I am amazed at the alacrity with which President Barack Hussein Obama wades into controversies, stirs up debate and quietly retreats as if everything is back to normal.
I have to ask you why? Why are you surprised? Could it be your perception of him as being so intelligent? And how could someone so smart make such mistakes?
I think eventually the first ammendment issue wil die down and better sense will prevail.
It is not a first amendment issue. No one is claiming they cannot build there (and as you point out, neither is Obama). It is about sensitivity. No one is suing the muslims over the mosque (or the city zoning board). They are however using another aspect of the first amendment - freedom of speech - to voice how they feel it is insensitive to the memories of those who died there.
In the end, Muslims can voluntarily move the mosque (they have refused to consider that), the citizens of NY can enact a law banning religious structures so close to the site (it is called zoning and is perfectly constitutional), or the zoning commission can reverse its ruling, declaring the building currently on the site to be historical and thus ending the controversy.
As for eventually die down - eventually we all are dead. The question is not "eventually" but how long is the "eventually".
