Just finished downloading and just started the game, 2 out of the 3 times i've tried to start a single player campaign the game crashes. The only time I've gotten into the campaign I couldn't fight the widows on the map. What logs do you want to see so you can maybe see whats happening?
If the game crashed, there should be a file in a directory called \programdata\stardock\emenetal
It would be a .zip file that has all the info in it.
In addition, in your documents\my games\elemental there is a debug.err that would tell us a little more about your computer.

Pretty sure the crash is from alt tabbing in game then if you go back to the menu and go start a single player campaign it crashes almost every time.
As for the not being able to fight the widows in single player, i have the swords icon above them but am unable to actually fight.
Did you buy and equip weapons? There should be messages directing you to that effect when you start your city.
