As if I planned this...
One of the servers at work decided to go non-responsive in the mid-morning today... basically the middle of the work day, so of course I get the pleasure of having to reboot/recycle the box at a time that was completely off the regular schedule for any sort of system maintenance. Sure enough, a few users pick up on the loss of the system almost immediately which is to be expected since I wasn't able to send out any advance warning via e-mail (my own e-mail and that of several others is tied to the server that had to be rebooted so we were unable to access our own e-mail). No biggie, just get to say hello to a parade of users all coming to tell me the same thing I already know.
Sure enough though, not long after the server had been rebooted and brought back online, one of the software developer types was standing in the office doorway complaining that he had lost some work during the shuffle because the server had gone down in something didn't go right with the sync of his "My Documents" folder -- said folder that is basically part of the user's roaming profiles and is stored on the server on purpose so that the user's files are all backed up as required.
It's as if the user's think we (my co-workers and I) plan these little unscheduled outtages just to mess with them. As we joked, if we wanted to do this stuff just to mess with users we'd be sure to target just those users and not EVERYONE. IN. THE. ENTIRE. FACILITY.
