Brits vote iphone 8th greatest invention ever.

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/05/20/brits-vote-iphone-8th-greatest-invention/

Absurd topic of the day, 4,000 people from britian were polled, and of the 100 best inventions, none had the semiconductor or microchip.  None had radio frequency, a huge invention from Nikola Tesla that everyone uses.  None had the nuclear bomb, or rocket technology, another set of large inventions that changed today.

No one even had electricity generators.

Heres what brits think are important:

Iphone is a greater invention then the combustion engine, toilet paper and toothbrush.

25. Google
...
...
29. Hot Water

27. Email
...
30. Shoes
35. Laptops
36. Fork and knives
...
38. Paper

77. Push-up bra
80. Mascara
81. Hair dryer
82. Facebook
84. Hair dye
87. Calendars

So...  Anybody in this forum thats a brit, is this completely bunk, or do brits spend more time getting their hair and nails done then viewing today's calendar?

actually.. shoes, paper, fork / knives, hot water, email, google.. all of those are actually pretty great inventions that drastically changed the world.  Don't know why you pointed those out.. except for maybe why they're so low?

Would you like a survey about your home country that makes your country look retarded?

Looks more like they told the respondants to name 100 things in under a minute or something. Hell, Hot water isn't even an invention in my book since it occurs naturally easy enough. More like a discovery. The rest looks more like a list of "What inventions can your limited long term memory produce?" or "What items did you use today?". I'm not saying anything bad about the Brits, as I expect any developed country would produce just as absurd a replies.

I think it's clear why I pointed them out, unless you too think Google is a greater 'invention' then hot water...

I'd have to agree with that.

Personally I wonder, what would the responses be for people on:

Windows xp

Windows vista/7 64 bit

Linux

Ipad

Worldwide?  I bet people on Linux and alot on Vista/7 wuld go more for semiconductors while people on ipads would vote for doing their nails.

Hot water is a discovery, just like fire, electricity, timber, etc.  I would imagine it's not higher up on the list simply because many people have that same rationale (hence why fire and electricity aren't even on the list at all).

It existed before we came along.  Otherwise why isn't timber on that list?  We've learned several great uses for it just like for hot water, but it's not an invention.

Yeah, hot water heaters of various designs would be inventions...

What about the nuclear bomb? It's what stopped every country from simultaneously invading one another for the past seventy years.

I mentioned that, but the nuke doesn't stop there as of importance.  The nuclear bomb was then used to send rockets into space.  We owe MANY things to the nuke.

You're talking about nukes and conductors... - what about vaccinations and other medical inventions...?

They'd be on there too, but most inventions of the modern age hinge on electricity and ever-shrinking circuitry.

It's always difficult with this kind of question.  Most people answer with the greatest inventions according to their daily lives while others think about the long term impacts.  You'd need to get really specific to get any kind of meaningful answer.

Personally, the two greatest inventions in the history of the human race, in my opinion, are:
1. Farming.  Changed the human race from bands of nomads to centralised societies and allowed people to think about other things than simply their ability to provide food for the next day.
2. Transistor.  Basis for the microchip and the basis for the entire modern world and the future of the human race as a technologically adept species.

Their ommissions from that list worries me.

As a Brit, I'm highly skeptical as to the level of intelligence of those they surveyed.

Although, it doesn't help thats its an insanely vague and open-ended question. I mean, you could easily find two things which were equally revolutionary and significant in their own specific fields, what about every single invention which led to others on the list?

Having never been surveyed on this side of the pond, I wonder where they find their participants as well.  Perhaps at a soup kitchen?

Hell, Jay Leno finds a multitude of well educated retarded americans on the streets of LA on a weekly basis.

The one big omission I see is plumbing.  Most probably don't know what an outhouse is...the things we take for granted.  Maybe though you have visited a state/national park and had that pleasant experience.

Radio? No radio? Come on! What kind of BS is this. The best combo of inventions is the radio in a car.

I didn't see radio on the list, am missing something.
