Portal is free...

... for some 10 days.

http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal/

It seems that Valve has made Portal free on Steam. Until May 24th. Also on Macs.

The site's barely up and Steam itself doesn't seem to be able to connect to servers. Too busy o.O

That's crazy!  Portal was / is such an awesome game!  I <3 Steam!

By the way, I understood the offer as "Play for free until 24th May, buy then if you liked to continue playing". Anyone else?

Of course 10 days is more than enough to finish the game, and since i've already played it once on 360, it doens't really hold much replay value for me.

the site has this message:

Play Portal

Act before May 24th to get your free copy of Portal!

So, all you have to do is click on install game and its registered to your account... and per the wording above, I'm pretty sure you own the game outright then.

I can confirm this. I never bought or played Portal (blasphemy, I know), and I clicked on the claim, and it appeared as part of the games list on my account.

Absolutely it's enough to finish Portal. Heck, I finished in about 4-5? hours this afternoon (apparently when you install the Portal demo it preloads Portal for you; only a 124 MB "patch" to play was required, w00t!).

I certainly hope so, because I think that Portal is one freakin' awesome game. I'd be pretty pissed/depressed to have it as my own, and then have it not be mine anymore.

A free game is a free game.  Cheers.

Ah but it requires Steam... I don't want to encourage a monopoly, spend 2 seconds to close out of Steam every time I close Portal, have Steam take up 6-20 mb of my oh so precious ram, and if I don't have the choice to get Portal for free through another client I don't want it!

Oh sorry that thread is the Civ 5 thread.  >.>

but... it does require steam, which means my personal steam boycott forbits me from dling it.

oh well, thats ok, there is more to life than a single FPS... that isnt really a FPS.

1. You're a moron.  Your failed attempt at using humour and sarcasm to point out the flaws in a presented argument only serve to highlight the fact that you don't understand the argument to begin with as you've failed to address any one point of the argument against a Steam monopoly in your pointless post.
2. It's a Valve game on a Valve Service.  Does your PS3 let you play Xbox 360 games?
3. I already have a Steam Account and Steam installed on my PC, and I own several of Valve's titles.  The object of a 'free' Steam exlcusive is to get people who don't have Steam to install it, much in the same way as bundling Steam with Civilisation V is to get into the PCs of people who don't already have Steam.

Good day.

Sweet deal :) This was done to attract Mac users to the store, to get them hooked there, nice move.

In the meantime, i'm getting Portal, ehhe, never actually tried the game, but now, i'm going to give it a go.

lol Zehdon you are so hilarious. Every post you make fills me with joy and laughter.

It's not a boycott if you aren't giving them any money.

Exactly my thoughts. Except the bolded part which is pure retardness. But hey, to each his own.

Its free, if you aren't willing to dl only because of steam your getting a bit too full of yourself.  Not much you can complain about when something is given to you.

pretty sure rawrrrr is just busting chops over some peoples unwillingness to install steam, what with it being the devil and all.

Interesting coincidence is release of a standalone and free game Prometheus on Impulse (also first-person puzzle game) that took place only a few days ago.

Oh, right. Doesn't actually seem that interesting.

It's actually more likely that Portal is free due Portal 2 coming later... this year? I don't know, i don't actually follow anything Valve-related.

And after an hour or two playing Portal, i got bored to it. It's actually rather repetive. Partially this is because i've played it once already. Ain't getting Portal 2 for sure (Portal/Orange Box was on borrowed actually). I mean, how is it going to be different? 3rd portal? The basic idea is going to be same in any case (of course this can be said from any game)

RAWRRRR, you are getting karma from me. You are fricking hilarious, man.

Valve is going to be receiving obscene profits with this free game. I knew they were up to no good. Maybe we should get a government agency to regulate them and charge higher prices.

Don't you mean that you love Valve? Steam is just how you get Portal for free ... unless you mean that the getting it for free is more important than the ones that made it.

And yes, Steam is just a part of Valve, which makes either of those choices the result of Valve's decisions. That being said, I like Valve w/o steam more than Valve w/ steam ;)

Wait, serious question: how would you play this on a mac?  I'm pretty sure the game (and most games really) requires more than one mouse button.
