Low graphical performance over various 3D objects from the map

Low graphical performance over various 3D objects from the map

I actually noticed this during beta 4, but it was the first time I noticed buildings, on my new laptop, so I thought they just needed some optimizing, which would be done for the release.

I get a constant max framerate (limited to 90 in my case, for example) over all the map, on a bare ground, units for example are ok. But as soon as a small 3D object enters the field, it decreases. A tree in the corner? 45 fps. A city (not a big one, just the first settlement) visible? 15 fps.

I tried to change the various settings, deactivated soft lighting, AA, shadows, resolution, it's still doing the same. It works good on the cloth map, without a problem, though, as there are no such elements.

Now I would understand such thing on my older laptop, but I'm surprised to see this on the new one. Specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

So I'm guessing there is somehow a problem with drivers (though latest ones from ATI), or at least some incompatibility somewhere. Because the objects are nice, the cell shading effect too, but it's hardly something to bring this computer to its knees.

ps: I understand that a game like this doesn't need to run at 90fps. But 15-20 is actually unpleasant on the long term.

Edit: To make a complete (more or less) analysis, I tried at a high and low configuration, similar effects:

LOW Settings:

- Video Configuration

- Over a city: 20 fps

- Without objects: 138 fps

HIGH Settings:

High settings - city

- Video Configuration

- Over a city: 18 fps

- Without objects: 80 fps

So it doesn't seem to be related to the video settings. I also tried windowed, same.

It is really related to these 3D objects, as shown by these two other screenshots:

- Full zoom, empty ground: 99 fps

- Same place, just a bit higher to have one tree in the view: 29 fps

So far, the only thing which seems to improve performance is to force the game to run only on one core (physical one, so two virtual cores on Core i3/5/7), as suggested by thebigJ_A in this answer.

It should be the other way around, clearly, so maybe it's giving a hint on where the problem could be. Note that this doesn't solve the performance problem, there is still a big decrease on framerate when passing on cities, but less than when the game is authorized to run on all cores. I noticed however that doing this since the 1.05 version makes the sound choppy, probably because it was expecting to run on a different core to begin with.

I'll ask this. Have you guys reproduced this over there at SD? From what I've read here, the game doesn't use the GPU at all unless you set affinity, and even then, it's only using a portion. So it seems to me, who admittedly has little specific understanding of such things, that for some reason the CPU is doing all of the graphics calculations, or most of them w/ affinity set. How does that happen for some of us, but not all? What's different about us?

Is everyone here using ATI? (I'm tired and don't feel like reading back through the whole thread.)
I'm using an nVidia 9800GTX+ that is having the same issue

Guys, try disabling the in-game cursor and use hardware one. I just did it and it basically solved my problem with stuttering scrolling. Fps over cities is better too. The fluid scroll is so gamechanger lol, everything is fluid just how it's supposed to be.

Hi all.

Just had a DX crash after about 1 hours playing, when i alt-tab out to windows for the 5th time during 1 hour, using FRAPS i had 60-90 Fps at the start and then slowing to around 25-35 fps when zoomed in and over 200fps on the cloth map view during all this session.

No other crashes except the overhead text on my city dissapeared after about 30min's after the 2nd alt-tab.

I had a look at GPU-Z and it shows the GPU load to be max 7% during this play session.CPU load is 100% and the Ram is around 78% used

System spec is:

i7 860

Asus EVO P55

4GB Dominator 1600 Ram

ATi 5870 HD

Intel SSD G2 80 GB

Win7 64 bit

Not overclocked anything and using all the latest drivers (ATI 10.8)

Also here is the error logs:

I found this to be odd.... Framerates were good until the first tactical combat of the game... The tactical screen was completely fogged out so I used auto-resolve to get through it, then when returning to the map framerates became so slow as to become unplayable.

my system is a little more dated than most, here's the specs:

AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+

2048 RAM

NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX

Windows XP Pro

DirectX 9.0c

Video drivers are up-to-date (7/9/10)

I have never been able to see anything in the tactical battle screen, always fogged out  X(

No effect.

