Why's the clock dragging today?
I swear the clock seems to be dragging today, at least since the point that I was stuck in traffic on my way into work watching it move far too quickly. Extremes on both ends. When I'm late for work the clock is always moving too quickly, but then once I'm at work it's not bad, except for today where it seems the clock just isn't moving at all.
On the one hand, time really is flying. As I look at the calendar and note that we're already well into the current year, with Memorial day right around the corner. Soon enough July 4 will be here, and not long after we'll be looking at Labor day wondering where the summer went.
July 4 this year will bring some memories for me and my family. Last year at that time my wife and I were returning from our first big vacation together in many years. It was our big 25th anniversary celebration together, and we'd had a pretty good time after a few hiccups to start the trip. Little did we know that not long after things would change for us in major ways.
I'm not sure yet what, if anything, we'll do on the anniversary of her accident. My daughter and son never wanted to see the area where the accident occured, at least not back after it had happened. I drove through the area as I just had to see for myself what the area was like as I tried to wrap my head around what might have happened and why she was where she was at that time. Why had she been going in the direction she was rather than from the other direction where she'd never have had to stop in the roadway to make a turn and questions like that. Of course I'll never know the answers to those questions, at least not in this lifetime.
We've been through that area multiple times since, but not with the fruit and vegetable stand that my wife was going to there and open for business. If my kids saw it, it would likely remind them of what happened, but at this point it's hard to know for sure what they'd really be thinking. They've not talked with me much about how frequently they think of their mother and what happened. I'm sure they both still miss their mom a lot, but they've not said much about it other than at a few times when it would definitely be appropriate to speak up. (Not that any time isn't appropriate, but this was at times when we were specifically memorializing my wife.)
On a somewhat less depressing topic, maybe I should say a little about my TV watching lately. Chuck continues to be fun. I'm glad to see that NBC is bringing it back for at least (if all goes well) 13 episodes. They reserved the right to extend that to a full season, but of course they'll also be watching the ratings for the show. Sadly it continues to air in a deadly time slot for NBC, Mondays at 8PM, up against House on FOX (which I DVR and watch occassionally), Dancing with the Stars on ABC, and CBS' Monday night comedy line-up. It's no surprise to me that Chuck gets beaten in the ratings, but it's a great show and I really want it to stick around for several more years. If it can make it to 5 years and hit syndication (and possibly get more exposure that way), it might make it for several more years, but I'm not holding my breath for any of that to occur.
24 continues to be a total mess. If I wasn't this far invested in the series, I'd have given up on it. Characters are so far from their norms (as we knew them) that nothing is believable at this point. I wish like hell the people that had messed up Star Trek: Enterprise hadn't gotten involved in 24 as their fingerprints are all over the mess that remains. Bleh.
I missed the Celebrity Apprentice (guilty pleasure for me) on Sunday but read the summary of what happened so I wouldn't have to waste 2 hours (well, actualy 1 hour 45 mins if I fast forward through it) time to see what happened. I might have enjoyed watching it, but was busy watching Survivor "live" to see the finale of that on Sunday night.
I still have the finale of The Pacific recorded to watch and might get to see that tonite. I enjoyed that series, though like a few others that I've seen have commented about it, it wasn't quite as good as Band of Brothers was. Perhaps if they had given us a couple more episodes to set up how the cast of characters all came together and/or how they'd gotten to the point that we were introduced to them all (if you can call the start of the series as it was done an introduction), then it might have been a bit more interesting and easier to get into. It does leave you with a good (I think) impression of the hell that generation faced and how hard it was to do the job they did, but then again nothing will ever really put that mark on someone that wasn't there and didn't serve as so many things have never really been talked about or documented.
Baseball also continues to take up much of my TV viewing though I checked out on last nights game early. I'd taken my daughter out for a late dinner and caught a bit of the game on the radio broadcast. At that point I checked in on the game the Nats were behind by 4 runs already so I skipped watching any of their game in favor of watching Chuck and 24 for the night. Hopefully tonite will bring a better result for my favored team.
I guess that's it for now. Hopefully the clock will move quicker tomorrow as I swear I don't type that quickly (quickly yes, which is part of why I tend to get so wordy) and even with all of these words here, the clock still hasn't moved all that much since I started this article.
