queue and must either wait for buildings currently under construction or gets backlogged. If the tile is not near a city it will build on its own. Related to this is the fact it uses up one of the limited tiles that a city can have (I have not run into this but I saw it reported)
- Able to cast strategic spells when out of moves. I don’t know if this is a bug or not but it seemed to be in a gray area to me so I listed it. Basically I moved my Sovereign towards a city and when it was out of moves I cast Brilliance on the city.
- Tool tip text spills out of tool tip window. Seen it happen for prestige in the city details (bottom left when you select a city) and for the dominate skill that some champions have. May occur elsewhere that I just haven’t noticed yet.
- Female soldier’s boobs clip through the armor “Leather Shirt”. Don’t judge me! I was playing Tarth and selected Leather Shirt as the armor and the boobs clip through in the graphics. Mmmm a strong girl from the Kingdom of Tarth clad all in leather ... err ...
- Clicking on a building I am restricted from building in the create building window does not update the details. To recreate this click on a city that has a building it cannot create (for me it was a market that couldn’t be built on a level 1 city). When you click on it, it won’t update the details until you click on another building then click on the restricted building again.
- Cannot teleport Sovereign directly into a city. This may be a design decision but it just surprised me when I couldn’t do that.
- After teleporting the Soverign the “Create Settlement” icon reappeared on Soverign’s action bar (it is actually the equipment icon). May have already been like that but I didn’t notice until then. It also has no tooltip for it.
- Sometimes clicking to move a unit makes it move somewhere else. The unit moves into a different tile than I had selected (or at least thought I selected). Happens quite often to me. I am using the right click button on the mouse to move.
- Tactical battle UI displaying HP updates before the battle animation finishes. Happens every time. When in a fight when attacking a unit (or being attacked) watch the different places the unit’s HP is displayed and it will update before the animation is done and the damage notification pops up. The three places I noticed was in the unit card when hovering the mouse over it, the progress bar at the bottom and the unit list at the right (for the enemy).
- Cannot click on another city while the build improvements window is open. Simple to recreate just open the construction window and try to click on another city, you can’t! You can click on an empty tile to deselect however.
- Double clicking in the textboxes when designing units causes strange highlighting issue. Regarding the unit title and unit quote. Sometimes half the textbox would become highlighted, sometimes the whole thing would be highlighted and you can’t unhighlight it.
- When trying to select a unit after clicking on a city, instead of selecting the unit it will zoom back to the city. Not sure how to re-create this consistently...it just seems to happen to me randomly
- Interface remains zoomed when moving to next unit when accepting quest. I moved into a hut with my Sovereign’s army’s last move and accepted the Maggie’s Ring quest it then zoomed to where I am supposed to go to get the key to the chest. Then since my unit ran out of moves it then zoomed to the next unit, still very close. This is ultra trivial but it confused me for a second so I thought I’d include it here.
- Newly hired champion had build settlement icon in place of the equipment icon in action bar. I had just hired a champion and when I clicked on the action bar it had the settlement button there. Probably related the previous bug when I teleported my Sovereign
- Auto-resolve suicides weak units. Wasn’t sure if I should put this in bugs or nitpicking. In any case I had a pioneer being escorted by a relative strong unit (combat rating 38). I used this army to attack a bear with a combat rating of under 10. Since there was such a high discrepancy it auto resolved without even asking me...and the pioneer was killed. I was not amused!
- Entered a quest hut with Sovereign and nothing happened. This hut was in the influence radius of my capital if this matters. I don’t know what else could have affected it as I don’t think I had done a quest for that tile.
Crashes

Nitpicks
- New available resource notification in the event list is nice but may be overlooked. The first time I noticed it was because of the big exclamation mark on the terrain tile and then happened to glance at the event list which included it as well. A suggestion I have is to have the event notification appear in the centre of the screen first (maybe a bit bigger with text about what happened) and then it would shrink and go to the event list. This is for any event really not just the resource one but it was new so I picked on it.
- A notification to end turn when all units have moved would be nice to have. This is for when you uncheck force end turn in the options (I think that is what it is called). Shamelessly referring to Civ 4 as to what I am trying to describe.
- Display the resource bonus on the resource type encyclopedia entry, not just the resource building entry. A number of clicks issue, why do I have to click twice to see what this terrain is going to give me? Super nitpicky but if it is thought to be important enough to be fixed I would expect it to be simple.
- Cost/Benefit ratio for some equipment doesn’t make sense to me. I was equiping a unit and comparing the different armors I could give it. It just seems strange to me that to buy a Padded Cuirass costs 3 gildars and 1 material and gives the unit 3 defense. However both the Padded Armlets and Padded Greaves cost 5 gildars and 5 materials each and give only 1 defense. Same ratio for the Soldier’s Cloak which costs 10 gildars and 10 materials and gives 2 defense. I haven’t gotten any farther with the equipment so I don’t know if this continues or not.
- There are no encyclopedia entries for the different treaties. Either that or I couldn’t find them. They might be self explanatory but it would still be nice to have a description on what they do and maybe some lore behind it.
- Need feedback on how to use caravans. If I didn’t read about it on the forum I wouldn’t have not known how to use caravans. I would probably stumbled on how to use it through trial and error but if there was some way of letting the user know how to use it (when the first caravan is built Janusk tells you what to do). Or maybe it is in the game and I just haven’t noticed.
- A city list with important details for quick reference would be nice. Once again shamelessly referring to Civilization’s city list which I find to be very useful. I wanted to see what all my cities were building and I had to click on each one. Another time I wanted to see how close my cities were to leveling up and once again I had to click on each city one by one. Yes I was being lazy but I was also used to being able to glance at all the information at once.
- Needs feedback for invalid actions. The specific action I was trying to do was cast Brilliance on my city. I eventually got the spell cast but if there was something more than just a red highlight vs a green highlight I wouldn’t have to get frustrated moving my unit around trying to find a sweet spot to cast the spell. This follows for all actions that can be invalid in some circumstances.
- When a city levels there needs to be a way to see the city’s details. It would be nice to be able to see the city stats so I know which upgrade to pick. When I have 3 or 4 its fine but if I continue to grow I’m not going to remember off the top of my head what a certain city’s specialty is.
- Can easily lure enemy melee units to their death in tactical battles. In my opinion having the ability to attack twice while having only one movement is overpowered. What I do now is just sit back let the enemy move towards me and each of my units gets two attacks without fear of a targeted attack (if I can kill a unit in one or two hits). It’s even worse when I can one hit the enemy units because then I can kill two in one round. Yes if I can one hit a unit I should be able to win the fight easily, however now I rarely take any damage at all.
- Inability to combine treaties when negotiating. This may be a design decision. I wanted to include a non-aggression pact with a technology treaty because the AI’s values of the treaties would have balanced out. May be a design decision to stop exactly what I was trying to do...but it makes sense (sign this trade agreement and we won’t attack you).
- Not intuitive how to perform diplomatic actions with minor factions. At least it wasn’t intuitive to me, I had to ask on the forums. My first thought was to go to the foreign relations tab in the Kingdom information window. I never thought to click on the faction’s units to start negotiating. Also they seem sort of dull as they sit around and do nothing the whole game.
The End. I hope this helps.
