Coming back to some strange results...

Alright, well I just decided to play a game of GalCiv II again as I haven't played in quite some time.  I loaded up Twilight as I hadn't played this version before, only to come upon some really strange things happening in my game.

The first thing that happened was an enemy space station was invisible.  I tried to take a defense point only to find that this invisible space station was there.  On a reset, it appeared, so not that big of a deal.

Next I noticed that many of my ships were displaying an attack of 1 when they should have an attack of 2.  It seems that, as I picked Altareans with a -20% in attack, they seem to be losing an attack value of 1.  From what I recall in past games, these +20% or -20% don't really take effect until later as the game would round off the numbers.  Am I wrong here in what I remember or did something change in Twilight?  After all, an attack of 2 should not be rounded down to a 1 with only a -20% attack (or -19% to be specific, in my case).

Finally, I received a very odd battle result just a second ago.  The Yor decided to attack me while they had some freighters in my area.  I then go and start destroying them.  The first couple times I send a single 1 attack ship to take them out; no problem.  The freighters do have an attack of 1, due to a decree I'm pretty sure.

But then, one freighter moves by a small fleet of mine (total 4 ships with a combined 4 missile attack 2 missile defense).  I just take the fleet over to attack and it moves to the battle mode.  Now, get this, during the battle, not a single one of my ships scored a hit after a few rounds.  I'm confused and so just decide to hit done and find my entire fleet gets destroyed by a 1 hp 1 missile attack freighter.  I even double checked afterward to make sure this was just a freighter and, sure enough, it was.

Can anyone clarify what's the deal with any of the above?

its been awhile, but the system is set up where there is an attack roll, from 0 to your attack value.  Each ship is also rolled individually (as is each weapon type).  In short, you got extremely unlucky.

Defense works the same way if i recall correctly, with off-type defenses being 0 to 0.25x (where "x" is your total defense value of that type)

Wanna make sure you always score a hit? Take the Luck Bonus. It automatically puts your Base Value at 1/4 of the total instead of 0.  A massive dps increase in reality.  If you take the Luck Bonus and Universalist it puts the base at 50% of your total value.  Any amount of Luck above 50% has no effect.

You are right that it could happen but the chances are so low that I would consider that something is broken rather than the system actually came up with that result.  Let's say the freighter scored a hit every other round (which would the average result).  That would combine for a total of 64 rounds (I had 4 ships with 8 hp each).  For the first 16 rounds there would be 4 shots, the second round of 16 would have 3, third round of 16 would have 2, and the last would have 1.  So, that combines for a total of 160 (16X4+16X3+16X2+16) shots.

With an attack power of 1, each shot has a 1/2 = 50% chance of scoring a hit.  So, for every single one of them to be a miss would be 1/2^160.  That is a 6.84X10^-47% of occurring.  And that's not even taking into account my defense, which would have added more shots into the whole thing.  That is not very unlikely, that is impossible.

Especially when you combine the other two occurrences there.  A disappearing starbase and attack values that don't correspond with what they should be.  Does anyone know why those occurred?

Why should anyone else know what you have so over-abundantly over-analyzed?

Shouldn't you know that answer already?

Which version are you using of TA.  I seem to recall that the European version was a lil more bugged than the US version; though I'm also dredging through memories from like 2 years ago to try and remember lol.

Also, is this from a fresh game or from a saved game.  Saved games, if you load a saved game and then Ctrl-N to restart, or have updated the version, tends to result in a lot of funky behavior.

I will say that I don't think its an actual game issue as the results you are seeing are not something we've (the community, and by that I really mean the players of the Kzinti Empire lol, cuz they're really the only 'resource' group left it seems) come across in "known bugs" for TA (the most well known being "dud" AIs) so its probably a one-time thing, or like I said the result of "corrupted/changed" saved game data.

If all else, send a bug report in.  No promises or anything, but maybe something will come of it.

Well, I'm using V2.03 and it's a direct download from Impulse.

I believe this was loaded up from a quicksave but it may have been a fresh game.

Since you say that none of these were known bugs, I figure it was, as you said, just something corrupt in the game.  I started a new one in hopes that the same sort of thing didn't result.

And I'm guessing the lower than expected attack value calculation is also not correct.  I'll keep an eye out for it again.

Thanks for the info, Silver.