As you can see this view runs on 9 frames per second. I honestly believe it should be more on my rig.

win7 home 64bit

core2duo e6550 2,33ghz

3gb ram

ati radeon hd4870 with 10.7 catalyst

1680x1050 with no goodies.

If a resolution change does not affect the FPS, then the GPU is clearly not fill-rate limited and probably not bogged down by vertex processing either for this app. It's probably extremely CPU bound.

Too many draw calls or blocking read/writes to textures/GPU buffers or heap allocations every frame maybe? Common problems I suppose..

Can't wait for the fix though so that I can play Elemental proper!

(I'm a game dev too and bored at work)

Hm, yeah, seems I was a bit too optimistic about fps rise. I think it's around the same, but disabling game cursor at least solves the stuttering scrolling problem which for me is a big improvement.

This didn't work for me but i have read it has worked for others.  For what ever reason Elemental seems to be using barely any gpu if at all and not using my cores right.  Stardock knows about it thanks to this thread so in a bit i would say we will see a patch.

Hm, got to play some more and it seems more 'help-texts' have been added to the campaign/tut? Could be my imagination.

More to the topic- the latest ATI tray tools running on my system while Elemental attempts to launch results in Elemental.exe appearing and disappearing within 5 secs, sometimes flashing a black screen. As soon as I quit ATI tray tools the game is launchable. This is with default settings for the tray tools. Was going to use its hardware monitor graphs as those are quite easy to read.

Here's hoping that we will get an update on the issue today.  I really hope that this is solved by the weekend...

Tell me about it , not able to play a game u paid for :( , hopefully our feedback will help them figure this out

I believe that if the game becomes very slow after a tactical battle where the screen went white then that is a different issue and one that has been resolved internally.

If the issues continue with a save game (reloading elemental in between) then that is the issue that is still under investigation.

Neil, are people working on the issue currently and is there hope of a fix this week?

Or since the release of Day 0 patch, have most been given the week off and we won't see any patches until next week?

And once again I will ask, can you reproduce the issue that most of us are having, extremely low fps and a severely underutilized GPU?

Another one here with low performance over cities.

System Specs

Intel i7 920 2.6GHz
EVGA x58 SLI LE (BIOS 73)
3x2 GB Mushkin Redline
2x OCZ Vertex Turbo 60GB RAID0 (FW1.6)
MSI Nvidia GTX 295 (258.96)
Creative X-FI Titanium FATALITY (2.17.8)
3x Dell 2209WA (1680x1050@59Hz)
Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Edition
Antec Signature 850w
Windows 7 x64 Pro.

ps. only playing at 1680x1050 on 1 monitor, despite the hardware setup listed.

Here is a log of GPU-Z showing 0 to 1 % load on my GPU when running the game. http://pastebin.ca/1925943

and my debug http://pastebin.ca/1925946

Tactical battles run fine for me, I have around 45 FPS during the battle. After the battle FPS go back to the normal 8 FPS which is what I had before the battle. FPS are only bad for me when I view a city. Looking at the GPU-Z log I would guess that the GPU is not being used at all.

The tactical battle issue is defintely a different issue.  I actually don't have that issue on my machine...

Reloading saves and restarting elemental does nothing to improve FPS for me...

Yes, tactical battles work fine for me too. This really low FPS when viewing 3D objects on the map is really the only problem of this kind that I've encountered, and it's a constant in every game all the time for me. It's just not using the GPU :(

well I decided to give the clothmap a spin and sadly i hit yet another wall , my fps is all good and all in clothmap whoever when i get the first tech screen , my fps drop to 1 - 0 so i have to close , no matter if I close the tech window or press escape no matter what i do the fps remains 1-0 ^^

Oh gawds, every time this thread is updated, I'm hoping it's the devs coming to post that a new patch is out for this bug.

Stop replying and getting my hopes up goddamnit!

:D

well is not only the tech menu  that slow me down , but when i open the menu for tech / diplomacy or anything in there

after changing resolution to a lower one i can use the menus without the fps  ^^
