Cathedral of Valor

Let me begin by saying this game has held my attention for a little over 2 years now. I've never enjoyed playing a game as much as Gal Civ 2 because of its depth and replay value. In fact, just recently, I discovered that I love playing as the Arcean Empire. The idea of a noble race that uses might to make right appeals to me. I've gotten to the point that I can play them passably well on tough (if I can get lucky enough during the initial colonization phase and if I can get enough research going.) I usually become unstoppable in a few years. In the last game I played, I didn't even have to research any defenses because one salvo of missiles with the Super Warrior ability made short work of everything I encountered.

I'm just a little frustrated that the Cathedral of Valor's soldiering bonus is still broken. Does anyone know (if anyone is even out there anymore...) whether there's a work around for this issue? Can I mod a file to make it do something different?

Thanks.

Has it been two years already? 8C
Still a god game, though!

There are two ways that comes to mind but the details is something you have to figure out for yourself, sorry about that.

  • Edit the files directly. The files you need to fiddle with is probably in the
    "
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\GalCiv2\Twilight\Data\English"-directory.
They are all in XML and should be easily opened with notepad and the content therein should be rather self explanatory.
  • Use one of the editors. They are all located in the
    "
C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\GalCiv2\Twilight\Tools"-folder. Figuring them out is another matter.

As for witch file to edit, my best gues would be the PlanetImprovements.xml-file in the
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\GalCiv2\Twilight\Data\English"-directory.

Best I can do, hope it helps.
Keep us posted on the progress, the few of us that´s left have to stick together ;)

Progress thus far:

Using the GC2ImprovementEditor, I tinkered with the Cathedral of Valor improvement. It seems that structures classified as "normal" cannot provide civ wide bonuses. When I made the CoV a "Super Project" or a "Galactic Achievement," the bonus works as intended, but that sucks because I can only build one. >_<

Unless someone has an idea for a workaround, here's what I'm thinking of sticking with:

Cathedral of Valor

- 400 build cost (up from 300. Still no maintenance cost.)

- +15% to Soldiering.

- Removed 33% planetary defense bonus.

Since I can only build ONE Cathedral now, I decided to futz with the space cannon too (tech available before the cathedral.)

Space Cannon

- Same build cost, but only 2 bc maintenance cost instead of 3 since I'll probably be using these on my worlds instead of the Cathedral.

- 33% Planetary Defense down from 50%

- +15% Planetary morale instead of +10%.

Does this mod seem fair? I'm going to test it out to see what I think. The only thing that bothers me is that the CoV is available so early on that it could give the Arceans an unfair early soldiering advantage. Thoughts?

Well, I never played that race before.
Embarrassing - I know!

As far as the unfairness in the early game goes, I don't see that as much of a problem since you cant use soldiering bonuses without enemy contact.
In my experience (or maybe its just my play style) it takes quite a while before you make "first contact" with your "new-found friends" and start to "negotiate trade terms".

If you are concerned with the balancing maybe you should just use some of the old XML-files instead so that the game reverts back to when you liked the balance.

That Space Canon thing I don't understand, though. What do you mean when you say build on planets?
I thought they were ship components.

The Arceans have a technology available early on called "Planetary Fortification" which allows construction of a "Space Cannon" on your worlds which provides a 50% bonus to planetary defense and a 10% bonus to morale. Who doesn't feel a bit happier with a giant laser gun pointed at the sky? The next tech "Cathedral of Valor" Gives a structure which is supposed to add a 33% bonus to planetary defense and a 2% civ-wide bonus to soldiering. Since it doesn't actually give the soldiering bonus, all it does is give you a more expensive structure that provides a smaller bonus to defense. It has no maintenance cost, but still... That's just dumb.

So playing a game with an early 15% soldiering bonus didn't make me nearly as godly as I had anticipated. I figured that if I could simply research Planetary Invasion as early as possible, and if I combined that with my innate soldiering ability and the 15% from the Cathedral of Valor that I could be an unstoppable early invader. Fighting against the Yor on tough, however, did not go as anticipated. I had a total soldiering ability of 35, the Yor had an ability of 0, and yet I struggled to make headway invading their worlds. 1b of mine would kill maybe 2-3b of theirs. Maybe a bug, I don't know.

Hmm, I see your point.
Did You remember to change the bayonets to can openers? ;)
It does seems odd though, have you checked the technology level at the invasion screen?
Tech factors in as well as I'm sure You know. In fact, that's how I normally win my battles
