Elemental Beta 2 Update Schedule

The weekend is just about here and most of the team is going to get some rest. I’ll be working on the AI since I’m currently the one slowing things up. I have lots of help on the AI this time (in terms of making functions for me) but I still have to do things with those functions.

As mentioned elsewhere, we’re running a bit ahead of schedule at present so it looks like Beta 3 is going to arrive sooner than originally anticipated.

That said, we plan to have weekly updates between now and Beta 3.  The first beta update will mostly deal with the most egregious issues being reported.

Here are some of the things we’ve already found:

  1. Certain nVidia cards with newer graphics drivers (how’s that for a change?) are having lighting issues. If you turn off advanced lighting, that’ll fix it as a temporary workaround.
  2. There are a number of repeatable crash issues we’re already fixed internally that will go into the next public build.
  3. The multiplayer will continue to get love between now and beta 4.
  4. We are anxious to re-enable the sovereign and faction unit designs. Whether that’ll happen next week or not remains to be seen.
  5. Magic, Adventure, and Diplomacy are waiting on some assets from Random House (writing, descriptions, etc.) along with AI design to make use of the spells.

Here are some things to expect:

  1. Gameplay improvements will likely start occurring at an extremely rapid pace.
  2. Random Map work will start to really show up during the beta 2 cycle.
  3. General balance will rapidly improve during the beta 2 cycle.
  4. Stability should dramatically improve as we move through the beta 2 cycle.

Other things of note:

  1. Art assets and visual eye candy are being held back for release purposes. We don’t need “beta testing” of them and it allows the final game to be visually much nicer than what’s in the beta.  Hence, the attack animations and sounds are intentionally gimped.  The same is true of ground textures and other items.

Things we are concerned about:

  1. Memory use.  If you run the game with a /w parameter, it’ll run in a window. We are looking for things that cause the game to run out of memory. There are some memory leaks in there that we’ll be looking to eliminate as quickly as possible.

Have a good weekend!

I can't even get the game to start now Frogboy. It opens and I hear music playing but it refuses to open to screen. (program running on task bar)

Can you give us a bit more detail to set it to run in a window, I cant seem to see from impulse where to do this

Create a short-cut and type /w at the end of the short-cut target in it and that should do it.

You're running ahead of schedule?  That's not how it works in this industry.  But I'll allow it!

Games vs. the AI have already had a nice stability boost for me, as have games vs. other players (though they've all ended from the player dropping...not sure if that's by choice or error).  So, that's been good news so far - plus the 3D engine, which has added a lot of visual interest and that giddy exploration feel we get with these games.

Good luck with the AI coding you're working on.

For the first time I've been able to play for more than 400 turns!! Keep the good work Frogboy!!

Just a question, is the sovereign's Hp supposed to be that low? Because I only get 1 hp per stamina point

Just spent a solid 3 hours playing beta 2, and you totally brought the fun with this one, even though it's totally gimped it's still really fun. Good job!

Had over 1000 population across 3 cities off of only a single fertile piece of land (and around a dozen gardens) which felt about right to me. The cool thing was as my biggest city boomed I didn't have room to build everything in there (which I wanted to, I just wanted to try out all the cool new pretty stuff asap :P ) which means city specialisation is going to be a must as they get bigger. Is there a hard cap on a cities population (the next level up was 1000, but how much further does it go)?

A few thoughts: It's kinda hard to tell what buildings are what just by looking at it's representaion on the tile once a city gets bigger and is getting busy.... Not that it seems to matter where you put most buildings really. I guess the one thing I'd like to see is a bit more feedback or player thought ti be put into where you place buildings in a city rather than just slapping a slum right next to a townhall, which doesn't seem right. I dunno how you make it more meaningful from a gameplay perspective (apart from building toward resources or other geographical points of strategic interest).

Anyway, good job and keep it up!

Been playing since around, oh, five. Off and on. Crashes left and right, but it's still a fun game. I've just adapted by saving a ton. Keeping a nifty journal of various stuffs...

I digress. The game is fun, even at this stage and even with (for lack of a better term) lackluster graphics.

Can't start the game. It just sits at the Splash screen. If I ad the /w at the end it starts the intro vid but it stays minimized.

Good info Brad, I'm about to dive into Beta 2 for some good old fashioned beta testing.

Mr Wardell:

If you've played a modern MMO -- which I'm just about certain I recall you having done -- you'll know exactly what the HUD needs to be. The default should have sufficient information that the player can play the game, but the rest should be entirely the choice of the player -- maybe not to the point of including in game scripting and macro-capabilities and such, but everything else f'sho.

It should be easy as pie to remove an element from the main bar, move it to a different part of the screen and pin it there, resize it, add other stuff to the main bar, make some HUD elements transparent, move the main bar to the side or top or even middle of the screen, and just generally change EVERYTHING.

Everyone does things differently -- the only thing we can all agree on is that we'd like the freedom to do things the way we want to do them.

Will this sort of flexibility be a big sales winner? Probably not. Will it be a huge deal for most fans? Probably not. Would it seriously please a certain segment of players? Almost certainly.

Great update Thanks, chief

This! :)

@frogboy

since many things are already dealt with internally  and others are hold back, what feedback would you like to see most?

it is bit strange, i played some games and most of the issues i was going to report are already known or are purposely there.

Thanks for the update, it's good to get a chance to test this game!

edit: Whoops, this isn't the post where the HUD is mentioned. Moving the feedback on that to the appropriate post now...

As an nVidia user, not very. Their drivers the last six months have been terrible. I'm still using ones from 2009 because they were the last ones that really worked well. It's sad really, drivers used to be an nVidia strength.

I had the same problem.  On Vista, delete the folder \Documents\My Games\Elemental\.  If you on XP, I would guess it's in My Documents somewhere.  That should fix it.
