Why does everyone make icons for XP???

Lord oh sweet Heaven above, why do so many artist use XP icon configurations? I'm on win 98, can I use it noooooooooo...

When I was on Windows 2000 can I use them? Noooooooo...

So many icons look sooooo sweet, oh Lawd, why must theyith bringith false icons?

Please someone convince some of these guys to make icons for the rest of us. (and while your at it, tell them to make custom cursers too, not Cursor XP, just regular cursers)

Ah man!!! But, but... but what about us?

Because making icons on 2k or 9x wont use alpha blended icons and looks hideous.

People want smooth alpha blended icons that XP use.

Same reason goes for your Cursors!

the really obivous reason is that creating icons for the 256 color mode(win9x requirement) is more difficult than creating for the turecolor alpha blended mode (XP standard)

that is to make them look so sweet in 256 colors as they look in XP is a real hell

joe.........  it's 5 times as difficult to make a nice looking icon without  alpha blending, and even then, it's not going to look as nice. Bottom line is, if you must to stick with an obsolete OS, make your own icons........

Joe, if You want some really nice Win9x icons, go to some 'old school' masters:

Copland : http://www.graphicsdesign.org/copland/
Scrow : http://www.virtualplastic.net/scrow/

Unfortunately they are not bigger than 32x32...

I also have the whole D.O.T collection (dark, futuristic icons) on my HD. Mail me if You want them.

Icons for 9x or 2000 are harder in the longrun, much more pixel pushing, if you want them to look good. XP lets you do much better looking Icons, with much less work. IMO.

Really? I thought it ws just as hard to do all the OS's.

How does having alpha transparencies make a icon look better? Other than being able to see through the icon?

I do understand the 256 color restriction can be murder on a icon style.

I don't know much about icon making. I got Icon Forge but I hav't come up with a solid scheme yet.

Thanks for the links c242

What's DOT? Who made them... gimme let me see!

wait... I think I have those icons from Copland and Scrow.

win 98 isn't obsolete, it is a classic

I miss Win98, but mostly because back then I could play my old MS-DOS games easier but other than that I love XP more, (although i pretty much lost many abilities that I like with Win ME >)

joe...Axialis website (makers of IconWorkshop) have a pretty good description of icons, including the differences between XP and 9x icons.

that page is here: http://www.axialis.com/cgi-bin/tutorial?id=whatsanicon

Actually I was going to mention Axialis myself. You know, if your up to it and willing to pay the money - you could always buy the Axialis software and use it to render out win98 icons from the XP versions. Axialis's program actually does most the work for you, but you do have to do some tweaking to get it just right.
