how do i edit an icon in skin studio?

i may be missing something really obvious here.

i have never really used skin studio before, prefering to experiment with WB and OB skins in notepad.

i have an ico file from a friend for a program i am writing. i have added the ico file to the program (MS visual studio .net) and edited the icon in visual studio.

i have just found that this icon file contains 6 images, but i have only edited the 32*32*16m image.

following the recent announcement that Skin Studio supports icon editing i installed it (ver 3.96b) via stardock central

i go file menu -> new -> skin or icon
give it a name and select icon

under the template tab i found an "Open file" button, so i clicked it, hoping i could open my existing icon, or at least get some of the info out of it.

the open dialog lists ico files fine, but when i select my ico file and press open i get the error message:

Cannot assign a TIcon to a TBitmap.

/me feels seriously out of my depth!

i tried the "open existing file" button, but there seems no way to open a single ico file.

/me decides to leave icons for now, and tries to work out why my program keeps on crashing instead

Did you save your edited icon as a seperate file or did you save it over the original icon file that your friend gave you?

Raithe, i have tried both, but this doesnt seem to make any difference. the only option i can find (so far) in visual studio is to save as an ico file.
