GalCiv2 DA crash during loading - win7

ToA runs fine, DA never loads, win7, no debug.err

Hello,

I've recently installed my copy of GalCiv II (I think it was the boxed copy of endless universe) through Impulse and when trying to play DA it will crash during loading. GalCiv2 ToA runs fine with no issues at all, and I've been playing that instead (while ultimately I'd prefer to play Dark Avatar).

Galciv2 DA does not create a debug.err, or gives me any kind of extra info, other than that the application "has stopped working". The steps for me to reproduce the crash:

1. Run DA, click new game

2. Press next a couple times until the loading screen appears.

3. Loading screen shows an empty tool tip window (the window in the center of the loading screen that is supposed to show tips), it also shows an empty loading bar, the bar is simply empty at all times.

4. After 10 seconds or so the game will crash and a windows popup will appear that Da "has stopped working".

 

Someone in a different thread suggested to change the prefs.ini to my native resolution and put fullscreen on 0, for me it's currently like this:

I've also tried running the executable as administrator and in Windows XP SP3 compatability mode, and I have reinstalled and verified GalCiv2 twice.

Currently running win7 and have downloaded and installed the most recent gfx drivers (197.45, was running 197.13 previously). I wouldn't know how many years ago I bought DA and ran it without problems, but it's definitely been a while and I can recall DA working just fine back then, but I might have been running XP at the time.

 

I've tried looking for the stardock program called "Smart Exception" as suggested in a sticky on the falciv forums, however I could find no trace of it on either Impulse or the stardock website. Since DA does not create a debug.err log either, I'll post my dxdiag log in the next post.

Edit: My apologies, it turns out the sticky that mentioned where I should be looking for the debug.err is outdated as the file wasn't located in the program folder but rather in my documents folder along with the prefs.ini etc.

Make sure you use the right one. The line:

Debug Message:  Danger Will Robinson, no Stars!!!!

...indicates that it is the problem that the registry patch resolves. If the problem still persists, please repost a fresh debug.err in case there is another issue.

 

I am running two monitos--could that be our problem?

The OP only has a single display. If you're having trouble, please post your own debug.err file to look at.

Go to My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 (or the DA/TA folders as appropriate), open the file prefs.ini, and make the following changes:

Change
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=768
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=1

To
DisplayWidth=(Your desktop width)
DisplayHeight=(Your desktop height)
ColorDepth=32
Fullscreen=0

Then save the file and start the game.

 

Also, update your video drivers. You're still using pre-Win7-retail versions.

Kryo, I ran the second reg link for 64bit windows, didn't do anything, then afterwards I regged the other one as well, just incase I downloaded the wrong one. Might not have been the smartest move perhaps?

 

Anyhow, the debug.err still says "Debug Message:  Danger Will Robinson, no Stars!!!!" after running those reg files, so I'm not sure if the debug.err is much different, still want me to post a new one?

In that case, please contact [email protected] for further help. It sounds like you've got a bad install or something if setting the language manually still does not allow the game to find the data files.

Tried the 64-bit registry file and also checked prefs.ini for desktop width/height. Still crashes as described in post #1.

Tried the 64-bit registry file and also checked prefs.ini for desktop width/height. Still crashes as described in post #1.

It's possible that EU uses different registry keys, though I can't check as I don't have it myself. If you're comfortable with registry editing, you can look around a bit in the vicinity of the key in the reg file and see if there's an appropriate location to set the language. If not, email [email protected] and they should be able to help. It's pretty clearly not taking the setting though as it's still trying to load from a blank named localized data folder.

I looked around and found an empty "Language" key right beside the ones your GC2langfix_64.reg created in my registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Stardock\Drengin.net\GC2EU

Manuall setting it to "English" did the trick for me and now I can play. Thanks kyro!
