New game by Irrational Games: BioShock Infinite

I'm sure some of you heard of the mysterious new game that is in the making at Irrational Games. As a die hard System Shock 2 fan and an avid admirer of Ken Levine, I am really looking forward to the reveal today.

We only know about a work title "Project Icarus" and that there is a website with an infinity symbol. Some say it might be a remake of Xcom, newest rumors say something about "BioShock above the clouds". Now, BioShock was a very good FPS, but not as fascinating as System Shock 2 in my opinion. Nevertheless, I am curious and we will find out soon enough: 1:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Must be a lot of peeps trying to view the vid. I can't get it to start. Synopsis doesn't sound that special, but really want to see the gameplay first.

yeah, that was really disappointing... The game is probably fine, but THIS is the big reveal? Meh... After 3 years of work, you'd think it was something else, given when Bioshock 2 came out.

yeah- same crap, different package....Not to mention keeping Bioshock in the title (so that people don't go "What's that game like?): C'mon, call it Airshock or Aeroshock, not just Bioshock: Random word.

Bioshock 1 was amazing. I cannot wait for this.

Would you be so kind as to enlighten me... What was so "amazing" about that boring, dumbed down System Shock 2 rip-off (apart from the art direction, which admittedly was pretty solid)? I'm genuinely curious.

You need to think back to 2007. It was a world where the first 3/4 of the year pretty much sucked. Bioshock was an original IP with a great setting, great characters and an amazing narrative. I'm not saying the gameplay was amazing and I'm not comparing it to System Shock 2. What other dev studios produced a game with more intellectual property creativity than Irrational did?

Reminds me of skydiving :O . I really enjoyed the 1st game (didn't bother with the sequel produced by a separate studio).

My gripe with BioShock was not the actual game itself. Compared to the usual FPS stupidity we are served with, BioShock is unique and thoughtful. Admittedly, it was and still is a very good game. The thing that disappointed me was the marketing. I loathed how they utilized the well deserved credits they got for System Shock 2 (unfortunately, most of it in retrospect) for a game that was basically a rehash of their past ideas and played less sophisticated in comparison. Even more deceiving was the overblown claim that they will bring never before seen AI and meaningful moral dilemmas to the plate that would change the way FPS will be played in the future. Obviously, that never happened.

I don't begrudge the success and money they got from BioShock, I recognize it as a late justice for the awesome work they delivered before, I just hoped that Ken Levine would've been able to channel his great ideas into something more out of the box.

System Shock has a boring and cliched concept (rogue AI). Bioshock had a wonderful character and narrative structure that let you discover who you were ALONG with the character and with a bumpy ride, and with fantastic atmospheric tension and memorable bosses and environments.

Sounds like uncharted... in the sky.

UnchartedShock?

As cliched as the concept of a rogue AI might be, Shodan is by far the more menacing and interesting villain compared to the boring douche in BioShock, because they added something fresh to it. It's quite telling that I already forgot his real name... The rest of the bickering bunch didn't really help either.

The character and narrative structure of the two System Shock installments blows BioShock right out of the water. BioShock had a fantastic climax with the "Would you kindly?" scene, but went straight downhill afterwards.

Yeah, System Shock 1/2 is up in my top top list of ultimate top lists of ultimate top items (games).

BioShock is on my list of "meh, pretty good I guess... for a console" games.

I saw the screens and trailer on some site and they were tagged with "Project Icarus" and i was excited. Then I saw the name Bioshock, and became considerably less excited.

Wow.  Annualising Bioshock.  I expected them to at least call it something different.  Bioshock stood on it's own merits and became a very successful IP because it was simply good.  Bioshock 2 cashed in on that, and delivered a bit of an encore.  Not essential, but not terrible to the point of burning the franchise to ground... or tying balloons to it and floating it into the fucking sky, either.

Bioshock 4: Modern Warfare
Bioshock 3DS
Bioshock: Warriors of Rock
Bioshock 6: Galactic Adventures
Bioshock 7: Wings of Liberty
Bioshock Online
Bioshock IX
Bioshock X: Redemption
Bioshock X-2

Yet another good game turned into a franchise and becomes a shadow of it's former self.

Uh, this is coming out in 2012? And play it before you judge?

Fair point, I should've used 'interating' rather than 'annualising'.
And I don't have to play it, I know exactly how it will play: it'll be a poor mix of generic run-and-gun gameplay with selectable ammo types, and under-developed 'Ability' upgrade mechanics that serve more as dot points on the back of the box than as gameplay expanding tools.

This game screams board room, cash in thinking.  "Look, this one takes place in the SKY! See, it's different from being under the Sea!".  Instead of trying to run with any kind of continual plot or story line (in this case, the pricipal character would actually have been Rapture itself and it's Character Arc) they've gone in the worst possible direction and created the Bioshock 'Formula' to milk.

[Escapist City] created by [Political Ideal] is torn assunder by conflict with [Opposite Political Ideal] from within.  [Player] enters the conflicted [Escapist City] due to [Plot Device] and must battle against the twisted Citizens of [Escapist City] to [Goal].  Player will gain [Ability Currency] to allow them to upgrade [Ability Name (like Plasmids)] to allow them to become more effective killers.
Throw in the obligatory plot twist and fetch quests, bump up the visuals a notch, whack a AU$120.00 price tag on it and you've got 'THE NEXT AMAZING BIOSHOCK GAME'.

And people wonder why Games are never taken seriously as an art form!  Every time we come close to something amazing, something that could be - one day - considered the medium's 'Citizen Kane', we get thrown sequel after sequel after spin off after re-hash until no one can cares and the original's memory is long since dead, buried, dug up, assaulted, re-buried, burnt, pissed on and then resurrected via pagen magic.

Zehdon, you have to play it before you render judgment. Ken Levine has a good idea of what he's doing. I won't take opinions seriously until we all do. See you in 2 years. =P

Besides, the studio is 20 minutes from my house. I got to root for the home team.

Yeah, because THAT doesn't happen in the movie industry at all. <_<

The ONLY reason im not actually insulting this game (unlike AlienShock and RetroShock the other games their publisher is working on) is because of Ken. Kenny boy. Kenzor.

He made Theifs and some system shocky and some swat 4s, all top games so Im going to buy it, play it, finish it but I already don't like the art style (which he loves it appears - listen to GWJ podcast). Hes already won basically, so it BETTER be good.

Not terribly excited about this game. BioShock had an intriguing atmosphere, but there was no good game behind it. It was a generic shooter in a pretty wrapper. The plasmids were a nice touch, but the novelty wore off quickly :P

The only "thoughtful" FPS I'm looking forward to at the moment is Deus Ex: Human Revolution. If it captures the feel of the original, it'll blow everything out of the water :P

I'm beginning to wonder if anyone on these forums even likes video games. First no one likes Bioware games, now people slam one of gaming's landmark games.

BioShock is far from a "landmark" game. It just got so much attention because it tried being a story-driven modern FPS instead of a plain shooter - and it did that mostly by just having you look around for old recordings. The gameplay remained a plain and generic shooter. Like I said, generic shooter in a pretty wrapper. It just stood out because none of the other games tried to focus on the atmosphere or story.
