New player question about economy

Hello,

I spent the better part of about 6 to 8 hours watching some "let's play" videos on Gal Civ II Dreadlords to try to get an idea for how certain things function in the game.

One of my questions however is money.  Am I correct that money for my empire only comes through:

1. Taxing my population

2. Trade between myself and the AI

3. Someplace else that I can't remember.

For some reason I thought it came from factories so in my first game I built factories like a madman, but went bust pretty quick.

Thanks,

1) yes, high tax means unhappy people

2) yes, 8 to 9 trade routes

3) It's trade centers, (stock exchanges), my money making buildings.

To make a money making planet this you need high PQ like planet (if not around a PQ 12 or better will work but you need a few of them)  around purple sun that gives you PQ22 or higher. I start off with one factory then a star port, bio-thingy, recruiter building and advanced farm plus food distributor (16 billion to about maybe 19 or 20 billion pop) with two happy-making buildings and taxes around 60% or your choice and rest of the spaces put stock exchanges and if you lucky to get Enco boom, you can bring home about 700,000 to 1,000,000 bc a week (normal is around 500,000 bc)

If you have any other questions that I can or can't answer I will find some one that can or give you a link to go to.

Actually, the third source of money is tourism income, which is based off your cultural influence. It's usually not worth a lot, but there is a random event that doubles tourism income.

Economy buildings like market centers increase the amount of money you make from taxes; they don't generate it in and of themselves.

Oh, and you can also extort it from the AI, but generally they won't give you much unless you're much more powerful (and of course, it hurts relations).

You can also get money from the AI by trading tech for cash and this can be a good source of income as well as benefiting relations.

To get the best deals it is best if you have a diplomatic advantage over the AI but it's not absolutely required. However you do really want to make sure that if you sell one tech to one AI that you sell it to *all* the AI's that you can talk to. That way you get the best return on your tech and you don't give the AI's a chance to sell the tech you sold to them to someone else. For a mundane tech you may only get 50bc's but clearly it's better to get 50bc's from 8 different AI's than it is getting it from only one.

Also because diplomacy factors so highly into this only in the most unusual and desperate of circumstances will I sell an AI a tech that has a diplomatic bonus.

But the real way to make money is taxes and as mentioned above taxes cause a decrease in approval which cause a decrease in pop growth so morale bonus and morale buildings are just as important as economic bonus and buildings. Always try to get any econ and morale resources as soon as possible. But usually I find that I start to make money once I finish off the morale branch of the tech tree and build a few morale improving wonders like Harmony Crystals, Ultra Spices and Virtual Reality Modules.

You can also close economic alliances (not sure about the exact name) with the AIs though you usually need to offer them quite a bit to get it.

As mentioned before, don't hesitate to post more questions...

There are no economic alliances in DL.

In TA, playing Yor, econ is always a fight.  You can always count on the minor races for help.  Early, as someone else on here noted, a trade of 999 influence for 100ish bc is nice, and you can always sell diplomatic relations and trade (to your future benefit) for more money.  Later on, build up some stuff like aphrodisiac, micro-bots, etc., and techs that everyone else already has, and trade to minors for econ and research treaties.  They're down.  Just don't trade them any techs that can hurt you.   After awhile, it's worth it to trade basic logistics, even planetary invasion, for a steady cash flow.

Again, the OP is about DL - not the expansions. Any help should be directed to that game.

Which we didn't get since this is the Twilight of the Arnor sub-forum ;)

Well I like some of the advice the only they said that wouldn't work is economy treaty the rest is in dread lords. I would recommend not selling techs I would rather take a production loss I do remember to sell the tech I trade to otheer ai's though. High approval is good that's my method one per planet. If your planet makes less than when it spends build more markets. If your planet makes more. buy other stuff. One difference I learned from other blogs is have an approval of 70% or better will increase your money later for a better economy in the future, even if you have to lower production right now. Half of a hundred is better than all of ten. start building right away it works better in the end game even if it slows you down right now. Good economics also work

The approval threshold is 76%, not 70%...

Other than that, fully agree :)

I thought it was 75% as the next lower approval region ends at 74%.

One thing I would have to say about the dread lords is this as nice as a game as it is. I would go to them for advice rather than asking a bunch of people who probably have not played the dread lords in some time.

At exactly turn 100, Make economic and research treaties.  Then, trade tech for economic treaty with other races. I traded extreme colonization for econ treaties and some extra research treaties. I have econ treaties with 4 races, and research with 3.
